To believe we've forgotten how to eat healthily

I'm so completely fed up of the school serving up so much rubbish, with seemingly no understanding that its unhealthy. It is really really hard to find good evidenced advice about healthy eating for children. There seem to be contradictory reports coming out all the time, and I say that as someone who is really interested in this subject so it must be harder if you don't.

The school meals are utter rubbish. They have a sugary rubbishy pudding every day, sweets at every possible occasion and now they have seen fit to start selling ice creams after school to raise money.
Im not even THAT strict I don't think, I'm happy for her to have these foods but evidence shows that eating them regularly alters your taste buds and makes you crave them more. I think they should be occasional foods we eat as PART of a healthy diet, not every day.

But at the moment I'm feeling like a lone voice and I hate dd feeling like she's missing out in not having what her friends are. I don't want these things to be "forbidden" objects of desire.

It just seems as though there is very little knowledge now of what is actually healthy for children.

I'd say we were at C when both of us were unwell/injured , but now pretty much at B apart from when I'm having a flare up. Although snacks are a downfall still.

I would love to be A but I need a bigger kitchen :o

fuzzpig · 17/06/2014 20:58

Corus do you just use a normal food processor to make peanut butter? And do you add anything?

I think so. We are generally trying to eat 'cleaner' - I am not banning anything or counting calories etc, but just gradually moving further away from processed food.

So, where during tough times I'd crack open a pot of tomato pasta sauce (despite being able to make a lovely one myself), I no longer buy it as I'll do my own. DCs are used to muller corner type yoghurts but I'm going to try getting natural yoghurt and just fresh fruit. That kind of thing.

Now if I could just banish the cereal addiction we'd be right on track.

fuzzpig · 17/06/2014 21:06

Their* cereal addiction I mean. I've pretty much broken mine, I have eggs now.

AgentDiNozzo.
I want to congratulate you on that post. That is some post!

I would agree fwiw. And we most definitely fluctuate between B and C.
For now, I personally am totally healthy on it[early 50's]

We shall see what I am like in 2 or 3 decades.

I know a person who was a definite A.
All well and good until he hit about 84.
And why did he die within a year?
Because he didnt go to the doctor.
And why didnt he go to the doctor, which may have saved his life?
Because he knew there was something wrong and didnt want to get a diagnosis as he didnt want to worry up his relatives.

Moral of this true story.
You can be as healthy as you like.
But go to the doctors if you think that you need to. Else a lot of the above can end up being in vain.

Add chilli and lime and make a sort of bastard satay marinade?

Freeze it individual pots and bring it as special dipping sauce for hummus and stuff??

Perhaps post on S&B and see if they have any cunning ideas. Some sort of nutty body scrub perhaps? Or a hair mask?

No Corus but I'm thinking about making ghee from normal organic butter because it's better for the digestion apparently.

Ooh thanks for that I was going to google it tbh Grin ; why do they put so much shit stuff we wouldn't put in our selves in ready made food I wonder?

DH is no way as fussy as me, today he bought ready made ginger slices for sushi and the ingredients are vile;

Thai ginger 60% ,water, salt vinegar, acetic acid and citric acid, aspartame, solution of saccharine and sucrose, sodium potassium.

Why would they put in a preservative with all those vinegars and sugars? How long do they reckon it's going to be on the shelf, 10 years ? Grin
