I get this impression and have no idea why - is this my imagination or is this the case?

Where are you originally from?

I am thoroughly English.

Yes we also stay in Lamlash. .on a dairy farm but travel round whole island. Seems really child and SN friendly there, we always feel DD is really accepted. We love the Auchrannie resort and dD thought the open topped bus was best thing ever.

We went on the Waverley last time, she loved it.

Great beaches too.

I used to get my jeans from a shop called Jax Jeans by Nicolson Square - the ladies who worked in there were fab and had you lie down on the floor while they tugged at the zip for you. Yup, skintight was the only way to go in the early 80s!
Fond memories of the Great Western Trading Co in Coburn Street and the Greyfriars Market on Forest Row.

Theres a really nice cafe with a kids playground but I cant remember its name.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2014 12:51

Café Thyme is its name. They do great Turkish pizzas and takeaway burgers and fish and chips.

ToysRLuv · 14/06/2014 12:52

Right, you experts, if you don't mind, I have a question: We have never been to a Scottish Island (DH is from doon sooth, and I'm forrin) DS us nearly 5. Which is the nicest and easiest/cheapest to get to for a short holiday (maybe at a farm, ir staying in a static caravan, cheapish b&b)? Ds fancies Shetland (I think he saw a program about it on cbeebies), but I think that would be pricey (from Edinburgh).

Yama · 14/06/2014 12:58

We also stay in Lamlash. Going on the wee boat over to Holy Isle is great. And an afternoon refreshment in the beer garden of the Drift Inn is a must.

The whole island is geared up for kids. So much to do outside and inside if the weather is crap.

ToysRLuv · 14/06/2014 13:04

Lamlash sounds good.

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 14/06/2014 13:09

I'm not Scottish.

ToysRLuv · 14/06/2014 13:12

I would love to see a pie chart of the demographics of MN

Mrsjayy · 14/06/2014 13:18

Shetland is expensive to get to I think , probably your best bet would be arran they have caravan parks, or skye,

KatieKaye · 14/06/2014 13:20

Millport, on Cumbrae (across from Largs) is gorgeous and brilliant for families. Very few cars on the island - you can hire bikes including tandems!

AngusAndElspethsThistleWhistle · 14/06/2014 13:25

EddieStobart my Mum still gets her curtain material from Rejects. She's been going there for years! Grin

Xcountry · 14/06/2014 13:32

scottish

ToysRLuv · 14/06/2014 13:34

Ah, thanks will look into the west, then, I think.. I've been to Largs before and stayed in

ToysRLuv · 14/06/2014 13:43

Bloody kindle, sorry! Yes, have been to Largs and stayed in a country house/manor converted into a hotel. It was very nice and posh, but one of the staff opened our door with a key while we were in bed, and dashed away once she realised her error.

We were terrified and didn't know who it was, as it was dark and she didn't come fyrther than the doorstep. Dh ran out to try and catch her in his pants and without his glasses. But drew the line at following her shadow downstairs where a bonfire night party was still going on. Grin

Later, he got dressed and went downstairs to find out what had happened. The girl, a new employee, confessed over a drink. She though the room was unoccupied, and she was just going to nick the heater for another couple.

littlewhitebag · 14/06/2014 14:37

I love Rejects. It's one of my favourite shops.

Dundee is going to look great once all the work is finished but at the moment there is a different road layout every time you go! Very confusing.

mum2bubble · 14/06/2014 14:47

Scottish (Edinburgh born & Glasgow educated)

SconeRhymesWithGone · 14/06/2014 14:56

I lived in the Grange when I was a student in Edinburgh. My hall of residence was a lovely huge house with an extension built on the back. It is now a private house again and the extension was torn down after the university sold it. As an American not used to walking much, I found it a bit of a hike to get to Old College where my classes were. Now when I go back I like to retrace that lovely walk through the Meadows.

tilliebob · 14/06/2014 15:08

Am Scottish and too busy to read the whole thread at the mo - if anyone can give me a brief summary that would be rickety boo Grin

OOAOML · 14/06/2014 17:12

Last night was quite a lot on drink, food and different words used in different areas. Today I think is mainly about where is nice to live, but I admit I've only skim read today so may have missed something.

specialmagiclady · 14/06/2014 18:52

Also say "the back of" in spite of living Down South for 20 odd years. (In all other ways I sound English and call myself a Stealth Jock but that would be my "tell" if I was a secret agent.

WildThong · 14/06/2014 19:01

awayanboilyourheid, for sure they don't make them like that anymore! Wasn't it the Weisfields or something like that? Is that the same people who also owned WhatEveryWomanWants?
Also showing my age!

readyforno2 · 14/06/2014 19:03

Aye, Scottish here too!

KatoPotato · 14/06/2014 19:03

'The back of' and 'going uptae'

Mrsjayy · 14/06/2014 19:31

I really like how we can talk how we usually do on this thread
