We have been allocated a reception place at a school 1 3/4 miles away. That's 17.5 miles a week, in rain or shine. Or snow and ice, on top of a long school day for DS's little legs. And double that for my 46y old achey hips and dodgy knees.

I'm trying to be positive, looking at running shoes and making the most of it, but this school run's going to be f***g miserable, isn't it?

Would I be very unreasonable to shout 'shut up' out of the window, at the smarmy swines running around the playground of the school 5 metres away, who are gloating and laughing at me, because they got in and we didn't?

Why did you not get into the 5m away school? Are there any others in between the two?

Is there no buses at all? Could you cadge a lift?

As a kid i had to walk over a mile to get to school, fine when the weathers nice but bloody awful in winter, especially as it meant sitting in class in wet clothes for 6 hours

Sorry your ds didnt get the place op, especially as the school is so close to you. We walked two miles every day to school. Lovely in the summer and even winter when cold. Not so nice in rain though.

My school run isn't the easiest either and there's a good school ten min walk from
My house. Unfortunately there is also a shit school ten mis from my house and that's the one we got.

I now spend my day on buses.

You need to find out why you didn't get in. And where you are on the list

If there is no chance of getting to closer school then gear up with snow boots and water proof over trousers and poncho. keep 'school' shoes in schoolbag. so DC can remove wet outer layer and boots when they get into school. Also research buses/taxis/other parents travelling that way. It might seem awful now but it is doable.

So is your DS only going to be there for two weeks then?

We are in the same position - three schools in our catchment area and all oversubscribed. We will have to drive half an hour to get to ds's school in September. On all waiting lists but it is unlikely to change.

Yet there is still a development for 132 flats happening. Where are they meant to go to school/doctors?

FWIW I walk 1.75miles to our catchment school. It's not that far even up our huge hills

Scoot or bike. I use my DS;s scooter and just adjust the height for me to do the CM run. Its fun!

If it's 1 3/4 miles there, then it's 3.5 mile round trip. Multiply by 2 and that's 7 miles a day. 5x7 is 35

probably because she will be doing the walk 4 times a day So 3.5 miles every morning and 3.5 miles every afternoon.

I think the title is meant to say 3.5 miles? X 5 = 17.5

The 17.5 miles is what the Ds will have to do

1.75 miles there and 1.75 back home, twice a day is 7 miles, 5 times a week is 35 miles.
