We have been allocated a reception place at a school 1 3/4 miles away. That's 17.5 miles a week, in rain or shine. Or snow and ice, on top of a long school day for DS's little legs. And double that for my 46y old achey hips and dodgy knees.

I'm trying to be positive, looking at running shoes and making the most of it, but this school run's going to be f***g miserable, isn't it?

Would I be very unreasonable to shout 'shut up' out of the window, at the smarmy swines running around the playground of the school 5 metres away, who are gloating and laughing at me, because they got in and we didn't?

I don't see the problem! Think of the exercise you'll get. Have you got a dog? Smile We have a similar length journey with very steep hills and it's fine. Just make sure you all have good waterproofs and wellies and you'll be fine. You'll probably find your aches and pains improve with regular exercise.

SirChenjin · 12/06/2014 13:24

Ah of course - was forgetting the OP has to walk back home after dropping her DC off!

kelda · 12/06/2014 13:24

I assume the OP has to walk there and back, twice a day. So that 's 17.5 miles for her child, and 35 miles for her.

I would be annoyed if my child didn't get a place in the school next door.

Canthisonebeused · 12/06/2014 13:25

It isn't that far, really is it?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 12/06/2014 13:25

Arf at the SUMS derailing the thread.

Ugh, OP, hope you get in on the waiting list.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/06/2014 13:27

Why didn't DS get into the nearby school? Is he on waiting lists for all nearer schools? I wouldn't fancy walking 35 miles a week to a place I didn't really want to go either. Could you cycle and pop a tag-a-long type thing on the back for DS?

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 12/06/2014 13:28

The problem, Marrow, is that the OP has a perfectly acceptable school 5 metres away, but her DS can't go there.

Icimoi · 12/06/2014 13:28

Have you appealed for the school nearby, and are you on its waiting list?

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/06/2014 13:30

It's not that far if your fit and healthy.

op has dodgy hips. Plus even short distances can ale a whole if you use public transport.

I only travel 4 miles to dds school however that results in between 4.5-5 hours a day getting there and back.

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/06/2014 13:30

Take a while

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 12/06/2014 13:30

How hilly is it? Can you buy a bike with a trailer? DS school is that far and if I had to walk it I'd definitely go for the bike option. We used to cycle together to nursery ( same place) last summer which was lovely but impractical for the return journey as he was too tired at that point.

murphys · 12/06/2014 13:31

Wahaha. OP you should get a job at the school - teaching maths, then we'll send this lot to you..

Sorry about the place though.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/06/2014 13:32

This is the sort of thing I mean that attaches on a bike. I got one on eBay for about £15 or something.

Canthisonebeused · 12/06/2014 13:33

OP said she has 46 year old achy hips and dodgy knees. I took that tongue in cheek and nothing more than normal wear and tear. If OP has a disability or specific condition then I think it would be reasonable to appeal. OP doesn't indicate that is the case. I have dodgy ankles and knees and dd has little legs we walk almost twice that distance taking just around 35 mins to 40 mins. It really isn't that far, for achy hips and dodgy knees.

edamsavestheday · 12/06/2014 13:35

love the fact so many posts are about the maths, not the issue. Grin

Feel for you WomanScorned, that is extremely frustrating. is ds on the waiting list for the nearer school?

WomanScorned · 12/06/2014 14:11

Just back from nursery run, and catching up with the thread. Sorry for the confusion. It's 35 a week for me - I was going for maximum impact/sympathy!

The LA had a previous address on their system, so they disregarded the address I applied from, ie, where we live, and used the old one.

I am waiting for an appeal date, but am not massively hopeful, as I have to prove an admin error. I was banking on the waiting list, but have just learned that 6 families with a sibling link madwnd 2 LA children.

WomanScorned · 12/06/2014 14:13

Gah, sent too soon! But it's probably less confusing than my original post, regardless!

We were faced with a similar possible situation but fortunately got the nearer school. I've walked to the further school as they have a toddler group - ours is a little further at around 1.9 miles but it would take us 30-40 minutes each way, depending on whether dc was walking or in buggy.

That's potentially nearly 2 hours a day for you of walking. No doubt you also have other things to do like shopping etc - I think it will be pretty tiring, especially when he gets a bit older and has a book bag, musical instrument and martial arts kit or the like. And pretty horrible if there's heavy rain.

We're used to walking - we don't have use of a car in the week so walk pretty much everywhere.

YANBU in my view. I wouldn't be happy at all. Could you maybe team up with someone else to do one journey each a day?

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/06/2014 14:15

Presumably you issued them with a utility bill proving your adress?

You should have a case for a good result on apeL due to their error

chrome100 · 12/06/2014 14:16

YABU. 1 3/4 miles is not far and your son will get used to it.

jacks365 · 12/06/2014 14:19

Question is if the admin error wasn't made would you have got a place? Does the school have sibling priority and have siblings on the waiting list. What is your place on the waiting list?

Elsiequadrille · 12/06/2014 14:19

I don't think 1.34 miles is far either. But understand the walk being less appealing if it's somewhere you don't actually want to go to.

MrsWinnibago · 12/06/2014 14:23

Get a bike with a tagalong. That's what I've been doing. 8 miles a day here for me. I have a wonky ankle and I'm 41.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 12/06/2014 14:24

I would say them ignoring the address you applied from is very much an error on their part and you should definitely push it.

SirChenjin · 12/06/2014 14:27

1.75 miles on its own is not far. 1.75 miles x 4, when it's horizontal rain, freezing cold or icy, with tired children, heavy kit and school bag is far - and it's not fun. Not in the slightest. There's a reason we moved on from shank's pony and horse and cart, you know.
