To be bored of the World Cup already?!

I can muster no enthusiasm, no one I know is even talking about it, is it just a big non-event? I am sure in past years there has been lots of hype and publicity about games and world cup parties. Nothing this year (which is great by me!) it seems or am I living in a bubble and the rest of the nation is going nuts?

Actually you are within your rights to start any type of thread you like aren't you?

If you want to start a thread on dressage then do crack on. All I know is that while the dressage is on, there won't be advert after advert telling me to buy Hay Flavoured Pringles, or special edition Dorito Nosebags.

And no one else was attacking the folks that came on and said "yup, I'm watching it" so why are you getting so angry. You are perfectly welcome to hide the thread, just as I'll be hiding the world cup ones.

scaevola · 12/06/2014 15:20

I don't see why the World Cup topic has to contain only one viewpoint (same for other topics).

I really just wanted to remind people it's there, because it would be a good place for footie threads right now. (On the same general principle that Christmas threads go in their topic, so those who want to bring it out only near/in December when they're ready to see them and not feel it's inflicted on them all the time. Yes, you can hide individual threads, but hiding a whole topic means it's removed in a oner).

ExcuseTypos · 12/06/2014 15:25

I agree with you OP. I loved the Olympics- spent every day watching TV and loved every minute of it.

Can't get enthused about a load of overpaid men kicking a ball around then a studio of overpaid men, talking about it. Boring as hell. Thankfully DH isn't interested either.

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 15:28

blue the clue is the question mark is 'am I being unreasonable? ' the question was asked and I think you and the op are being petty. I have no desire to hide it as I'm mot offrnded by it, just find the carping and moaning slightly tedious and misguided.

Wally watching football isnt mandatory, neither is buying any of the products advertised in between it. I love football and if anything American corporate giants like Budweiser and Gilette desperstely trying to shoehorn football into their adverts makes me less likely to buy their products. Mind you even for a confirmed football hater, the sight of an advert with a football in it shouldn't bring you out in the fit of the vapours.

PerfectlyPosed · 12/06/2014 15:28

The reasons I'm looking forward to the World Cup are:

  1. Being allowed to leave work early to go to the pub and watch the England games
  2. My DP is cooking a Brazilian themed meal tonight
  3. Gives me an opportunity to finish my book Grin

In other news, I have just pulled out Ivory Coast and Cameroon in the office sweepstake so I don't even have a pot of winnings to look forward to!

ToniWol · 12/06/2014 15:30

What... There's some football on.

First day of Test Matches thank you. Although we're already 4 down Hmm

fluffyraggies · 12/06/2014 15:31

I cannot believe how many ordinary folk are sick and tired (rightly) of the corruption and general fat-cat'edness of some of our politicians and big business leaders - and yet are happy to shell out for a season ticket to see blokes who are being paid thousands a week to do nothing but kick a ball about.

As for the world coming together - i believe Brazil has had to ban it's own citizens from demonstrating near the stadium about the money being spent by their government on a ball game, when so many are in grinding poverty, for fear of spoiling the atmos! Hmm How very enriching.

Having said all that - i will watch the England games. Then get the hump when they loose again.

MilkandCereal · 12/06/2014 15:31

O/T but I feel that way about Frozen, and I havent watched it,or heard 'Let It Go' but I am very tired of hearing/reading about it.

I'm not a big fan of the World Cup either really, but it is a huge event,so I think mass coverage he to be expected.

I quite fancy hay flavoured Pringles.

TwiceRemoved · 12/06/2014 15:37

I've had my free copy of the Sun this morning and am considering wiping my arse on it.

HesterShaw, that's a horrible thing to suggest.....

What has your @rse done to deserve something that bad?????

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 15:41

The players are paid modest (by their standards) appearance fees for appearing for their national team and are a fraction of what they get for their clubs. The England team give their match fees to charity which of course they can comfortably afford but it is disingenuous to suggest players are hugely paid for representing their countries.

ExcuseTypos · 12/06/2014 15:42

There's a whole thread here about the free Sun newspaper. There is an address to send it back to them if you want to. wrap it in a brick- imagine the postage billSmile

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 15:46

fluffy do you go to the cinema or buy DVDs? You could equally say 'I can't believe people will pay x amount yo go and watch Tom Cruise/Cameron Diaz/Angelina Jolie/Will Smith pretend to be someone else in a silly costume and be paid x number of million for yhe privilege. '

WallyBantersJunkBox · 12/06/2014 15:48

But what the heck does a football have to do with Listerine? I mean for goodness sake.

I'd expect certain companies to advertise, hell yes, I work for one of the biggest sports companies in the world (incidentally sales dip during these events for sports companies), but it's the usual bandwagon jumping, trying to incite people into a buying frenzy of irrelevant stuff that just irritates me.

I haven't once slagged off the game of football in my posts, have I? I've already said I'll be watching. And I have to actually, so that I can decide when to start marking down certain kits for clearance.

But as usual, rather than being an event it's an exercise in mass consumerism loosely linked to a sport. And I remember as a kid, watching the game, then going out and playing it in the street, all the kids reenacting different player and countries.....not arranging a pork pie stack on the coffee table to make sure my bucket of strongbow has room infront of my new HD tv.

And yes I believe the Brazilians are in uproar about the way their tax money has been spent on this event. But this is always glossed over in the press by the might of FIFA.

deepbluetr · 12/06/2014 15:49

Why the need to defend compost? Can't you just accept that many people find football trival and boring and find a thread that will share your enthusiasm.

I doubt you will find any of us open to conversion here.

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 15:52

Well both you and I see it for what it is... a cynical marketing in exercise. I switch over, go for a pee, make a coffee. Doesn't diminish my love of the football.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/06/2014 15:55

Why is compost on here putting his/her opion on the matter?

Because this is an AIBU.

The OP asked that question...AIBU? Compost thinks, as I do, that the OP is BU, so we have said so. It's how AIBU works as I understand it.

It might be a minority view on this thread but as far as I was aware, we are allowed to post opinions on AIBU

deepbluetr · 12/06/2014 15:59

Of course she can post opinions, but telling others to "bore off" surely deserves a challenge?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/06/2014 16:13

I think "bore off" is pretty mild by AIBU standards!

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 16:20

blue you don't get football or the world cup I get that. But I maintain that starting a thread saying how much you hate the world cup is the actions of a bore as it easily avoided and there are plenty of other things that you can do.

Also if you and the the op wanted a place where you can moan and mump about how awful football is without anyone questioning this, set up a private Facebook group, not a discussion board.

caruthers · 12/06/2014 16:24

Fortunately football lovers don't really listen to the football haters so it's all good.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/06/2014 17:10

I have just been excitedly studying my World Cup chart.

And my iPhone must think the World Cup is important as it automatically gave it initial caps

PotsofGold · 12/06/2014 17:22

There is a pub fairly local to me that doesn't 'do' football at all. No screens, no flags, no mention of football at all.

The landlady once told me that the duration of World Cups are one of their busiest times!

kentishgirl · 12/06/2014 17:47

I'm not the slightest bit interested. Never have been.

OH is, he's all excited and got a pair of England flag socks on especially today Grin. He's got a wall chart and everything. Bless.

MadMaddox · 12/06/2014 17:55

I love the World Cup. Am a bit lukewarm about the Premiership etc but do love this Tournament. Poor DS (who does not like football, even on a world stage setting) has to put up with "the game" being on. Smile

iklboo · 12/06/2014 17:59

None of us are interested either. Poor DS has a 5 week school project based on it - quite a bit is on researching a given country, its food & culture which is great. But week 5 is a presentation about what he loves about the World Cup. That's gonna be a SHORT presentation!
