To be bored of the World Cup already?!

I can muster no enthusiasm, no one I know is even talking about it, is it just a big non-event? I am sure in past years there has been lots of hype and publicity about games and world cup parties. Nothing this year (which is great by me!) it seems or am I living in a bubble and the rest of the nation is going nuts?

Its a load of shite. But if people love it and get excited then good on them.

The advert on ITV at the minute of people practically gurning their 'goal face' in slo-mo is annoying me more than anything else

trikken · 12/06/2014 13:19

It's not for me at all. Zero interest. Luckily dh hates every sport type thing except darts and snooker. The small one would also prefer to watch Dr Who on dvd instead which I'd much prefer.

JCDenton · 12/06/2014 13:23

I love football but I hate how marketers are crowbarring football into everything.

There was an advert I hated at the last tournament for a car where they chaged the advert to have the car drive into a football stadium at the end. Why? Am I going to think 'hurr well I like football and that car there is on the football pitch so I should buy that car!'.

Also I hate that guy in the Mars advert.

Still, I look forward to the tournament and a load of people with sour faces eager to tell me how much they don't like a thing. Do another thing, then.

offtoseethewizard64 · 12/06/2014 13:28

4 of us in this household and none of us are the slightest bit interested in football - even the World Cup. I'll be glad when it is all over and there is something else on the TV.

sixlive · 12/06/2014 13:39

Tennis will keep me going.

Sallyingforth · 12/06/2014 13:51

Was talking about this with my neighbour.
She said don't worry - Wimbledon will be on soon.
I just gritted my teeth - can't stand tennis either.

deepbluetr · 12/06/2014 14:09

The World cup- is that football?

I didn't even know it was happening. OH and teenage son have no interest in football and we don't watch much TV, so I can't say i will notice much of what is going on.

Andrewofgg · 12/06/2014 14:09

When golf is made illegal tennis will be the most boring thing on television. Or vice versa .

Sallyingforth · 12/06/2014 14:10

Andrew you forgot darts.

CarbeDiem · 12/06/2014 14:13

Going against the grain - I love it :)
I can't wait for it to start.
Will watch it to the end even if England get kicked out.

Stinkle · 12/06/2014 14:14

Snooker is actually the most boring thing on television.

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 14:22

Ffs... the world comes together to watch and play the one truly global game in Brazil and you are bored of it before it starts?

If the idea of that bores you than I suggest you are bored of life.

deepbluetr · 12/06/2014 14:31

"Ffs... the world comes together"- really?

Only those interested in football.

ENormaSnob · 12/06/2014 14:38

I am not into football at all but i like the world cup.

In particular the socialising that goes with it Grin

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 14:40

Which is a vast number of people. A billion people watched the last final alone.

If ypu don't like it bore off and watch the 40 odd other channels thst aren't showing it and stop trying to suck the koy out of it for the rest of us!

scaevola · 12/06/2014 14:41

I'm not interested in the football.

I quite like following who's beating who (bit like enjoying the Eurovision voting but not wanting to listen to any of the songs).

But i think YABU to post about it in a general topic when it has a MN topic of its very own. (Which the loathers could hide)

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 14:41

Joy not koy. Sucking Koi will get you arrested and/or a career in niche beastiality porn.

deepbluetr · 12/06/2014 14:46

And one billion people is only 15% of the global population. Hardly the "world coming together"

Many of us do find football boring compost - the OP was asking if many of us feel the same. Should we all feel as you do?

Why don't you find your football scarf and doritos and "bore off" to watch the TV for hours.

scaevola · 12/06/2014 14:46

The World Cup topic is here btw, in case any readers of this thread are moved to start others about it.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 12/06/2014 14:53

But you wouldn't start a "bored of the world cup.." thread in the world cup section would you? I wouldn't even click in there tbh.

Op is entitled to express her view, have people stormed onto any of the football threads insulting posters over there then?

And if you read the posts you'll see that most people aren't hating football, rather the hype, excessive salaries, excessive marketing etc.

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 15:03

deep

Because a) I don't like doritos b) a scarf is superfluous even in the Scottish summer c) because I am an actual person not a cliche from an advert d) i want England to do well along with Ghana and Belgium but I am not fanatically following any one team as I just love the spectacle.

Watching it isn't compulsory there are plenty of other things to watch and do. I just seems petty, joyless and mean spirited to start a thread like this. I have no interest in dressage but wouldn't start a thread along the lines of 'fucking horse of the year show I hate horses, horses are shit. Dancing horses are the wankiest, why is this on tv?' I'll get up and do something else.

ComposHat · 12/06/2014 15:06

Oh and at least one billion from a global population of 7 billion to watch a single match is a good chunk of the world coming together whichever way you slice it.

Easily the biggest global audience for an event.

deepbluetr · 12/06/2014 15:11

compost I don't see why you feel the need to comment on this thread.
No-one is attacking you personally, inciting racial or religious hatred.
It's only a game ffs.
What does it matter to you if people want to have a moan about something like this- MN is full of people complaining about the weather, bosses, school lunches, their husband.

Just move along to a thread you like, rather than commenting on this one and telling people to "bore off".

No-one is compromising your ability to enjoy football after all.

IWillYeah · 12/06/2014 15:12

Love the WC.

I'll be watching the Brazil game tonight and am making caipirinhas to have with Grin

I'm supporting England (want to say I am feeling positive, but cant, really) and always have a soft spot for the African teams.

I'd LOVE to be there right now. Went to the WC in South Africa and had the most amazing experience, meeting different people from all over the world.

IWillYeah · 12/06/2014 15:14

ComposHat has a point, though. I wait for the 'urgh i hate football' threads with every major tournament. They always come and are always the same.
