To complain to M&S about their so called 'Humour' cards

Mograt · 11/06/2014 10:26

I have a fairly robust disposition when it comes to humour (mother of two DCS, one 14 year old DS and a 12 year old DD.

However I had a sense of humour fail in my local M&S store last week when browsing the birthday cards.

Much of the humour was pathetic, stereo-typed and desperately unfunny but one card in particular I found completely unacceptable and sexist.

Hopefully I've managed to attach the shot I took of the card but if not it shows a man in old fashioned garb addressing his dog in 'gangsta rap' with the order:

"Fetch my slippers, bitch"

I've actually been motivated to write to M&S customer services and I'm awaiting their response.

So Ladies, I'm interested in all opinions so fire away! More than ready to hear that you all think I'm an old fart who needs to get with it!

Oh dear, I laughed! Blush Maybe I've been watching too much Breaking Bad?

PrincessBabyCat · 11/06/2014 17:08

Did you hear the airplane joke? It'd just go over your head.

ReggieJones · 11/06/2014 17:13

Now that's good clean fun that is Princess. Its much more the sort of thing I would expect from M&S, you should write in and suggest it. They might even give you a mention or let you be in one of their advertisements with that Myleene Class

Meeeep · 11/06/2014 17:19

I bought a card this week that had "Happy Birthday end" and once bought wrapping paper that had cunt written on it repeatedly (the person likes the word). I can't get offended about this sorry OP!

elfycat · 11/06/2014 17:25

But are we sure the dog in question is female?

Meh84 · 11/06/2014 17:27

I thought it was funny!

CumberCookie · 11/06/2014 17:29

To everyone saying "If it's a female dog its a bitch" well yeah duh that's the joke. It's still offensive because its making reference to the derogatory term for women because its referencing "gangstar rap".

Having said that it wouldn't bother me that much to complain.

trevortrevorslattery · 11/06/2014 17:34

I wouldn't say I was offended, but then that's not what the OP said either.

I didn't get the impression she was shocked into a fainting fit by the card, just that she had a "sense of humour fail". TBF I think M+S have had the sense of humour fail and are twats for selling this. I agree with OP and YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime.

If you don't complain then they get the message that this is OK. I'd be interested to hear their response when you get it.

Enjoyingmycoffee1981 · 11/06/2014 17:47

I have a fairly robust disposition when it comes to humour

On the basis of this thread, I doubt that.

odyssey2001 · 11/06/2014 17:49

It is a clever play on words and satirises sexism of that ilk. Therefore if must have gone over your head if you were offended.

Notso · 11/06/2014 18:00

It's a crap card, that type of card has been done to death and back.

I will admit that when I first saw the picture I thought Richard was the dog not the man.

tankytoppy · 11/06/2014 20:28

Please come back and tell us what their reply was.

Thetillo · 07/04/2015 08:48

Hi, late to the party on this but I designed this card so just wanted to thank you all for your kind words.

Satsumafairy · 07/04/2015 09:03

If you did Thetillo, good for you clearly some people like it. I don't like it. It wouldn't be funny if it wasn't for the fact that people do call women bitches and that is what this plays on. I'm not disgusted by it but I don't like it and wouldn't buy it.

SpearmintLino · 07/04/2015 09:05

I'd be offended by it too. As previously stated, it's only 'funny' for using a derogatory term against women. For women to support this, I find concerning.

SomewhereIBelong · 07/04/2015 09:13

I don't like it, but would not complain, just not go looking for cards in M+S.

As for it being a clever play on words that must have gone over your head if you were offended - are there really people who delight in sneering at others this way. Did not go over my head at all, I'm sure I read it in EXACTLY the way it was intended.

Satsumafairy · 07/04/2015 09:15

Exactly Somewhere. The supposed wordplay is obvious, not clever at all.

VirginiaTonic · 07/04/2015 09:18

Ha ha ha! Grin Please don't write to them, you'll only make yourself look very silly because you didn't 'get' the joke.

SnakeyMcBadass · 07/04/2015 09:23

Richard is an awesome name for a dog imo.

Satsumafairy · 07/04/2015 09:23

Why do you think she doesn't get the joke? It's not complex!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 07/04/2015 09:25

OP dont ever pop into a Scribbler. You would be mortified.

Love Scribbler.

NoPsipsinaChocolateOrange · 07/04/2015 09:26

Well I find it fairly offensive too so you're not alone, OP.

I think the hoes one is really funny though.

It's the context. And it all depends on the bloke as well, I don't like the guy on the bitch card. He looks like he could potentially mean it.

NoPsipsinaChocolateOrange · 07/04/2015 09:29

Thetillo, really?

This reminds me of the moment one of the MN old guard popped up on a thread calling Waybuloo 'the most stomach churning pile of toss she had ever seen', to claim a part in researching the programme.

VirginiaTonic · 07/04/2015 09:30

The word bitch is only offensive if used in an offensive manner. The fact the card pokes fun at the use of the word by 'gansta rappers' who use it in a sexist way actually makes it 'anti-sexist' in my eyes.

LondonRocks · 07/04/2015 09:31

I bought it for a friend who liked it. Each to their own!
