Disagreement over birthday present for ds1

BobTheFly · 08/06/2014 11:45

In principle we both agree that ds1 can have an iPad for his 11th birthday.

However one parent thinks he should have their old iPad 2 and they (the parent) should have the newer one. It does have a hairline crack across one corner but this doesn't affect use whatsoever. This parent's birthday is two days before ds1 so that would be their gift.

Other parent thinks it's his birthday so he should get the new one as parent 1 already has one.

We can't afford to get two.

Who's right (in your opinion)? Parent 1 or 2? Wwyd?

I thought birthday presents were meant to be surprises!

Icimoi · 08/06/2014 14:46

Just a thought - if he already has free access to his Dad's iPad, is there much point in giving him another? It won't exactly have novelty value, will it?

aprilanne · 08/06/2014 14:48

sorry but what a misery .to give a child an old one with a crack so he could get a new one .i would tell him to f... off to be honest .

Aeroflotgirl · 08/06/2014 14:58

Give him dh old I pad and get ds something else he would like: bike, I pod,

chocolatemademefat · 08/06/2014 15:07

For my birthday daddy bought himself a new I-Pad and I got this knocked about one.
That's going to sound great when he tells everyone what he got.
Must be a man thing.

HesGotStyleAGrooveyStyle · 08/06/2014 15:13

For my birthday I got dads old Ipad plus some other things I really wanted . My Ipad2 does exactly the same as a brand new one, apart from a scratch and the fact it's not a retina display - (which, as an 11 year old I don't give a monkeys about)

RosiePosiePing · 08/06/2014 15:22

Sell the old one and put the money towards 2 new ones?

Ds get's the new I pad. It doesn't seem much of a gift to give him the old one that presumably he has use of anyway.

Mrsjayy · 08/06/2014 15:43

A hand me down broken present sucks just give him the ipad iand by your son a new not broken present

PrimalLass · 08/06/2014 16:14

Sell the cracked iPad2 and buy 2 new minis.

Kewcumber · 08/06/2014 18:27

DS's Ipad mini is fab and cost from memroy about £150 and he got an indestructable Griffin (?) defender case from someone else. Its a brilliant size very transportable and depending on what he uses it for more than enough - I've even downsized my tablet as a result from it broke.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 08/06/2014 19:12

Another fan of iPad mini here

bubalou · 08/06/2014 19:26

Agree too with barbarian.

I think either solution is fine - either a new iPad or a handed down one would be great.

However agree that I shouldn't count as a 'big' present. Maybe a new case, iTunes vouchers etc can make up the difference.

Thank you.,

I like the idea of the iPad mini (I have one already) and it's not for a few months so plenty of time to save for a lovely case. :)

Along with another present if there is anything else he wants fine, as an only present when his dad is getting a new one no.

If you were buying it second hand that would be fine, I think it's the thought of your dh having a new one and passing off his old one as a present that's the problem.

Saying that, I have an 11 yo, he'd be quite happy with a hand me down ipad and something else he really wanted. He would also be happy with a second hand gadget. He got a reconditioned xbox for Christmas as he wanted a larger memory, along with some other bits and bobs.

lljkk · 08/06/2014 20:37

An old cracked iPad sounds like a bit of a crap 'present'.

^This.
And the iPad 2 really is very dated now. An old IPad3 in decent nick would still be a bit weak all by itself.

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2014 08:09

My husband would want to do this it drives me loopy he loves to pass things on his latest is giving dd his old non responsive satnav to dd and he gets a new one Hmm was the face dd gave her dad
