to think that this is an appropriate portion size for a 5 year old?

This was DD's dinner. She is a very healthy weight. My cousin was here with her 4 year old girl, who I gave the same size portion - yet my cousin asked for extra everything for her DD as what I'd put out wasn't 'enough'.

They had ricecakes as an after school snack too.

to think that this is an appropriate portion size for a 5 year old?

What do you mean by saying your DD is a very healthy weight? Same percentile as she is for height or something else?

Mine would want a bit more carb, which I'd either do by adding bread/cracker/bit of potato or doing more filling veg like sweetcorn and cooked carrot.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 06/06/2014 21:46

Sidge - thank you for taking my pedantry with good humour Grin

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 06/06/2014 21:48

Lljkk - DS2 would eat the crisps and that would be all. I feel your pain.

Sirzy · 06/06/2014 21:53

Thats about the same size portion as DS (4) would have. He would probably eat more if he was given it but never complains about being hungry after a meal.

I do think a lot of people (adults and children) have portions which are too big and that is a big part of obesity problems so I am careful with portion sizes to try to discourage over eting

MollyBdenum · 06/06/2014 22:04

Mine vary hugely from day to day in what and how much they eat. And DS usually wants more protein while DD wants more carbs. They swapped fish for sweet potato at dinner tonight.

So it looks like a perfectly reasonable amount to serve, but wanting more wouldn't be unreasonable either, and nor would not finishing the meal.

It would be a fairly tiny portion of quiche for an adult. I estimate that it is takes up slightly less space on the plate than 5 cherry tomatoes which is about half the size of the palm of my hand.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 06/06/2014 22:07

The only thing I would say is that I would swap the nachos for a more filling carb.

RazzleDazzleEm · 06/06/2014 22:07

mine is thin as a whippet not an ounce of fat and I think she too would be hungry after that

stoopstofolly · 06/06/2014 22:10

Seems fine to me. About the amount my very solid 3.9 yr old would eat. TBH his slim 8yr old sister probably wouldn't eat much more.
If they are not hungry and over/underweight, then you are doing it correctly! Second the poster who said that portions sizes are getting bigger...

arethereanyleftatall · 06/06/2014 22:11

That's too much for my 5 yr old dd

mousmous · 06/06/2014 22:13

for mine it would be about right. but they go through picky phases where they don't eat much and hungry horse phases where they don't seem o be able to satisfied.
I usually dish up a smallish portion that is not overwhelming and offer seconds and/or yoghurt or fruit.

ouryve · 06/06/2014 22:13

Mine would have wanted more carbs (though not of the dry salty variety).

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 06/06/2014 22:14

That looks about what dd who is 8 would eat. Maybe with some coleslaw or a couple of new potatoes but not much more if anything else.

Chocovore · 06/06/2014 22:18

Perfect size for my 5yr old DS and typical of the kind of evening meal we would give him.

KitCat26 · 06/06/2014 22:33

Both mine would eat similar amounts on a good day, they are 3 & nearly 5. Some of DD1s friends would eat more.

In this house I dish out a similar amount, but there's always more on offer if they finish.

macdoodle · 06/06/2014 22:43

God my tiny 6yr old would be utterly ravenous after that. That would be an after school snack. She would have a good portion of cottage pie/spag bol etc with veg and probably ice cream for afters for dinner. She does have packed lunch because she hates school dinners, which would be more that size. So I guess it depends what they ate lunch time. But I think YABU. And my DD2 is very slim you can see her ribs!

mymoonandstars · 06/06/2014 22:54

My lower end of healthy weight 3 year old would demolish twice that. Although I would give the same size quiche amount, maybe a little less, and more tomatoes, cucumber and carrots because I know he would eat those.

Canthisonebeused · 06/06/2014 23:09

I don't under stand what the issue or point of the thread is. Are you asking aside (of if YABU to think it's an Appropriate portion size) if you are under feeding? If she is over feeding?

The fact you photographed it in anticipation to post here signals to me you are judging either her rudeness to ask, or how much she's feeding her dd, either way does it matter?

It's your cousin if you begrudge her a few extra tomatoes and quiche why have her over for dinner at all. Hmm and if you think she's over feeding her dd and she is morbidly obese then raise it if not, it's no big deal surely.

lljkk · 07/06/2014 09:20

I find replies kind of fascinating... DS2 could have eaten that much but DS3 would struggle (even now, rising 7, and that's without mentioning he's too fussy to touch most of it anyway).

melissa83 · 07/06/2014 10:15

Looks a lot to me. Bit more quiche and that woukd be adequate for a meal for myself.

LairyPoppins · 07/06/2014 10:17

I have 2 very active 4 yo boys.
That would be fine for them.

HighwayDragon · 07/06/2014 10:29

Dd would eat that, the plate, the cutlery, and the table.

EnchanciaAnthem · 07/06/2014 10:30

Thanks everyone.

The tortilla chips were these wholegrain ones, as a bit of a treat because my DDR had her cousin here. So not just a load of Doritos.
m.iherb.com/Food-Should-Taste-Good-All-Natural-Tortilla-Chips-Multigrain-5-5-oz-156-g/46189

The quiche was 100g portion and 225 calories for those who are interested. I only know because I have to log the weight and Carb content of all her food.

helpys Ricecakes are good for DD, if she had oatcakes and jam after school her blood sugar would be out of control as she is diabetic. Not that I would give her that as a snack, anyway.

I wouldnt worry op. If you look up adult portion plates they arent that much bigger. People in the uk eat too much.

HecatePropylaea · 07/06/2014 10:32

that looks plenty for a 5 year old. to me.

SavoyCabbage · 07/06/2014 10:39

Whilst that is probably the portion I would give a 5 year old, I would not think,it was unusual or greedy if they wanted more as it's not a big portion either.
