to think that this is an appropriate portion size for a 5 year old?

This was DD's dinner. She is a very healthy weight. My cousin was here with her 4 year old girl, who I gave the same size portion - yet my cousin asked for extra everything for her DD as what I'd put out wasn't 'enough'.

They had ricecakes as an after school snack too.

to think that this is an appropriate portion size for a 5 year old?

That's loads! 1/4 quiche is an adult portion.

DomesticSlobbess · 06/06/2014 19:33

My DS is 3 and that's about the size he has. I watched some super nanny type documentary and it was something like two tablespoons of carbs, something else was as much as they could fit in their hand... my DS would be wondering where the rest was!

DS eats everything though and is tall and skinny. His friend is the same age, double his size yet hardly eats a thing for dinner. All children's appetites are different.

Busymumto3dc · 06/06/2014 19:34

My 5 year old would want two pieces of the quiche!

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 06/06/2014 19:36

1/4 quiche an adult portion?!?!? Wtf........ id starve :D

JammyTodger · 06/06/2014 19:38

My 4 year old DS would want a lot more veg than that. More quiche too probably, but I def wouldn't give crisps (are they crisps?) with a meal. He is slim and healthy.

EnchanciaAnthem · 06/06/2014 19:38

I took a picture sneakily before serving so that I could analyse the portion size to death of course!

the koala is a Bento pick, you can get them on eBay all different kinds of animals and accessories!

Cousin's DD ate everything but had a tantrum about eating towards the end and needed a bit of persuading from my cousin!

My three would be more than happy with that amount, but then I'm often astounded how much some of their friends can eat.

AWimbaWay · 06/06/2014 19:39

Oh, My dcs are 3, 6 and 8 btw!

LoveSardines · 06/06/2014 19:40

depends on so many things, how many calories are being burnt, for instance will have a big impact.

eg I should prob have 1/4 quiche but if I were running x miles a day then i'd need more

these things are not set in stone, everyone is an individual, as long as diets are balanced, weight is normal and people don't feel hungry then all is good surely

Busymumto3dc · 06/06/2014 19:40

My six year old is not overly far of similar portion sizes to me! Yet he is slim and healthy

KeepingUpAnon · 06/06/2014 19:40

That would be a perfect portion for ds2 (age 4) who just has an 'average' appetite.

Ds1 is 6 and could easily eat double that...more often than not ds1 and I have about the same amount of food on our plates.

Both of mine are normal, healthy weights, ds1 just has (and always has since birth) a huge appetite.

PiratePanda · 06/06/2014 19:41

On a good day DS would wolf that down and ask for seconds. On a normal day he'd eat half a tomato and say he was full Hmm

He's on the 50th percentile for everything.

All children eat different amounts. You're overthinking this.

Sarrasin · 06/06/2014 19:41

That's not a 1/4 of a quiche.

More like 1/6 or even 1/8.

As you were Grin

DragonMamma · 06/06/2014 19:42

That would be fine for my 6yo but my 3yo would definitely eat more than that.

CharlesRyder · 06/06/2014 19:42

Ach, I think if your DD is full after that then you are over thinking.

Let your cousin feed her DD how she likes, live and let live and all that.

fledermaus · 06/06/2014 19:43

That's the portion size mine would have from 18 months-4 (not that he would eat quiche or veg, but if he did). It would be lunch rather than the main meal of the day though.

MrsWinnibago · 06/06/2014 19:45

My 6 year old DD would be happy with that portion. She'd probably not eat it all either.

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 06/06/2014 19:55

Apparently the average five year old needs 1800 calories a day. Can go down to 1300 and up as high as 2300. That meal is probably under 300. Looks yummy though!

Cat2014 · 06/06/2014 20:00

That would be just about right for ds (6), but he's a grazer and eats about 6 times a day!

CheeseandGherkins · 06/06/2014 20:01

If that is a quarter or a quiche then they must have redefined what a quarter is...

MrsCakesPremonition · 06/06/2014 20:03

That portion would suit my DS perfectly at 5yo.
However my DD would have needed more at the same age.

Probably not helpful.

lljkk · 06/06/2014 20:06

(Sigh) The only thing DS would eat on that picture is some of the yogurt (maybe). F+Veg refusers are a pain.

Portion size seems about right to me, but it's quite a low fat meal. Not what mine tend to have.

Beehatch · 06/06/2014 20:06

That would be fine for my two 4 and 7, though they also have a cooked meal at school and a small snack at pick up.

Geraldthegiraffe · 06/06/2014 20:06

Would suit mine for lunch, although they'd probably want more like an apply and yoghurt after. They'd eat more for supper.

MyFirstName · 06/06/2014 20:10

It would depend on what they had been doing/eating already that day, and if going through a growth spurt - I would personally have had some crackers/mini cheddars/half a slice of bread in waiting - as sometimes they would want more. Sometimes not.
