To start a new term at the Chalet School?

1000 replies

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

My Aunty went off on an expedition, catching butterflies in the Congo, and she forgot all about me. Luckily I had met some jolly girls in the Christmas hols and remembered they had told me about the Chalet School, so here I am! I haven't got all my uniform yet but Miss Annersley says I can just make do with my velveteen frock for a few days until Matey can take me down to Interlaken to get me kitted out.

DeWee · 09/06/2014 21:37

What do you mean have I read the prospectus? I mean... what sort of new girl would I be if I did things like that? I'd never have a book of my own then?

No I didn't read it, nor did my parents so I can be totally shocked by having to use three languages, and ask why we have a sale at all relevant times. I have my reputation to keep up you know!

Or maybe the bit about the three languages was in another language that no one ever speaks?

JuniperTisane · 09/06/2014 22:21

Lazurda surely the only possible name you could give her is Minette?

VikingLady · 09/06/2014 22:47

JuniperTisane Surely only if she has a doppelganger?

DD is named after a CS character too. I ran through almost all of the character names before i found one DH could tolerate Grin. And I still don't see what was wrong with Elizaveta as a name!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 09/06/2014 23:19

I wanted to call DD Loveday. DH was extremely scathing about that idea!

SweetestThing · 10/06/2014 09:15

I love the name Loveday, but no way would DH consider it for DD. I bought all the CS books (in reprint) for her when she was a baby and used to read them while breastfeeding for hours in the night. When she was old enough to read them, she tried one and tossed it aside. More interested in Jacqueline Wilson!

hels71 · 10/06/2014 09:26

How do you actually say Elizaveta? i have always wondered!
I have not tried my DD with the chalet school yet, she is still a bit young. However my hopes are if she sees me reading them she might try. She enjoys oterh old fashioned books like Milly Molly Mandy and my naughty little sister so I am hopeful....

JoeyMaynardsghost · 10/06/2014 09:30

Elizaveta I say "Eh-Liz-a-veet-a"

I found DD reading Three Go To The Chalet School the other day and looking vaguely Hmm I suppose not enough Zombies for her.

She obviously hasn't read about the Chalet School Milk yet.

Toospotty · 10/06/2014 09:31

I couldn't sleep last night so, spurred on by this thread, hoicked Reunion off the shelf. What an appalling book it is. Everyone spends all their time accusing each other of being fat, and Jo patronising for England (Switzerland?), at one point telling everyone to go to bed early.

It does raise the question of why people call Miss Annersley 'Nan' at the start of the series. Did EBD change her name to Hilda and just abandon Nan, or was it meant to be a crappy nickname?

Vintagejazz · 10/06/2014 10:22

I just finished The Chalet School Goes To It last night. I was a bit Shock at how Joey totally takes over Simone's wedding arrangements, even arranging for her own nieces and nephews to be flowergirls and page boys. I know it was a wartime short notice wedding, but still!

Otherwise I loved the book. It was an unabridged first edition and still has the names of two previous owners written on the inside page - Hazel M. Coulter Christmas 1941 and Susan Walker September 1963.

I loved the descriptions and details. The Armada edition probably left a lot of that out and just included the various escapades of the girls.

Oh, I loved "Goes to it".

Don't suppose anyone's got a transcript? I have a few if anyone's interested......

Vintagejazz · 10/06/2014 10:31

I have to say, I'd forgotten how irritating Simone is though. Even though she's a teacher and about to get married she still hangs on Joey's every word 'Oh Joey can you organise my wedding' 'Oh Joey can you sort out somewhere for me and DH to live after we're married' etc etc.

Tinuviel is your daughter called Emerence, Lavender, Verity???/

"Can I quietly tiptoe in and beg for the transcripts?"

PM me an email address, Natasha and I will make your dreams come true!

thebodylovesspring · 10/06/2014 10:55

Loving this and love the chaiet school books.

Both of my sons share names with the Maynard/Bettany family! Dds don't though I adore Rosamund. Dh didn't.

Joey bloody annoyed me by airways banging on about the name Claire but not using it on any of her own 6 dds.

Totally agree vintage re her taking over Simone's wedding. And how spiteful would it have been to have all the girls as bridesmaids but leave Sybil out???? Serves her right that Margot turns out a demon/bitch.

Agree also with you TooSpotty reunion is fairly bitchy about sophie and maynie being fat. Oh and Cornelia not looking like a millionaire

Jees. I like joey goes to the oberland where she smacks 11 month old Felicity ( the baby flirt eeww) on the arse as she's having a paddy and the child immediately gulps and stops crying yes EBD you never had children did you!

thebodylovesspring · 10/06/2014 10:57

I quite liked Jessane Blossom Cecilia viola myself for dd4. Dh has no sense of adventure!!

SelectAUserName · 10/06/2014 10:59

Have we got - and if not, could we concoct - a definitive list of which transcripts are available amongst us?

Tinuviel · 10/06/2014 11:09

She does have a whole book about her but her name isn't in the title. Feel free to guess but don't post what you think it is. It's quite unusual and would 'out' me!

The main thing that annoys DD about her name is that she can never buy named tat things for herself in gift shops! Otherwise she likes it!

CorrieDale · 10/06/2014 11:10

I wanted Verity for DD. DH vetoed because our surname begins with D and he feared the teasing that a child with the initials VD would attract. Given that unless you know DD is lying you will never suspect she is, it's probably a good thing. He didn't give a reason for the Loveday veto...

thebodylovesspring · 10/06/2014 11:19

Fucking hell Tinuviel I am now going to spend the entire day trying to work out her name! Grin

Vintagejazz · 10/06/2014 11:19

Yes thebody I couldn't believe anyone would deliberately exclude a small child from being a flowergirl while all her cousins of a similar age got chosen. I wonder how Madge felt about it? Smile

OP posts:
Vintagejazz · 10/06/2014 11:22

Hmm. A whole book about her, but name not it title, but is an unusual name?

So it's not Mary Lou, Carola, Barbara, Bride, Peggy, or Richenda.

And Katherine or Nina would fit except neither of them are particularly unusual names.

OP posts:
Wabbitty · 10/06/2014 11:24

Yes please, a definitive list of transcripts is a very good idea.

It really really annoys me that they drop the Marie in Marie Claires name. Her parents gave her that name so what gives Joey the right to just change it and it's not like Marie Claire is of an age that she can give her own opinion.

(I keep thinking of a scenario with a new girl called Katarzyna and Joey saying no that's far too long - we'll call you Kat! and the new girl calmly replying no I don't like Kat. If you must shorten my name please call me Kasia. However I think it's pushing it to have myself, a girl of Greek and English parents with a mother tongue of French to have a Polish name!)

SweetestThing · 10/06/2014 11:42

I have the following transcripts, sent to me by a lovely MNetter last year:
Princess of the CS
Head Girl
Jo of the CS
School at the Chalet
New Mistress
CS and Rosalie
Rivals of the CS
Eustacia

CS books are my go-to books when I need some literary comforting. When I got my cancer dx three years ago, we came home and sat in the garden and I read CS in Exile. It was all my brain could cope with! :)

thebodylovesspring · 10/06/2014 12:14

Is she a gifted chello player?

Oh Joey told Madge all about what a cow Sybil was in highland twins. Personally I would have upped her a spoilt selfish Margot and told get to fuck off.

How about the one where Bride gets a prize and blushes so Madge congratulates Dick and Mollie on having 3 pretty dds in the future instead of just 2.. WTAF.
