To start a new term at the Chalet School?

1000 replies

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

M

TooSpotty · 19/06/2014 07:43

Oops. Mollie Maynard for me.

JoeyMaynardsghost · 19/06/2014 07:49

Yep Mollie.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/06/2014 09:15

Great Ceaser's Bathmat! You gave Goodnight Mister Tom to a child De? She'll be having weeps for a week.

The only antidote (apart from a small sedative of course) is to have her watch the TV adaptation with David Jason. Soooooooooo bad. That accent!

Which leads me to say: who would we cast in a Sunday teatime returning drama series of the Chalet School? Unlimited budget and you can have older actors playing the girls as they're all 33 by the time they leave school anyway

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/06/2014 09:15

Helen Mirren for the Abbess. She's got white hair and looks like she's never needed glasses...

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 19/06/2014 09:26

Oh, I always think Jenny Agutter.

And wotsit off Harry Potter for M-L.

Winona Ryder for Joey.

Possibly Keeley Hawes for Madge?

And Elizabeth Taylor for all of the five zillion violet-eyed characters, of course.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 19/06/2014 09:28

Btw, wasn't it John Thaw in the TV adaptation of Goodnight Mister Tom, or were there two? I'd like John Thaw for Plato in our CS adaptation please.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 19/06/2014 09:33

Maxine Peake for Nell.

Michelle Keegan for Biddy O'Ryan.

fairnotfair · 19/06/2014 09:38

A young Barbara Windsor for Joan Baker?

And Pam St Clement for Matron.

fairnotfair · 19/06/2014 09:48

...or, more seriously, Jessica Brown Findlay for Joey?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/06/2014 10:10

Blush yes, John Thaw. He can't be Plato then, after that crime against telly-watching. How about Daniel Day-Lewis? He's brilliant at effete men who's hair touches their collar Grin

Deffo Hermione for OANO M-L and Pam St Clement is genius!

I think there would have to be two people for Joey as her character changes so dramatically. One 'nice' version, one 'mad as a box of frogs with earphone plaits' version.

Whyamihere · 19/06/2014 10:58

I'm reading New House at the moment and it is where Joey starts to grow her hair, Madge suggests that when it is long enough Joey can put it in 'earphones' and that's exactly what Joey did for the rest of her life (or at least to the last book), it's almost as if her hair became part of her pesonality.

As for who plays who in a film - well that's serious business and not to be contemplated lightly so I'll have to go away and think about that Grin

Happydaysatlast · 19/06/2014 11:35

Sorry was caught up in RL. Buggering thing. Yes Molly Maynard I am.

Jenny agguter for Hilda and the one out of rosemary and thyme for Nell. Miss Trunchbowl.

Joey is difficult as can't think of anyone aggravating enough. Keeley hawes is too sexy.

Matron could be Bridget Jones mother. Never remember names.

Oh how about Emma Thompson for Jo. ( she's not aggravating but could act like it)

Happydaysatlast · 19/06/2014 11:55

No sorry Helen mirrem for Nell and miss trunchbowl for Frau Mieders.

Stokey · 19/06/2014 12:21

Is earphones a Princes Leia type hair style? That's what a lot of them seem to have, never realised it was so popular - or is it just another of EBD's "violet" eyes.

I like the idea of Winona as Joey but maybe we need someone taller? The journo girl from House of Cards is very annoying, she could work. Or Emily thingy who married Ross in Friends and now has some spin-off?

Isn't ML blonde, presumably with cornflower blue eyes? What about the girl from Outnumbered - sufficiently annoying?

DeWee · 19/06/2014 12:23

Ds (who is 3 years younger than dd2) enjoyed Goodnight Mr Tom, but dd2 does the weeps on books quite frequently and I'd forgotten how upsetting it is. i don't think she even got to the point that Zac is killed. I think that might be tonight Sad suddenly finds urgent appointment to go out tonight

Judy Garland would have made a good Joey back in her day. Rather sickly sweet.
I'd like to suggest the girl who played George in the Famous Five (90s version) Jemma Rooper was it? for Grizel. She could play discontented without coming across as too sulky.

I'll put dd1 forward for (young) ML though. She's got long Kenwigses and when it comes to interfering and bossing her siblings she's got the attitude.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/06/2014 12:54

Not sure about Emma Thompson for Jo, what about Emma Thompson for Madge though? She does a good line in repressed gentility (the breaking apart scene in Love Actually, for eg).

Cate Blanchett for Cornelia Flowers!

Happydaysatlast · 19/06/2014 12:56

Dh brought goodnight mister Tom as a cassette for the car back in the day when my older ones were little to listen to on a long car journey.

It was a very very quiet journey to holiday interspersed with years as both Zac and the baby died.

Dh never was a reader so had no idea of the story.

Dick head.

JuniperTisane · 19/06/2014 13:35

The blonde one out of House of Eliot for Madge. Stella Gonet.

Vintagejazz · 19/06/2014 13:47

I had always thought of Winona Ryder for Joe. Glad to see someone else has the same idea. But Emma Thompson would be good too.

Jenny Agutter would be brilliant as Miss Annersley. Patricia Hodge would also be good, but she might be a bit old for the role now. Haydn Gwynn would be an idea, as well.

OP posts:
TooSpotty · 19/06/2014 14:27

Stella Gonet for Madge is inspired. Maybe Louise Lombard for Jo too?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/06/2014 14:36

You can have them at any age you like Vintage it's not real

Actually, what about Patricia Hodge for whasserface, the head teacher of the Saints? Isn't she tall and gaunt? Or thingamy - to the manor born - Penelope Keith!

YY to Stella Gonet for Madge and Louise Lombard would be a good young Jo but I still think we need someone madder for old Jo.

Jennifer Lawrence for Juliet?

TooSpotty · 19/06/2014 14:54

Bit of height shrinkage but Helena Bonham Carter excels in the unhinged performance. And she could do earphones.

fairnotfair · 19/06/2014 15:07

How about Anjelica Huston in her younger days? She could probably ave rocked an earphone or two...

fairnotfair · 19/06/2014 15:19

"ave"?? Have.

I'm dropping my aitches like that awful Vic Coles. Whatever next?
