To start a new term at the Chalet School?

1000 replies

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

I was born in New Zealand; came to live at the Dragon House and had a governess before I started at the CS.

JoeyMaynardsghost · 12/06/2014 18:29

Kisses? That's very um, girly and all un-necessary. Matron will be along in a moment and whisk you off to the San so she can give you something to cure all that.

Does anyone know what's for Abendessen please? I do hope it's veal mit kartoffeln.

Ionacat · 12/06/2014 18:41

With apple pie and garlic gloves for dessert!

SolidGoldBrass · 12/06/2014 18:47

Tinuviel, you are Jesanne Gillibrand and I am a total geek with the memory of an elephant...

JoeyMaynardsghost · 12/06/2014 18:49

Apple pie & garlic cloves - yum! Am I imagining things or did they once make donuts and fried them in castor oil too?

Ewieindwie1 · 12/06/2014 18:52

Gosh, what a day! Moved house, heaved furniture around, fell in a packing case, walked a St Bernard, had a baby AND found time to help one of the Juniors who was sobbing over her prep. Just call me .... a chalet school girl!

Am very keen to get hold of all the lovely transcripts etc that are being discussed but have no clue how to access a Onedrive or 'pm' someone. Sorry, but could anyone explain? Apologies if I am the only techno fool on this thread. Only a CS passion would make me confess!

Tinuviel · 12/06/2014 18:53

You sound like you need to sit down with a nice cup of milk, Ewie! One of Matey's specials. Maybe I should have some and by the time I wake up, all the football will be over.

JassyRadlett · 12/06/2014 19:05

I am going to be hugely irritating and mention that Phil Maynard was Philippa Anne.

The irony in Bride Leads always slew me. 'She is a snob, which is awful, and frankly she has no reason to be a snob because her family are so frightfully common. I, of course, am not a snob.'

ToniWol · 12/06/2014 19:05

You are not imagining it - I think it's in Carola that they fry the donuts in the wrong oil (think it's cod liver oil though - I seem to remember comments about them being fishy).

Not to mention Joyce Lintons sulphur cakes (unless that's in a fill in...)

JoeyMaynardsghost · 12/06/2014 19:15

Toniwol You may well be right! I haven't re-read that one-yet. I seem to recall the sulphur cakes too but can't begin to imagine why you would have sulphur in a kitchen? Just one of EBD's ways of moving the plot forward in a lets-fall-around-the-floor-with-hysterical-laughter way?

TheObligatoryNewGirl · 12/06/2014 19:23

JoeyMaynardsghost there wasn't sulphur in the kitchen. The girls wanted to flavour their cakes with a little saffron, so they went to get it from Matey's supply cupboard and accidently picked up the sulphur.

Do you think there's hope I may become a true Chalet Girl yet?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/06/2014 19:25

The sulphur cakes are in either New House or Jo Returns, I think. I think they are meant to be saffron, but Joyce goes to Matey's cupboard to get the saffron and comes away with sulphur, because they're both yellow...

Tinuviel · 12/06/2014 19:28

Why would Matey have saffron or sulphur? I wasn't aware that either of them had medicinal properties. Although I do seem to remember Madge dosing them all with sulphur 'to cool the blood' in one of the very early books.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 12/06/2014 19:39

Ewie you have to find one of RueDe's posts. To the right of the band with her name on it is an option to 'message poster' - click on that and you'll get a personal message (pm).

Ask her for the log on details of the drive, it's a separate site from here and she'll pass them on. Or indeed, pm me as I have them too.

At the very top of the talk page there's a bar with 'my mumsnet' and a wee message icon, when you have a red dot on that then you have a reply!

thebodylovesspring · 12/06/2014 19:41

Right. I am,

A bit of a podge,

I moved a book to get another girl into trouble so she would hate another girl who was friendly with another girl I liked?

I went to Australia.

DeWee · 12/06/2014 19:50

Mary something Woosley perhaps? In Barbara.

thebodylovesspring · 12/06/2014 20:00

DeWee Mary woodley. And yes in Barbara. Grin

I had a neice who was put into my 22year old arms at a day old as my parents both died!

Despite the fact that I would have only been 36 I
Am worn out providing for my neice and after a minor op I die. I leave you a letter saying i am glad to go

36 remember 36!!

Who am I?

TooSpotty · 12/06/2014 20:05

You are Jacynth Hardy's aunt but your name escapes me.

DeWee · 12/06/2014 20:08

That's Aunty! Can't remember her actual name but she's Jacelyth (can't spell tonight) Hardy is it?'s aunt.

36 was she! Goodness I feel old!

That letter was EBD at her best. Never fails to get me sniffing. Dd2 was nearly as bereft as when Dumblerdore died, and that took her a good week to get over. Grin

WelshWereRabbit · 12/06/2014 20:14

Hello - I read my mother's chalet school books as a young teen, have never come across anyone else who has heard of them, let alone read them ... Until now! Would love to reread and am so excited that there is a drive with transcripts - please please pretty please can someone tell me how to gain access? I loaned my original HBs of School at the Chalet and Jo of the Chalet School to a girl in Guides and she never gave them back and I was too shy to ask. I hate to think what it would cost to replace them now, so a transcript would be super!

hels71 · 12/06/2014 20:14

Was she really only 36? Oh my...............

Alicebannedit · 12/06/2014 20:24

SockQueen "I thought at Eton they used surnames, with "major" and "minor" added if there was more than one brother at the school?"

And if three brothers I believe it was major, minor and minimus.

SolidGoldBrass · 12/06/2014 20:26

To be fair to 'Auntie' people did age faster due to lousy diets/poverty/overwork in those days. And wasn't she disabled in some way after a cycling accident as well?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/06/2014 20:38

Yup, cycling accident lamed her in some way, hence her being glad to go, plus she worked herself to the bone to pay for the Chalet School. God, 36. Shock

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/06/2014 20:38

Was her name Sylvia?
