To start a new term at the Chalet School?

1000 replies

Vintagejazz · 06/06/2014 14:23

Happy for this to be moved to Chat if posters agree but thought I'd start it here as this is where we've all been loitering without permission when we should be doing our housework homework.

So welcome to a new term everyone. Cases upstairs to the dormitories, form lists on the notice board. And you'll all be pleased to hear that even though we've moved to a different location, Joey has tracked us - -down moved in next door, so we'll still be seeing too much-- plenty of her Smile

Jean of Storms is not a good book. I quite like the School by The River though. My favourite non chalet is Chudleigh Hold.

EElizavetaofBelsornia · 11/06/2014 19:30

Where do I find the onedrive site?

lightahead · 11/06/2014 19:42

I have been nostalgic about the chalet school books for some time having read various threads on mumsnet. I scoured my parents house looking for lost books and found one, looking on ebay I was horrified at the prices. Today I went into my local cancer research shop and was so excited to see lines of chalet school books, I have brought 20 for 10 pounds! lots of bedtime reading for me.

Efferlunt · 11/06/2014 19:52

I've been lurking on thread for a while, not much to say as I've not read any of the books in years. I did love them but wonder how I would find them as an adult. I did manage to read a few chapters at a holiday cottage once, think it was Eustasia I was horrified by the lack of medical knowledge in it which I assume reflects EDB and not best practice at the time.

Also found it hard to keep up with who is who in the Bettany/russel/Maynard/venables/adoptee clan. Does anyone know if there are bios available anywhere?

AuditAngel · 11/06/2014 20:43

Rue please may I have access to the one drive? (And an idiot guide in how to use it!)

Thanks

WilsonFrickett · 11/06/2014 21:02

I feel a name change coming on my lambs. But whom? The one and only Mary-Lou? The Robin (unlikely). Kathie Ferrars, perhaps.... Or Matey???

Anothernameagainforthis · 11/06/2014 21:06

Efferlunt what do you mean about a lack of medical knowledge? It's off to bed with you, after some of Matey's special milk, and a sing-song from the Robin in the morning, my lamb.

Anothernameagainforthis · 11/06/2014 21:07

I want a name change too... Hmm...

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 11/06/2014 21:09

... That's better! For now, anyway.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 11/06/2014 21:12

Joey would have been standing there saying "serves them right, they didn't kiss Robin goodnight" or something

YES! Exactly. It really jars for me, when EBD starts talking through the process of writing a school story (via Jo's first), and says how important it is that the characters aren't too "good" or too "bad" when she seems so unable to resist idealising her own favourites. I do understand that Joey has to grow up and therefore outgrows certain behaviours, but it's still poorly done I think.

ToniWol · 11/06/2014 21:24

Hi All

I've finished with some organising for the Library Prefect (I presume that's what RueDeWakening is...?) and have uploaded the transcripts I have to the OneDrive and numbered those that were already on there without numbers according to the Chambers system (www.chaletschool.org.uk/ebd-books/chambers-and-girls-gone-by).

As it's not my OneDrive I'm not sure about giving out the details so publicly but I'm sure if you message the Library Prefect she'll give you the details Wink

It's not quite a full set - but it's only got smaller gaps now.

pontefractals · 11/06/2014 21:37

OoooOooooh!

Beautifully done, ToniWol and RueDeWakening, am now ridiculously excited... And thank you to everyone else who's dredged up transcripts.

I think I may require a draught tonight. Unless anyone has a golden voice and can sing me to sleep?

Ionacat · 11/06/2014 21:37

Another lurker here, dropped off by random aunt and very excited to be here.
I remember being really disappointed in not being able to go to a school like the Chalet school, although I hate milk so that's going to put me in. Matey's bad books for a start.

RobinHumphries · 11/06/2014 21:37

Claps her hands like a true Chalet girl.

I am most impressed with our Library Prefect and ToniWol (did Auntie Joey come up with that name?) they have done an amazing job and I nominate them both for the Margot Venables prize

Whyamihere · 11/06/2014 21:38

Wow, I couldn't get on line for a while and this thread has streaked ahead, I feel I've been left in with the middles while everyone else has become seniors.

I'd love access to the transcripts, who do I need to ask to get access?

RueDeWakening · 11/06/2014 21:38

Ooh excellent, well done Toni! I always secretly fancied being Library Pree.

The OneDrive and email it's on were set up just for this, so feel free to share them to like-minded individuals just make sure it's not Joey or Mary-Lou.

Whyamihere · 11/06/2014 21:40

Robin - isn't it too late for you to be up, what with your delicate constitution and all. You should have been tucked up in bed by 6.30. You'll need a nice drink of milk after all this excitement.

RobinHumphries · 11/06/2014 21:43

Good point. I'm going to drink my creamy milk and trot off to bed. Night everyone

PourquoiPas · 11/06/2014 21:59

Ooh oooh, please could I have the details of the drop box thingy?

I'm just rereading them for the first time as an adult and some bits are so sad, like all the bettany children being sent off to stay with aunts at 2 or so, the elders not meeting second twins (and presumably their parents) until they are what, 10? :( as a child I just accepted it but now I could almost cry for the poor little admittedly fictional mites.

A nice big glass of wine creamy milk for me I think, then I'm off for a quick clean up in the splashery and then I'll snuggle under my plumeax in Leafy. Lots of jolly japes to plan for tomorrow my lambs!

Whyamihere · 11/06/2014 22:04

Thank you Rue, I'll attempt to access them. I'm so excited that I've found like minded people. In real life I don't think I've ever met anyone who has even read the books, or maybe they are all just secret readers of the books like I was.

ToniWol · 11/06/2014 22:07

I was lucky enough to find the CBB about 9 years ago - there's friends I've made on there that I still have now and we try to get together at least once each year for general madness and hilarity.

And now to bed for me as well. A busy day tomorrow and I need my sleep.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 11/06/2014 22:10

Oh wow, ToniWol! I shall be spending many happy hours reading my way through that lot! Especially the non-CS titles that I haven't seen before.

Must make sure my late night reading doesn't give me brain fever...especially as I am also "busy" Wink and shall be busier still in exactly 4 weeks.

Toospotty · 11/06/2014 22:11

Please can have the details too, lovely Library Pree?

JuniperTisane · 11/06/2014 22:14

How exciting! Is it RueyDaWakening I need to PM for details of the OneDrive or ToniWol? And can I share it with my sister?

SheherazadeSchadenfreude · 11/06/2014 22:15

And me too please!
