They have to be these slapstick self depreciating "typical" English "lady" making prattish remarks about themselves.

Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Emily Blunt to name a few.

Interview with her today (forgive me it is the Mail celeb page) about how "she nearly killed Tom Cruise" oh Hahahahahahaha "slaps thigh" Hmm pity she didn't succeed.

Why are they all like this when interviewed on the Red Carpet or whatever.

Does my head in - is this what Americans think English women are like?

Judy Dench, Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz...

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:02

Judi and Helen maybe but Rachel has a certain "irritation" about her it's like they have to be the female version of Hugh cock fop head Grant.

The highest paid British actress in USA for years was Jane Leeves from Frasier.

Her accents was plain weird!

They also all lost lots of weight.

SunshineOutdoors · 05/06/2014 21:04

What's Kate Beckinsale like? She doesn't seem to come across that way?

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:10

Not sure she doesn't say much - maybe wise? - OH LOVES her.

Emma Watson?

Maggie Smith?

Vanessa Redgrave?

diddl · 05/06/2014 21:18

Interview with who?

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:19

The older ones not so much but Emma Watson has been an offender tbh.

Interview with Emily Blunt.

MissYamabuki · 05/06/2014 21:20

Catherine Zeta-Jones?

ShoeWhore · 05/06/2014 21:20

Keira Knightley? I don't understand what the irritation would be with Rachel Weisz? (I saw her at an airport once - she was incredibly beautiful irl, even more so than on screen - and so tiny)

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:22

Hmmm, who are the names that pop into my head first? Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench. And those three have ironic self deprecation down to a science!

A lot of younger American actresses try to pull it off, like the three you mentioned, so I don't think it's just young British actresses. I guess they think it makes them look 'humble' or something. I think it just makes them look silly. You have to be a person of some substance to get away with it, IMHO.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/06/2014 21:24

Kristen Scott Thomas?

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:24

Keira does it when interviewed and her character in Love Actually is REALLY annoying.

OP posts:
YouTheCat · 05/06/2014 21:24

Julie Andrews is British.

I don't Emma Watson does it tbh. She just comes across as being herself.

YouTheCat · 05/06/2014 21:24

*think

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:25

Acrossthepond55 I agree.

Dd is a sound engineer and apparently the weird english accents is to do withbthe recording system and its speed or something Confused helen mirren and dame judy are legends they are huge in thevus

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:29

I am not slagging of the likes of Dames Helen and Judi O just hate the way a lot of the younger ones just feel the need to be a bit dickish and talk about Spanx and "oh look at what a dick I am". IYSWIM

I think you're under the misconception that these young actresses are supremely confident.

I've met a few actresses in my time and none of them have been confident at all in real life.

joanofarchitrave · 05/06/2014 21:31

Marianne Jean-Baptiste? Not so much. I guess she's done more telly.

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:36

I have met many actresses. Under no misconceptions everyone goes into acting for different reasons like every other career,

Isn't self deprecating humour a thing of British women though?

I was talking to a few ex-pat mums about this. When abritish women meet, they excuse themselves in a way that for example Dutch or American women don't.

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 21:38

Hmm but I find it very forced esp Kate Winslett.

DontPutMeDownForCardio · 05/06/2014 21:44

Do you not think they're trying to be personable?
