They have to be these slapstick self depreciating "typical" English "lady" making prattish remarks about themselves.

Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Emily Blunt to name a few.

Interview with her today (forgive me it is the Mail celeb page) about how "she nearly killed Tom Cruise" oh Hahahahahahaha "slaps thigh" Hmm pity she didn't succeed.

Why are they all like this when interviewed on the Red Carpet or whatever.

Does my head in - is this what Americans think English women are like?

If they are it doesn't work.

Catherine Zeta Jones? That dame just ooozes old school glamour and integrity with no hint of Jolly hockey sticks affectations at all.

Weathergames · 05/06/2014 22:52

Yes I agree about CZJ.

I don't really understand the opening post. Are we talking about British actors that annoy us when in America? I need to add Emily Mortimer to that list. I used to really like her but she's changed since she moved States side. Emily Blunt I don't get at all she's the same ad Keira to me. Over rated.

BiscuitMillionaire · 05/06/2014 23:19

I think Emma Thompson is brilliant in interviews, very funny and arch, and clearly super-intelligent.

Mrsjayy · 05/06/2014 23:27

I like emma Thompson she is funny In interviews

thatgoesinthere · 06/06/2014 00:31

Sally Hawkins, Tilda Swinton, Carey Mulligan, Samantha Morton, Miranda Richardson...all off the top of my head, hugely successful and Oscar nommed.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/06/2014 00:31

Keira is a sweetheart - yes to quite self-deprecating, but it's genuine.

thatgoesinthere · 06/06/2014 00:37

...and Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 06/06/2014 01:07

. . . and Kelly Macdonald

steff13 · 06/06/2014 01:23

Maybe it's because I'm an American, but all the actresses named seem to me like regular people in interviews. I'm not certain that I understand your criticism.

I don't have an preconceived notion of what British women are like.

PrincessBabyCat · 06/06/2014 01:35

Americans don't have preconcieved ideas of what British women are like because we don't care enough to think outside our own country

The British stereotype here is that you guys are a bunch uptight people who drink tea 24/7 and have bad dental. Wink

But, I really don't see Emma Watson doing anything that Jennifer Lawrence isn't. British people in interviews seem normal to me, I don't notice them doing anything weird that makes them stand out.

You know, the first reference I ever heard to British people having bad teeth was in the movie Austin Powers. I don't think that particular belief is that prevalent anymore, or at least it isn't among people I know.

I agree.

Yeah, the first time I heard about it was a couple years ago. But I was told it's a common stereotype, so I assumed I was just late in the game since the only reference I had to British people was documentary speakers.

PrincessBabyCat · 06/06/2014 02:26

British vs American accents

There you go. That's basically how Brits look to Americans. Grin

Trapper · 06/06/2014 03:42

Dame Angela Lansbury?

Cuteypatootey · 06/06/2014 03:45

Well, they do loads of the press junket interviews one after another and they have to seem interesting so they probably have to make up a few things to give the interviewer something to write about.

TroyMcClure · 06/06/2014 04:31

I can't forget knightly in bend it like beckham. If I were her agent I would buy up every remaining copy to expunge her wooden awful awful performance

Weathergames · 06/06/2014 07:26

She was wooden in Love Actually....

Bad teeth? Confused

Emma Thompson was great in Stranger Than Fiction. Despairing chain-smoking writer with writer's block, accidentally trying to kill Will Ferrell all the time.

Weathergames · 06/06/2014 08:27

I found Love Punch a bit cheesy.
