To find swimming abysmal

I just hate it. I hate the floors, I hate the dirty wet loos, I hate the screaming, I hate the long mirrors reflecting your swimming cosied body, I hate the chlorine, I hate the life gaurds all buff and toned and fabulous, i hate the gritty floors, i hate the perves, I hate the snot, I hate the hairy drains, I hate being half naked infront of strangers, I hate the slippiness, I hate all the inconsiderate splashes, I hate the faff, I hate the dry skin and hair it gives me...

But, alas I must go for my dd (who always hates it, but I'm told to encourage her anyway - she is one)

I stopped taking DD2 at 2.5yo. She started lessons at 3 when she could go in unaccompanied. I have to sit on the side and crochet but I can live with that. It's worth every penny not to have to take them in the water.

Sick of the getting out of the pool tantrum, the getting out the shower tantrum, the getting dry tantrum and the getting dressed tantrum, of her and DD1 (5yo) who has a lesson at the same time.

Sweetasstevia · 03/06/2014 20:06

YANBU - I loath it - please add the following pet hates:
Lockers too small to put much more than a pair of knickers in, new fangeled communal showers ( I can't get properly clean of chlorine with my cossie

Sweetasstevia · 03/06/2014 20:08

... On). And communal changing villages - my toddler worked out how to slide the lock back on our tiny changing unit thing in less than 30 seconds exposing my naked bum to all and sundry :(

Mabelface · 03/06/2014 20:10

I also hate swimming and I'm crap at it, despite lessons. I just don't have the coordination required.

OP YANBU.

I grew up by the beach and adore swimming, but no way in hell am I (or my DC) going anywhere near a public pool.

Strangers' body fluid soup and dirty wet floors.

KeepOnPloddingOn · 03/06/2014 20:50

Yanbu.

You forgot to mention the verrucas.

Sparklingbrook · 03/06/2014 20:56

And the Molluscum Contagiosum

ScrambledEggAndToast · 03/06/2014 21:03

YANBU. Plus, if you walked down the street in your bra and pants people would think you had lost the plot but when you strut around in a bikini, which is basically bra and pants, no-one bags an eyelid Confused

BertieBotts · 03/06/2014 21:06

Don't do it! You don't have to. Just send her for swimming lessons later. The kind where you don't have to get in Grin

arethereanyleftatall · 03/06/2014 21:07

The only reason you should take a one year old swimming is if they enjoy it. Completely and utterly pointless otherwise.

Nocomet · 03/06/2014 21:15

Swimming is absolutely fine once it's Tshirt, cropped trousers and sandals weather.

Hell is our local pools tiny changing room for DCs lessons when it's raining, the floors muddy and you have coats, shoes and socks to get on and off uncoperative DCs who want to climb the lockers with their DFs and you don't even get a swim your self.

I like swimming, even it gruby public pools.

Although a certain Lido with a very fit life guard or the Med are better.

Dysfunctional · 03/06/2014 21:20

You have all made some great points on this thread. Swimming when it's cold outside is grim- better when you want to cool down in the summer. It's usually emptier too as everyone else is outside in the son.

I do enjoy swimming as an activity though I can only do old lady's breaststroke (head out of water) which I believe is terrible for the neck.

AllDirections · 03/06/2014 21:34

When DS2 turned 8 I did a little dance knowing that I never had to do it ever again.

DD3 is 8 in January. I'm planning my dance now Grin

Sparklingbrook · 03/06/2014 21:39

Grin All. It was brilliant-he went to splash hour with DS1, and I sat in the cafe with a book and gave an occasional wave. Perfect.

TheVioletHour · 03/06/2014 21:42

Yanbu. The being in the water bit is tolerable if its not too busy. But as for the rest.......

ByTheSea · 03/06/2014 21:45

I love swimming but hate indoor pools, which it sounds like the OP is describing. I love swimming in the ocean or in a nice outdoor pool when it's hot outside.

SirChenjin · 03/06/2014 21:47

YANBU at all. Swimming is the most pointless, least enjoyable sport I can think of - cold changing rooms, soaking floors, tiny cubicles, showing off your body to complete strangers, swimming about in water that has wee, dead skin, spit, sweat and all sorts of other things floating in it, freezing water, the palaver of getting yourself and the DCs dried afterwards....hate hate hate swimming.

Lorialet · 03/06/2014 21:47

YANBU. The thing that makes me gag the most is people swimming a length, then blowing their nose into their hands and washing it off in the water. I have only ever seen men do this though, not women. This is in posh heath club pools too, not the public baths.

Lorialet · 03/06/2014 21:48

Sorry, not just the public baths. I have seen them do it there too, the filthy beggars.

Lesleythegiraffe · 03/06/2014 21:55

I absolutely hate swimming too. All the palaver of getting undressed, taking ages before I can bear to get into the water and little kids getting in my way when I'm trying to do proper swimming.

My worst problem is that I'm scared to wear my contact lenses in case they get knocked out but am too short-sighted to go without them.

Simple solution is - I never go swimming Smile

AllDirections · 03/06/2014 22:07

and I sat in the cafe with a book and gave an occasional wave. Perfect.

I'm salivating already Grin

hoobypickypicky · 03/06/2014 22:14

Lesley, you and I both! Hate swimming? Simple solution - don't do it!

WitchWay · 03/06/2014 22:16

I like swimming in the sea in a warm place - when I say "swimming" I mean "bobbing about" really.

Apart from that not for me - boring, cold, wet Hmm & nasty, also I'm too short-sighted to manage without glasses or contact lenses, which isn't ideal.
