To think that people should not let their children stand in supermarket trolleys

...with their grubby little shoes that have potentially tramped through dog shit and who knows what else. People put their food in there!

Pregnancy hormones making me very grrr today so everything is more irritating than normal, but still. It pisses me off that I'm denying myself all sorts of foods I like to avoid the slim possibility of complications (I've lost two pregnancies already this year so being super paranoid and doing everything by the book this time), but I don't know what contaminants are being introduced to my food trolley by people who can't say no to their kids. It's not difficult to explain that we don't put shoes in places where food goes. Bet they wouldn't let their kids walk around in their shoes on their kitchen benches.

Grrrrr! Angry

...and breathe!

I saw a trolley tip once. Child was riding on the end of it but must have somehow unbalanced it because there was an almighty crash and child hit the floor with a thump followed by trolley hitting him.
My lasting memory of the event was the bollocking his mother was giving out as he wailed poor kid.

That's the reason I don't like seeing kids stood in or on trollies. Germs are neither here nor there but cracked skulls are a distinct possibility.

Whether children stand in trolleys or not, they are still filthy. Exposed to weather conditions, bird shit, and all sorts outside, a kids shoe won't add much to that.

also, what food would actually physically touch the trolley? It's all in packaging or has a skin. I'm struggling to think of anything which would go directly into the trolley then into your mouth Hmm

By the way, I have 3 kids and so often find myself having one of them go In the 'big bit' (not usually standing mind since this could be dangerous) and I find it very amusing when people give me 'that look'

Mrs - I do my shopping on ocado. However we do neee to do shopping sometimes ie for cake ingredients last min, extra milk, baby stuff etc.

My nephew tipped over in a trolley and smashed his front teeth - it was 3 or 4 years before his second ones grew in. His devastated mum was reminded of it every time he smiled.

Not an accident you'd want to risk for your child.

FullySwindonian · 03/06/2014 00:29

Don't forget the rats that run along the handlebars and skitter about the parked trollies scavenging for crumbs Grin.

Love rats though.

3 year old DS during my last shopping trip. He goes inside the trolley every time, but he never stands in it.

I am sorry it upsets you, but it makes my life so much easier.

I can vouch that you can have a quite an impressive accident in a shopping trolley.

That I was 19 at the time and it was Saturday night in Oban and my mates thought it would be a good idea to stuff me into a trolley and let it go down a steep hill and there was beer involved is not relevant

goldopals · 03/06/2014 08:49

I do not care about children in trolleys. I know that there are possible risks, but I do not get worked up about it. The worst accident I have seen was in the supermarket when I had convinced Dad to let me get in the trolley ( age 26)

Doesn't bother me. But when I'm on my own with a 19wo and a 2 and a half year old I'm afraid he goes in the trolley. Though he is told to sit and he does to give him credit. He like to pile all the shopping on top of him. Never ask me to buy you a loaf of bread Grin

SquirrelledAway · 03/06/2014 10:28

Or a 25 kg bag of cat food?

trikken · 03/06/2014 10:49

Shop online. No worries about shit then.

I don't like children in them because of them potentially falling out/getting run over after falling out. But its not my problem if other parents put their children in,it's their own risk to take.

Well they might still use a trolley to collect your order if it's done instore. But if you are lucky they will bag it up straight away and avoid any trolley contact.

Have we unearthed another reason to shop at Ocado - "no shitty trolleys were used in the preparation of your order."

trikken · 03/06/2014 12:25

I know at Tesco they have special home delivery carts, they dont go in the trollies at all.

specialsubject · 03/06/2014 12:34

Op - put your food in your reusable bags while you shop. Problem solved.

kids are not supposed to stand in trolleys because they can and have fallen out head-first.

aermingers · 03/06/2014 12:39

My husband does this. I find it mortifying.

aermingers · 03/06/2014 12:40

Puts the toddler in the trolley, not standing in it himself.
