To think that people should not let their children stand in supermarket trolleys

...with their grubby little shoes that have potentially tramped through dog shit and who knows what else. People put their food in there!

Pregnancy hormones making me very grrr today so everything is more irritating than normal, but still. It pisses me off that I'm denying myself all sorts of foods I like to avoid the slim possibility of complications (I've lost two pregnancies already this year so being super paranoid and doing everything by the book this time), but I don't know what contaminants are being introduced to my food trolley by people who can't say no to their kids. It's not difficult to explain that we don't put shoes in places where food goes. Bet they wouldn't let their kids walk around in their shoes on their kitchen benches.

Grrrrr! Angry

...and breathe!

I got serious rage whenever some cowbag had it and was using it for one baby and a handbag.

Unless it was a Hermes, natch Grin

passmethewineplease · 02/06/2014 11:51

YAB a bit U.

We've done it

passmethewineplease · 02/06/2014 11:54

Oops pressed post too soon!

We've done it before and DD was sat down, the second she stood up she was out and she knew it. She was complaining of her legs being tired part way round.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/06/2014 12:30

There is a petition campaigning for more sn trolleys here, if anyone is interested in signing.

Done, Hazeyjane. My friend's son would really benefit from this type of modified trolley, it's a great idea.

SqutterNutBaush · 02/06/2014 12:34

YANBU.

Children shouldn't be standing in trolleys but not because of cleanliness, because its a serious hazard. Having seen a toddler fall out smashing his nose open on the floor its not something I'm comfortable with.

Purplepoodle · 02/06/2014 13:33

Believe me you want my 5 year old in the trolley (brothers sat in the seats) otherwise he is running, screaming, knocking old ladies over or displays. Sitting in the main of the trolley is the safest place for everyone.

owlbegoing · 02/06/2014 13:49

With regards the shitty shoes...there's likely to be just as much shit on the wheels of the "oap shopping trolleys" that everyone seems to be using these days. People put them in their supermarket trolleys too.

KatieKaye · 02/06/2014 13:52

It's dangerous.
Iy might be fun, but so are a lot of dangerous things do that isn't a reason to do it.
A cracked skull isn't worth it. Those warnings are there for a reason.

SquirrelledAway · 02/06/2014 13:52

YANBU, I always think about the shitty shoes thing (and yes I know it's the handles that are going to be the mankiest bit). Although I can see that it's sometimes preferable to the little shitbags darlings being allowed to run riot round Asbo. Guess I was lucky with mine that they liked going to the supermarket and wanted to walk round and help as soon as they could (it did help that our supermarket gave away free bribes cookies).

indigo18 · 02/06/2014 13:57

Purplepoodle, why don't you control your 5 year old, then? he is old enough to be taught how to behave.

popmimiboo · 02/06/2014 14:32

Never worried about it from a hygiene point as everything I buy at the supermarket is packaged, but YANBU about not letting kids stand up. DH managed to catapult DS (then aged 3) from a trolley in the carpark when he accidentally hit a big bump with the front wheels. DS literally shot out, spun head over heels and (thank God) landed on his feet, dazed but unhurt!
I've been so strict about trolleys ever since!

Chippednailvarnish · 02/06/2014 14:39

OMG.

An Op who accepts that they are BU with grace and humour.

Shock
IhavetowaitHOWlong · 02/06/2014 16:09

takes a bow for chipped

I still think kids shouldn't stand in trolleys, though more from a safety standpoint now than a hormonally neurotic germophobe one. I accept that others have valid reasons for taking a different view though. Thanks again for the reality check.

Have signed the petition Hazeyjane

Thankyou for signing the petitionSmile. Those trolleys are such a simple thing, that can make life so much easier for children with disabilities and their families.

Indigo - I don't know Purplepoodles circumstances, but if, for example, a child has special needs, it is not as simple as a child being old enough to be taught how to behave.

JJXM · 02/06/2014 16:23

My DS has severe autism but as the double seated trollies at our local supermarket are the only ones that don't require the one pound deposit everyone takes them. DS is 4 and under 15kg. But without putting him in the trolley we would be unable to go shopping as he lies on the floor screaming and refuses to move. But our local has introduced trollies with cars on the front so hopefully that will work. But yes to more SN trollies.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 02/06/2014 16:24

Good luck on sanitising your DCs lives, a bit of trolley diet is the least of your worries!!

Patilla · 02/06/2014 16:41

Do an online food order instead?

Your greater issue most likely is all the campylobacter on the food packaging itself.

Horrible bug.

bionic77 · 02/06/2014 16:48

Congratulations on the pregnancy.

What items of food are you putting directly onto the bottom of the trolley that you then won't be unwrapping, washing or cooking?

I think you need to have a cup of tea and stop thinking of things to be upset about.

IhavetowaitHOWlong · 02/06/2014 16:49

Nothing to do with sanitising my DC's lives, I certainly don't live in an anti-bacced house and DS is a typically grubby toddler. Think I was just in a grump because I couldn't have any brie Envy

OP posts:
SquirrelledAway · 02/06/2014 17:28

Pssst - I ate soft cheese and pate when I was pregnant with DC2, they were the only things I could keep down.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 02/06/2014 17:43

Also never seen a trolley tip over, you would have to be going some to make that happen!

Artandco · 02/06/2014 17:45

Sorry a little ott.

I have sil 2 month twins and 2 year old ATM as ill, as well as own 3 and 4 year old. I can assure you when we needed extra baby milk yesterday and I was alone I put twins in double seat, and 2 and 3 year old in trolley with some books. 4 year old walked. Having 5 children instead of 2 all of a sudden for last 2 weeks is something I wasn't expecting! I didn't have time or energy to make sure three children were close to trolley. Had I just been with my 2 both would have walked.

The trolleys get covered with bird shit, leaked food and cleaning stuff etc etc. x2 toddlers sitting nicely are hardly going to make a difference. I decided it was safer they were in and could fall, than walking and hit by other trolleys or lost

IhavetowaitHOWlong · 02/06/2014 17:54

I ate lots of things I technically shouldn't have while pregnant with DS too squirrelled, I understand that the risks involved are very low, but having had 2MC since I don't want to be left wondering if it was something I did should the worst happen again. I'm being such a good girl this time. It sometimes results in unreasonable grumpiness as I demonstrated this morning!

So I can't have a cup of tea either unfortunately bionic. Well, decaf, but that's just not the same

Does all seem very futile with the tales of all the mank on trolleys though. You're all right, kids' shoes are probably the lesser of many evils.

Anyway, as previously stated I was BU and appreciate the reality check. Now I really do have to step away from MN and do something productive - there's only so much laziness being up-duffed can justify!

KatieKaye · 02/06/2014 21:21

For those who have never seen a trolley tip over - how is that relevant?
I never actually saw anybody go through the windscreen of a car before seat belts were made compulsory, but I did know there was a risk.
Children on scooters wear helmets because their parents decide there is a risk.
The risk of injury falling from a trolley might be small, but it is a real risk and more damage done than falling from a scooter.

MrsFlorrick · 02/06/2014 21:50

You could always use Ocado? Thus avoid all shitty trolleys.
