SIL looked shocked when I told her. How often do your kids get a hairwash?

My teens mind their own bathing schedule. My six year old dd gets a bath and head wash every other day. She is sporty and often sweaty at the end of the day. I hate to tuck her up with dirty hair.

Everyone in this house has their hair washed once a week, adults and children!

kiwimumof2boys · 02/06/2014 09:31

Twice a week, after swimming. (Mainly to get smell of cholrine out)

Birdsgottafly · 02/06/2014 09:39

For those who only wash once/twice a week, you must be blessed with living in an area with not much head lice activity.

I always think you should go with what your child needs.

I hit puberty early and had very greasy hair, but wasn't allowed to wash it more than twice a week (70's), it set me up with damaged self esteem for quite a while.

I wash my DSes a lot - probably 5 nights out of 7..... They are either filthy (DS2 always comes out of pre-school with around a gallon of paint on him) or we swim 3/4 times a week so chlorine and suncream gets in it. Water is very soft though so doesn't seem to be doing any harm

BauerTime · 02/06/2014 09:56

Surely most children have their hair washed either, when they get food or other muck in it, or when it looks or smells otherwise dirty? Some children will give themselves a dunk in the bath and may even enjoy having their hair washed. Others will scream blue murder if water goes anywhere near their face and will only have theirs done when absolutely necessary.

At the moment (DS 10 months) has a bath every day as he is usually covered in poo/food/dribble plus its part of his routine and ill chuck some bubbly water over his head and give it a rub to remove food etc but ive never used an actual shampoo on it so does that count as a hair wash?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/06/2014 09:59

We've only had headlice a couple of times (DCs aged 8 and 10). We do step up the frequency of washing, combing etc when it happens. Otherwise once or twice a week is fine for them.

Limelight · 02/06/2014 10:02

Once a week. Any more and there would be revolution I tell you,

Xihha · 02/06/2014 10:03

Birds, I check the DCs hair everyday when i brush it, why would i need to shampoo it to check? Obviously I do wash it more often if I've found any because of treating it but DD is so anti-hair washing that I can't check her whilst washing it anyway as she wont sit still.

DTDs (8) have a shower & full hair wash on Sundays & Wednesdays and a rinse on Tuesday at the swimming pool.

Stinkle · 03/06/2014 11:07

I have 2 DDs, both with long hair

12 year old DD - probably every day, every other day at least

8 year old DD - every 2/3 days

They both shower and just wash their hair when they're in there.

DD1 is going through puberty at the moment and gets quite whiffy so chooses to shower each morning. Her hair seems quite greasy if left more than every other day

CrushedVelvet · 03/06/2014 11:11

DS (6): 0nce a week, just in bath water + Oilatum (for his eczema) on Docs orders. Dr advised that overwashing strips the scalp of its natural oils, leading to temporary skin drying and worsened eczema.

Plus a rinse in the shower once a week after swimming. It's never been shampooed.

He is not prone to decorating his hair with dirt, so why do it more often? It doesn't smell, and people often comment on how nice it looks.

My own gets done every 3 days. As an ancient child of the 60s/70s, when many of us grew up only having a bath once a week, I've noticed that the older you get, the more often it seems to need doing -- and the more often you wash it, the more often it needs it. I.e. it gets greasy earlier the more frequently you wash it, probably because your body over-reacts to the need to replenish its natural oils.

mawbroon · 03/06/2014 11:16

Mine are 8 and 4. They bath or shower almost every day, but their hair only gets rinsed, and not even every time. I could count the number of times they have been shampooed on one hand.

But they both have short hair. I don't know what our routine would be if they had long hair.

ElizabethLemon · 03/06/2014 11:42

Once or twice a week for my 3 year old. Baths are usually everyday but occasionally we skip and have a sink wash instead.

HemlockStarglimmer · 03/06/2014 12:17

Daily bath and weekly hair wash after swimming for my nearly 10 year old. Her hair is long and thick and tangles really easily.

Thanks to Mumsnet I now know about argan oil. Makes a huge difference to the tangling problem.

I wash my shoulder length, tangly hair three times a week. Frequently enough for this lazy moo.

Clutterbugsmum · 03/06/2014 13:30

Daily baths, but dd2 & ds once a week they are 5 & 6 but dd1 who is 10 hair needs to be washed twice a week now.

iamdivergent · 03/06/2014 13:42

Mine shower every third day so yanbu. It's a nightmare getting dd2 in at that frequency. They are not dirty and don't look dirty either; me on the other hand, I need to wash mine every day or it looks gross Sad

Sallystyle · 03/06/2014 14:44

Once or twice a week.
