To be annoyed at Boots or at least the lady who works there

Buying some cow and gate stage 1 formula for my 6 month old and asked if I could pay with points on my advantage card, her response was no you can't as we like to promote breastfeeding.
Err how does giving points or redeeming points when buying a stage 1 formula affect a decision on whether to breast feed or not? And also I could've adhered to doh guidelines and bf to 6 months and then changed to formula.
Is this a silly rule? The amount of milk we get through, and the money I give to boots makes me feel like I am as entitled to receive points as much as anyone else for any other products.

The thing is, you don't points on stamps either. Someone who doesn't have internet and sends lots of letters could feel disadvantaged but that would be ridiculous. Similarly there are no points on prescription items. I don't think you can get cross about a loyalty scheme that isn't an entitlement. And of course it's the law.

Chocoholism · 29/05/2014 21:23

It's most definitely likely that it's my low self esteem but I did feel a bit judged the way she put it to me

*get points

FidelineandFumblin · 29/05/2014 21:26

I get very cross at that. My DD is adopted, I am never going to be able to feed her myself, why shouldn't I get points on what I am buying?

Annunziata You can't legislate for everything my DC are all extremely tall and have been wearing adult clothes since they were about 10 - meaning i've been paying VAT on their cothes since then. Nothing to be done about it

intheenddotcom · 29/05/2014 21:26

Why is that the law?

FidelineandFumblin · 29/05/2014 21:27

To encourage breastfeeding intheend

mindthegap79 · 29/05/2014 21:28

I've heard that stamps are legal tender. Get revenge on Boots by paying for your formula with a selection of stamps! If you really want to pass them off, use the unfranked ones which are still attached to envelopes.

FidelineandFumblin · 29/05/2014 21:31

Why all the hatred of Boots for following the law!? Confused

RevoltingPeasant · 29/05/2014 21:31

OP YABU as it is the law, but YANBU about the judgy way she spoke to you. I understand a MW or HV coming out with something like that as they are in a sense paid by the govt to promote BF.

Boots are a private co who are making money out of your feeding choices so she can naff off with her sanctimonious tone. A simple, "really sorry, it is against company policy" would be fine.

Viviennemary · 29/05/2014 21:32

I am pro breastfeeding but the law is wrong. Some people aren't able to breastfeed. I'm amazed they can get away with this.

kali110 · 29/05/2014 21:32

Not the assistants fault or boots fault. Theyre just following the law same as tesco etc

Andrewofgg · 29/05/2014 21:32

I've heard that stamps are legal tender.

Urban myth. Pity, because Boots are shit even when they are in the right as they are here.

mindthegap79 · 29/05/2014 21:33

I love Boots, especially Mini Mode baby clothes.

Annunziata · 29/05/2014 21:34

It is not really the same... You can promote breastfeeding to me till it's coming out of my ears, but I can't do it.

FidelineandFumblin · 29/05/2014 21:35

Errr I can't stunt my DC's growth either Smile

mindthegap79 · 29/05/2014 21:35

Really Andrewofgg?? That is a damn shame.

Andrewofgg · 29/05/2014 21:35

till it's coming out of my ears

Annunziata I'm not convinced that that's the phrase you want!

Annunziata · 29/05/2014 21:37

But VAT isn't cut off clothes to encourage you to buy them. It's to help you to buy them.

I can't be encouraged to breastfeed, so I should be helped to buy formula.

freezation · 29/05/2014 21:37

But what is the law allowing them to get away with?

Pumpkinpositive · 29/05/2014 21:38

Pumpkin they don't FEEL anything - they are just observing UK law by not applying any promotion (inc Advantage card points) to formula milk.

In which case sales lady should have said so and OP wouldn't be posting, or her thread would have a different heading.

Spurious guff about "we like to promote breast feeding" is the sales assistant's spin on the matter. Why not just tell the truth? Confused

VashtaNerada · 29/05/2014 21:39

What the fucking fuck? This is law???? YANBU for being pissed off (although it looks like it's not Boots themselves). This makes me so angry. Formula is not poison - for the many, many women who can't breastfeed it is used to keep your child alive. Angry

ohdearitshappeningtome · 29/05/2014 21:39

Yep it's the law, there's only minute difference between each of the brands as well!

If you notice postnatal wards don't advertise. Formula milk either!

FidelineandFumblin · 29/05/2014 21:40

I'll explain again Annunziata before they entered secondary school my DC were all in age 16 clothes and were wearing adult clothes shortly thereafter.

VAT is payable on adult clothes but not childrens clothes.

Children need clothes just as they need milk/food.

You had no choice. I had no choice. We both got stung. But laws can't be tailored to minority situations.

My children are all now 6'4 plus - that's a minority. Adopted children are also a minority.

FidelineandFumblin · 29/05/2014 21:42

Spurious guff about "we like to promote breast feeding" is the sales assistant's spin on the matter. Why not just tell the truth

She wouldn't be the first sales assistant not to have listened properly in training and then waffled to cover for it.

fairyfuckwings · 29/05/2014 21:43

Complete overreaction to the word "breastapo" in my opinion. Seriously, you've never heard that word before? And you're shocked and horrified and genuinely. believed it was being compared to the Holocaust?

My own gp used that word. And I laughed.
