to ask when the memo went out to say that no one eats sandwiches anymore

and that we all have such delicate constitutions that eating bread gives us an attack of the vapours and means we need a lie down.

I can only assume that it was on the same memo that said that we can only eat quinoa that we have knitted ourselves or organic home grown couscous.

I was also a bit surprised by the large number of sandwich avoiders - I mainly have sandwiches for lunch most days (when I'm not indulging in a Greggs sausage roll!).

Actually, left over roast chicken / turkey salad sandwich (inc mayo and cranberry sauce) with a glass of wine is prob one of my favourite quick dinners! (heads downstairs to see what I can make into a sandwich...)

Wickeddevil · 29/05/2014 19:32

It like a mini Japanese version of ikea. Full of shit stuff you somehow end up buying. There is one in Cambridge, but I can't find the loo brush on their website.

pandarific · 29/05/2014 19:33

I don't really know what you mean by diet myth, I was just pointing out that Atkins was the first major shift in the thinking around healthy eating in e.g. the 80s (refined grains, low fat good) and the thinking now, (refined grains + sugar bad because of insulin spikes, diabetes, increased fat storage, natural fats good).

Lots of low or reduced carb eating advice (many different forms) followed, and most are pretty well regarded afaik.

I'm not saying bread is eeevil, but just pointing out in response to OP's question that the memo has been circulating for some time now.

pandarific · 29/05/2014 19:35

That said, not a lot makes me happier than a hot chicken baguette (with coleslaw).

DoJo · 29/05/2014 19:38

It's almost as though some people eat sandwiches every day and some people don't and yet the world keeps turning. Surely this can't be?

Mrsjayy · 29/05/2014 19:39

Waitrose and sainsbury have a huge free from gluten range now so it seems to be a thing you can pay a nutritionist 100s of pounds to tell you you are allergic to glutten Hmm I know of afew people who are ALLERGIC and one person witn ceoliac disease the allergic people get a bit of bloat the ceoliac person can end up in hospital, sorry to bring the thread down and go off in a tangent but it gets on my nerves it is so faddy

kazzawazzawoo · 29/05/2014 19:39

I'd rather have the left over chicken with mayo and cranberry sauce without the bread. Wink

fascicle · 29/05/2014 19:39

YABU for expecting a memo. Do your own homework! YAABU for using a lame 'never did me any harm' style argument.

Kleptronic · 29/05/2014 19:40

I have never met a carb I didn't like.

Warm bread straight out of the breadmaker with lashings of butter = YUM!!!!!

I don't CARE if it's bad for me I won't give it up (runs off holding crusty loaf like Gollum with his precious).

I'm happy to do a Gluten free loaf for guests.

Minor irritant - nowhere in Wales seems to sell Teff, and I miss my Somali pancakes since leaving London. Anyone know a good source to get it online (Teff is gluten free.)

The NHS has reccied Quinoa for dairy intolerant toddlers for well over a decade now, which means it's sooo last year darlink & you really need to move on if you wanna keep up with dear Gywneth & co. The old gits in flat caps even grow rainbow quinoa up the allotments - sure sign it's time as a trend has been and gone.

flipchart · 29/05/2014 19:49

My nan used to give me sugar butties as a treat when I was a kid!

theeternalstudent · 29/05/2014 20:00

Hmmmmm, I do think that bread is over rated.
Now, a well fired morning roll (with a thick layer of butter and then crisps) does the job for me!

Pipbin · 29/05/2014 20:02

Sugar butties. White bread spread with butter then sprinkled with sugar, then shaken over the sugar bowl like a glitter picture. Love it.
And crisps in sandwiches.

Yes a very few people are allergic, some have an intolerance but I do get pissed off with people who have intolerances claiming that they are allergic.

I love the Mitchell and Webb sketch which says something to the effect of 'just tell her she's intolerant to wheat and she'll be so busy thinking about toast that she'll forget to be ill.

BankWadger · 29/05/2014 20:08

Sorry what? Give up bready goodness?

PrincessBabyCat · 29/05/2014 20:11

I rarely eat sandwiches. But I do eat a baguette in an of itself. Bread is delicious.

My lunch is almost always leftover dinner. Most people I know do the same thing. At my last office everyone ate left overs, my other job we went out for burgers or whatever food cart was near by.

elQuintoConyo · 29/05/2014 20:11

Don't tell my Bil, he frequently has 'leftover sandwiches' of fillings from the fridge: spaghetti bolognese sandwich, anyone?

And who can forget the wonder of a CRISP SANDWICH? (Shouts on purpose).

The Spanish have traditional potato tortilla sandwiches in most cafes and bars, too too tasty.

coraltoes · 29/05/2014 20:11

if you work and buy your lunch then you're looking at a Pret sandwich at over 500 calories vs a sushi/sashimi itsu dish at far less but tastier, or soup and a roll or a tasty salad from local bespoke made salad place, all healthier (edamame/salad/whatever), tastier and sandwiches are just dull unless they have nutella Grin

PrincessBabyCat · 29/05/2014 20:12

I have never met a carb I didn't like.

Can I get an amen? Grin

hellokittymania · 29/05/2014 20:13

I like sandwiches!....

thatstoast · 29/05/2014 20:14

A thread about a thread about bread?

I love bread (and rhyming!) Grin

Alconleigh · 29/05/2014 20:29

I am wheat intolerant. It's really not to be faddy. It's blimmin annoying. Bacon sandwiches are food of the gods and gluten free bread is just not the same. I don't claim to be allergic though, as I am not.

Pipbin · 29/05/2014 21:30

*I have never met a carb I didn't like.

Can I get an amen?*

Amen and hallelujah.
