Have any of you boycotted any shops or particular brands because you don't agree with some of there policies?

I often see on things like fb or twitter people saying this. For example people boycotting tesco due to the bad taste 'mental' patient Halloween costume.

I will be honest and say I've never even thought about boycotting somewhere.

When I first started on MN there was a thread saying how shxx tescos is and it hasn't improved by the sound of it Plomino that is incredible.

MacenroeTheBoatAshore · 29/05/2014 16:44

Im starting to think of boycotting Asda as theyre getting more and more self serve tills and less and less staff.

aslo they don't have staff on the proper tills till after 9am where other supermarkets do.

also M&S. I only go there once in a blue moon and they have the best nstrawberries, but they charge ludricously high prices and then tell you to buy a carrier bag for the privelage!

Gubbins · 29/05/2014 16:44

Lots. Starbucks, Amazon (I’m possibly the only person who browses books online and then goes and buy them for full price in my local independent bookshop.) Nestle, Tesco, a local butcher who made racist remarks, Israeli goods, Pets at Home (They sell Chinese hamsters as pairs although they are solitary and are very likely to start fighting once they’re a few weeks old.), Murdoch media... To name a few.

I know it won’t make a difference; Nestle are hardly going to notice that I won’t buy a peanut butter chunky kit kat even if though they sound amazing. But it’s important to me to know that my money is not going to support business practices I’m unhappy with. There are other businesses that I don't use because their goods are shoddy or service crap, but I don't 'boycott' them. I just don't use them.

Damnautocorrect · 29/05/2014 16:51

Oh and Clinique, Estée Lauder, l'octaine (or however you spell it!) amongst others as they started testing on animals to sell products in china.

Found a stopper from the new cooker in my one year olds mouth - the cooker was replaced and they fell out again .
Am waiting to hear from the technical dept for reassurances that the stopper problem has been sorted -12 mths later...
AVOID AEG ELECTROLUX ZANUSSI JOHNLEWIS cookers . They are one company and all use these crap dodgy stoppers .

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 29/05/2014 19:05

Sainsbury's - they've recently employed an ex-nurse I reported for assaulting a bed bound lady in her 90s (she was struck off).

ASDA - staff are really rude.

Anything from P&G - test on animals.

2 local shops - rude staff.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 29/05/2014 19:09

WHSmith the shithole did that to me. I had about £60 worth of stuff on the counter and they wanted money for a bag.

Er, no...

Left it all there and bought everything elsewhere. Haven't been back since. Cheeky feckers!!

Andrewofgg · 29/05/2014 19:10

The employers probably gave the ex-nurse a bland reference to void any risk of getting sued. Not Sainsburys' fault.

Tesco because they stole from me. They took my last tenner and then gave me change for a five and swore I couldn't haven given them a tenner. I had as I'd just been to the cash point outside. Made them check the til Nd it wasn't down so they said I was a liar.

I'm fairly sure someone must have had their hand in the til or something and was trying to cover up. I was a student at the time. I went home and cried because I had no more money. I wish I'd taken it further tbh but they all stood there and told me it wasn't possible they were wrong.

expatinscotland · 29/05/2014 19:44

I boycott a local shop that treated me like a liar.

Letitsnow9 · 29/05/2014 19:54

Our family- A pub which barred a customer as he had the cheek to go into a diabetic coma while there and united colours of Benetton

rubyflipper · 29/05/2014 20:08

I refuse to shop at a chain of shops in North London that sells Afro-Caribbean hair products. The staff only acknowledge you to either leer at you or to check you are not shoplifting.

Last time I went there, I dumped my goods on the counter and walked out.

deakymom · 29/05/2014 21:34

halifax they refused to allow me and oh to open an account with them for no reason they said it was "something" on our credit report we panicked thinking someone had swiped our identity (again) and paid out for credit reports there was nothing wrong we had good credit right up to the point where halifax credit checked us 5 times each in three days causing it to drop because it looked like we were applying for credit/cards/loans etc in a short space of time we only applied once and that was for a bank account with NO overdraft so we weren't even asking them for money they did most of the checks the following day after we had been refused the account i complained i was livid i got most of the money credit expert charged me back off them as an apology

i tried to boycott amazon but i won some vouchers from them and i could only spend them there!

deakymom · 29/05/2014 21:45

i actually congratulated tesco as being the only supermarket in 2013 that has not tried to kill/harm me or any of my children

morrisons sold me dodgy chicken nearly put me and the baby in hospital

asda sold us a dodgy car seat which fell apart literally three months after we bought it then they denied they sold it Hmm i did finally get a refund but it took me months then they lost the seat they were supposed to be testing so they gave me an extra £20 on a gift card and called it good

sainsbury sold me nappies that were woefully too small even though the size fours in other supermarkets were comfortable on him sainsburys were not they then told me i fed my son too much (really good customer services there sorry madam your baby is too fat) they finally agreed to exchange them for the next size up which cut him when he wore them so i dont buy nappies from there anymore! (plus there clothing is useless never buy black it washes out immediately and apparently they dont sell those trousers there (oh yes they flipping DO!)

candycoatedwaterdrops · 29/05/2014 21:48

Lush (grim smelly soap shop) for supporting a violent, extremist anti-Israel group.

londonrach · 29/05/2014 21:52

Whsmiths. I left loads of items on the counter with the bag policy too but the main reason wAs a horrible manager who didn't believe something was buy 1 get 1free. I showed him the shelf etc and he said its a mistake and lecture red me for 20 minutes on how the store was making money now compared to before (1980s1990s) when it had pretty pens. The reason it makes money is the vouchers you all get when you buy anything. After 20 minutes I needed chocolate (not from whsmiths) to recover...

londonrach · 29/05/2014 21:54

Tesco due to two terrible bouts of good poisoning. Took newly bought fish back there 5 mins after I bought it. The smell was awful they returned my money so quickly!

GoneGirlGone · 29/05/2014 22:00

Amazon for a myriad of reasons. I loathe them.

Avoid using Google, I'm not convinced by their apparent commitment to do no evil. And if I hear how super their working conditions are I will scream.

I make a point of buying Israeli produce for personal reasons.

DenzelWashington · 29/05/2014 22:02

Tesco. For decades. Because I refused to give the odious Shirley Porter (Tesco heiress) any of my money.

Barclays-due to operating in South Africa in apartheid days.

Brummiegirl15 · 29/05/2014 22:07

My Uncle has boycotted HP sauce as it is no longer made in Birmingham and has relocated to Netherlands.

My Uncle also worked for Rover at the Longbridge plant and we as a family have boycotted BMW & Mini due to this

Topaz25 · 29/05/2014 22:17

candycoatedwaterdrops That's interesting, I didn't know that about Lush, which group do they support? I have heard that they objectify female employees.

GoneGirlGone · 29/05/2014 22:23

Always found Lush particularly ethical in terms of their beliefs and how they treat team members.

ImaLooney · 29/05/2014 22:26

Can someone explain briefly the nestle boycott thing?
