Have any of you boycotted any shops or particular brands because you don't agree with some of there policies?

I often see on things like fb or twitter people saying this. For example people boycotting tesco due to the bad taste 'mental' patient Halloween costume.

I will be honest and say I've never even thought about boycotting somewhere.

Some of these are magnificently random. Some are very interesting.

I am trying not to use Amazon any more if it wasn't for my damn kindle! and waterstones do free delivery. Please tell me they pay tax?!

I also am trying to bank ethically. Have just started using the local credit union for a savings account.

Sam799 · 28/07/2014 00:29

Boycotting asda like a plague. Walmart and they refuse access to anyone with "free Palestine" top or verbal
Motto. Freedom of speech not available. Tesco because knowingly they continue to trade with Israel's illegal settlement areas of fruit produce. Loreal, soda stream Estée Lauder of course coke and brands. Nestlé and brands. Independent local shops have fresh local produce it's healthier better consumption and keeps our money in the UK other than taxes used to sell weapons of destruction to kill children. Not in my name.

Teddybeau1988 · 28/07/2014 00:34

DH is forbidden to go to any cafe that does not use free range eggs only. I always ask the origin of any eggs. DD1 has started flowing suit and asks too now (much to her grandparents embarrassment)

Sapat · 28/07/2014 02:23

I don't boycott anywhere but avoid shops and goods where I think the quality or service is poor. Avoided Curry's because once we bought 3 items and one broke, one was shit and one was never delivered (they sold it at the wrong price apparently so refused to honour). I only use Ryanair if I have no other alternative. They really treat customers badly, have tiny seats and the endless selling on board drives me crazy.
I avoid one pub where I forgot my hat. Called the next day, they said they had it, went back to retrieve it and they couldn't find it and didn't care. It was a lovely hat :(

BadLad · 28/07/2014 08:30

I feel much better about pirating software having read in this thread that a lot of it is developed in Israel.

Most of the other names mentioned on here are companies I like using, although I've never had to use Ryanair, thankfully.

MorphineDreams · 28/07/2014 08:50

I boycotted KFC for a good few years.

I now won't buy Bob Martin products because they test on animals. In fact I boycott a lot of products that do.

Andrewofgg · 28/07/2014 08:55

Well BadLad if you ever need a stent I hope it's genuine and not a pirate . . .

MorphineDreams · 28/07/2014 08:55

Oh and I'm now boycotting a Chinese buffet in southport because of the shockingly bad service, and the fact they charged us £1.95 because my 10 month old god daughter had a prawn cracker.

mumtoateen · 28/07/2014 09:55

Boycott Tesco, Lidl, Aldi due to the horse meat scandal

mumtoateen · 28/07/2014 09:59

Think everyone avoiding anything from Israel is stupid tbh. The sellers aren't doing any harm it's the government. Besides, what about Hamas killing Isrealis?

Squidstirfry · 28/07/2014 10:41

Boycotting Isreali goods is one of the few ways to get the message to the government, though Mumtoateen.

Squidstirfry · 28/07/2014 10:42

Also, about three civilian Israeli's have been killed by Hamas, compared to hundreds vice-versa.

Numanoid · 28/07/2014 10:44

Sam799 That's shocking, won't be going to Asda anymore. At least, not until that stupid rule is changed.

cleanasawhistle · 28/07/2014 12:28

I was working in a cafe,we ran out of teacakes.
My boss asked me to go buy some.
I could have gone to the supermarket but I always tried to use the small local shops. So I picked up 4x6 packs of teacakes and walked to the till.
The owner said very snottily " are you going to take all my teacakes".
I replied "well they were on the shelves so I thought they were for sale"
She tutted and served me.
If I hadn't of been in a hurry to get back to work then I would have told her where to stick them.
I have never been back.

slug · 28/07/2014 12:45

Murdoch and anything in his empire. No SKY in the slug household.

Andrewofgg · 28/07/2014 13:45

It's only a boycott if you would want it. Otherwise it's just consumer choice. I buy the newspaper which I like because I like it. That's not a boycott of the others.

pukkabo · 28/07/2014 14:20

My DF has boycotted Nestle, Mcdonalds, coca cola and Nike for years. It was always a bone of contention between us when I was a child wanting milky buttons or the latest Nike trainers and he point blank refused.

My best friend told me he boycotts Israel. We were in the supermarket together and he picked up an avocado, I pointed out that it's Israeli and he said "oh, it's not actually Israel I boycott- just Zionism" Hmm. He won't do Starbucks anymore, he claims he's boycotted Mcdonalds but freely admits to getting breakfast there sometimes after work!

I would say I 'boycott' the DM and sun but I've just never read or bought any paper other than the independent or guardian so not really a boycott. I don't eat fast food or drink fizzy drinks so those companies aren't bought into. I do avoid Nestle like most people. I've always said though that if you want to live 100% ethically you'd have to live on a self sufficient farm with a watermill and solar panels and weave your clothes out of lentils. Evil is everywhere in a capitalist world I'm afraid.

Iownathreeinchferrari · 28/07/2014 17:14

Warranty direct because they are weasels and avoided fulfilling their responsibility. Thank goodness we weren't elderly or vulnerable and had a spare year to fight our corner.

chiliplant · 19/10/2014 16:56

Yay for lush!!!!!!

Carrierpenguin · 19/10/2014 17:05

I boycott nestle, Aldi and lidl due to ethics.

I support co-op and waitrose

PhaedraIsMyName · 19/10/2014 17:09

Tesco and anything in the Murdoch empire. The latter is academic as I don't want Sky and never have read any of the Murdoch papers.

EBearhug · 19/10/2014 17:15

My mother boycotted a local family store because the owner was having another affair quite openly. I don't think it was the affair per se - these things do happen - but the flaunting of it.

I suspect they never noticed.

ProfYaffle · 19/10/2014 17:18

I haven't been in a local pub for over a decade. Back when I was vegetarian they served me a starter with bacon on it, I politely asked for it to be replaced with the vegetarian version described on the menu. The landlord then spent about 20 minutes shouting at us while the rest of the pub fell silent. I was literally shaking at the end of it. Never been back (surprisingly!)
