Have any of you boycotted any shops or particular brands because you don't agree with some of there policies?

I often see on things like fb or twitter people saying this. For example people boycotting tesco due to the bad taste 'mental' patient Halloween costume.

I will be honest and say I've never even thought about boycotting somewhere.

Nestlé
Cosmetics companies which test on animals, too many to list.
Cleaning fluids which are tested on animals, see above.
Products from Saudi (nigh on impossible, but we try)
Teva pharmaceuticals. For no other reason than that I have had problems with them in the past and don't want to take the risk again.

mizu · 04/06/2014 10:06

Do not shop in Tesco, that is about it.

CrayolaCocaColaRocknRolla · 04/06/2014 10:11

I've never boycotted anything... I know most companies are twats but still, I've never seen the point. Never done anything to me...

roamer2 · 04/06/2014 10:14

Nestle

I'm trying to avoid milk and beef products that might have come from the badger cull areas (W Somerset, Gloucestershire)

ppeatfruit · 04/06/2014 11:02

We have NEVER bought the Sun because dh works in the press and knew they were shxx many many years ago.

ppeatfruit · 04/06/2014 11:03

The Sun should go the way Of the News of the World IMO

KareninsGirl · 04/06/2014 11:21

Co-op, for being ridiculously anti Israel.
Lush, for being ridiculously anti-Israel.
Pink floyd, for being ridiculously anti-Israel.

Considering Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, which protects Christians, those from the lgbt community, allows all religions to practice without fear or oppression, has Palestinians in their parliament, as judges and who have equal rights to study in schools and universities, treats patients from all religions (and Palestinians) in their hospitals, is a huge fore runner in life saving drugs and research etc etc...I can only imagine those boycotting Israel are woefully uninformed, sucked in by the media portrayal of Israel, or ant Semitic.

In fact, the founder of the BDS actually gained his degree in tel aviv university!

Go figure!

Theodorous · 04/06/2014 14:34

Or maybe they are Palestinian.

Shakshuka · 04/06/2014 14:49

Funny how the people so concerned and upset by Israel's conflict with the Palestinian aren't bothered at all by how the Palestinians are treated in Lebanon (well, because the Lebanese are not nasty Israelis). There really is an apartheid system there, but that's OK, because that's just arabs being mean to other arabs, right?

Why no boycott of Lebanon?

Theodorous · 04/06/2014 14:52

I am anti Isreal based on the vast number of elderly refugees I have known over the years. People who didn't even get time to put their coat on as they were dragged out. Rather than relying on Google, I base my opinions on experience.

Shakshuka · 04/06/2014 15:03

If that's the case, Theodorus, I guess you're anti Russia and anti Polish (plus a whole bunch of other countries) for all the millions of ethnic Germans who were expelled from their homes during WW2 at the same time.

And more recently the expulsions of Georgians from Abkhazia and South Osseia by Russia.

And you must be anti Turkish and anti Greek for the huge population expulsions which occurred (plus what they did int he 1970s in Cyprus).

And anti India/Pakistan/Bangladesh for the same reasons.

And I do hope that you're anti Kuwait for having expelled Palestinians following the gulf war.

And anti Burmese for expelling Rohingya Muslims.

And of course anti Lebanese for applying apartheid to the Palestinians living there.

Theodorous · 04/06/2014 15:12

No I apply my moral outrage to things I understand. Great Googling by the way.

Or general knowledge and interest.

I think most of us know (or should know) that millions of ethnic Germans were expelled from Eastern Europe and former German territories following WW2. But that's OK, right?

And I don't think you understand the Israel-Palestinian conflict as well as you think you do since you clearly haven't made an effort to understand the other side.

Double standards and hypocrisy, imo.

Shakshuka Flowers Flowers

And Theo that is possibly the most patronising comment I have read, even on Mumsnet. Just because you don't understand the wider issues, it doesn't mean that Shak doesn't.

(which I suspect is motivated from other, perhaps less salubrious, reasons)

Yes that always worries me tooShak I know I know I know that anti Zionism doesn't necessarily equal anti Semitism but those who claim just to take issue with Israel rather than Jewish people need to be VERY wary of not farting down the same wind tunnel as the anti-semites....and they also need to be very clear that they are not being selective in their 'moral outrage'

weneedtotalkaboutshriver · 04/06/2014 15:23

That is a very fair point Kate

Theodorous · 04/06/2014 15:24

shakshuka I advise you to think very carefully before making any further reference to my reasons for boycotting Israel because if there is a suggestion that I am anti Semitic I will take it further.

Shakshuka · 04/06/2014 15:26

That's true corus

I mean, of course Israel isn't behaving the way that, for example, Rwanda behaves in DRC (more like how the US and the UK behaved during their occupation of Iraq). That would clearly be outrageous and beyond the pale. And Israel should indeed be criticized, no doubt.

But there are definitely double standards and hypocrisy, especially in Europe and the Arab world.

JanineStHubbins · 04/06/2014 15:26

I avoid Israeli products because there is no policy of labelling products made in illegal settlements in the West Bank. If there were, I would boycott settlement products, and happily buy Israeli goods.

Shakshuka · 04/06/2014 15:29

Theodorus

I have my own thoughts about what motivates anti-Israel behavior in the face of moral apathy about other things which happen in the world.

But if you say it's because you don't understand any other problems or human rights issues in the world rather than anti semitism, that's fine, I believe you. I agree that lack of understanding of other global issues could also be a reason.

Theodorous · 04/06/2014 15:31

I am not prepared to discuss this further. I have reported your post and hope that you can see how completely inappropriate it is to make such suggestions.

Shakshuka · 04/06/2014 15:37

Theodorus

I think you jumped to the conclusion that I may be referring to anti-semitism.

I just said that anti-Israel stances are often motivated by reasons other than moral outrage which I completely stand by. You drew your own conclusions as to what those reasosn could be.

Hmm

The fact that earlier on in one of your posts you opened it up by saying that you don't hate Israeli people was quite telling. Why on earth would someone hate Israeli PEOPLE? It would have never have occurred to me to write something like that.

Theodorous · 04/06/2014 15:39

Don't backtrack, your post is clear. Just leave me alone please.

Shakshuka · 04/06/2014 15:44

For clarity, here's what I wrote (since I know that mumsnet has a very quick hand with post deletion rather than actually looking at the content).

But I do hope that you apply your moral outrage equally across the world rather than just hatred of Israel (which I suspect is motivated from other, perhaps less salubrious, reasons)

You decided it was anti-semitism but I appreciate though your point that your selective moral outrage is actually a lack of understanding of global issues.
