Changing DD s name

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 22:57

Has anyone ever done this?

Dd is 6 weeks. Her name is nice but unfortunately it's a brand name of something. We decided early on in the pregnancy on this name as a possibility and decided to use it - I think because it "became" our dd we didn't think of the product.

But, other people do and whenever I say DDs name they say "oh like the ..."

WIBU to change it? DH thinks I'm being stupid but I'm worried about the poor child going through life constantly saying "yes, like the ...."

Is it Flora??

I can understand the annoyance. It would do my head in to have people say that every time her name was mentioned. Depends how much you love the name though?

She's only tiny so changing it wouldn't have any negative effects.

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 23:00

Yes!!

Hehe good guess Smile.

I have to admit I'm not overly keen and the horrible spread is a contributing factor.

Have you an alternative lined up?

ICanSeeTheSun · 28/05/2014 23:02

At 6 weeks old I would.

She doesn't know her name yet and it will be easier for other people to get used to the name.

littlegreengloworm · 28/05/2014 23:03

I can't believe people re so mean to comment but certainly change it if you want to

Florence ?

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 23:04

Well, the alternatives were Emily, Harriet or Poppy (my favourite but sounds a wee bit silly with our surname)

I do love her name and it makes me think of meadows in summer filled with wildflowers :) but everyone else thinks of margarine! Angry

My friend has a baby with the same name, and I think it's lovely. You could just perfect a withering stare for anyone who makes the marg reference. Fwiw, we have a similar issue with our surname and while it's mildly annoying, it's not exactly life-altering.

thegreylady · 28/05/2014 23:04

You could change it to Florence or Laura. I would, my middle name is Robina and when people found out I got so many Ribena jokes and its not even the same word.

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 23:04

I'm not as keen on Florence - I think "nightingale" and also there are a fair few Florence's belonging to other people!

CoffeeTea103 · 28/05/2014 23:05

I think it's early enough to change it. Most people wouldn't have had the time to get used to it already.

Cric · 28/05/2014 23:05

I think it is a beautiful name.

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 23:06

Me too cric Sad

Stupid margarine!!

OP posts:
Snoozybird · 28/05/2014 23:08

How about Florrie as a variation?

Canthisonebeused · 28/05/2014 23:09

Do to change it

Canthisonebeused · 28/05/2014 23:09

Don't change it!!!

EyelinerQueen · 28/05/2014 23:10

Aw it sounds as though you really love it Sad.

I guess it comes down to if that love for the name can override the annoyance felt when people inevitably comment?

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 23:10

Well yes but that would just be a nickname - her name is still Flora.

When I write it, or say it, I just see meadows filled with wild flowers in early summer, or old fashioned chintzy style wallpaper or dresses. To me it's just flowers and I love flower names anyway.

But the bloody spread!!! Grin and I don't DARE buy any!

OP posts:
Beardlover · 28/05/2014 23:11

It's a stunning name. Your others aren't quite as beautiful. There's always Fleur

I think you should choose the name your happiest with and forget brand names. Only a few will think of marg

whynowblowwind · 28/05/2014 23:12

My first name is one that is frequently mistaken for another one and that drives me mad especially as DH has the same problem.

Then we have a stupid surname thanks DH

Poppy was my first choice but it does sound a bit stupid with our surname.

I think I DO really love it, and it suits her as she wears pastels and florals :)

Cric · 28/05/2014 23:13

When we named our daughter a few people said it would remind people of a cartoon character but I think that everyone has something about their first or last name that someone will find something to pass comment on so if you change it there will always be something!! You love and your husbands does (and I do) :)

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/05/2014 23:14

I think Flora is a fab name. Announce it with pride. Grin

MonstersBalls · 28/05/2014 23:15

You could spell it the Irish way - Floragh but tbh I wouldn't change it.

I know a Flora and I still think of summer meadows rather than margarine. It's only because people are anxious to get the name right straight away. You'll get fewer comments as she gets older and grows into her name.

Mynewone · 28/05/2014 23:16

If you didn't like the name I would say change it but it sounds like you love it so I would keep it. Fwiw I think its lovely

wheresthelight · 28/05/2014 23:16

awww i like the name Flora! and to be honest reading the posts it took a few seconds to get the link (in my defence i am allergic to dairy products so only buy vitalite) but i think anyone who actually comments on the brand name is a bit of a twit!

if you like the name and it conjurers up the pictures you mention then i wouldn't change it as you stand the potential to always be resentful

HavannaSlife · 28/05/2014 23:17

Do what my dsis did and say no like flora while giving a withering look.

Although dns name isn't flora
