I have my 15mo twins chocolate brownies in pizza express this evening. They went to bed fine but have been up since 10.30 fucking booloo hyper. Have had nurofen and just now cal pol. I have given up and come downstairs with them as they're just laughing at me. Plus I have house guests - who have been kept awake for the past 3 hours by bonkers 1 year olds high on sugar.

I am a fucking dickhead. What time will they crash? It's like watching someone high on cocaince...

Why are you giving them paracetemol and nurofen? Are they ill? Confused

AdeleNazeem · 27/05/2014 02:03

i thought the op meant s/he had the nurofen & calpol herself as they were giving her a headache being hyper or did I musunderstand?

thornrose · 27/05/2014 02:09

Nut often and cal pol won't help Confused

thornrose · 27/05/2014 02:11

Stupid auto correct, Nurofen and calpol.

FreeButtonBee · 27/05/2014 02:11

Well, when they first woke, I thought it was teeth (isn't it always?!)as they did screech and cry like banshees and DTS has been exceedingly grumpy for the past two days. but then that didn't work. And they just got more and more crazy. And I forgot about the brownies until after I panic dosed them with calpol in the vain hope that would work, when 3 hours of patting, shushing, ewan the dream sheep, singing and leaving them to it didn't do the job...

I will need the nurofen soon myself as all this was preceded by a 2.5 hour conference call and they are still shouting and tipping Lego over the floor.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2014 02:11

Nut often might help...

Bogeyface · 27/05/2014 02:11

Hands up anyone who hasnt given an odd dose of calpol in desperation!

No its not a great thing to do but we all make mistakes, the OPs being she shouldnt have bothered with the Nurofen as it doesnt work. Shame they discontinued Medised, that stuff was amazing!

OP, watch for the crash as they will get very teary and will be starving when they wake up. Give them wholemeal breakfast stuff, porridge or wholemeal toast would be best, no sugar jam or honey.

trufflesnout · 27/05/2014 02:11

Mm Nut-often, my favourite. I thought the sugar high thing was disproven? Or debunked? Or being thought about being debunked? Or something?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2014 02:15

Supposedly sugar has been proved in tests not to affect moods like parents think it does. However, a brownie would also have chocolate, which has caffeine...

FreeButtonBee · 27/05/2014 02:15

Yes, yes, I know I am a terrible parent for being trigger happy with the medicine but sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a pain in the ass baby and something niggling them. Often, a dose of nurofen knocks them out cold in 20 mins so it was worth a try. I only connected the dots after wracking my brain as to why they were just NOT sleepy and getting so annoyed at being in their cots. V unusual for them.

Anyway, still awake. Obviously the drugs don't work...

OP posts:
Bogeyface · 27/05/2014 02:17

truffle officially it was debunked, unofficially you have parents saying "But the doctor said it couldnt be the sugar!!!" as the Junior is being coaxed off the roof.

Its different to each person. I dont particularly like sweet things but can tolerate them (physically I mean), no real issues. My sister has a real sweet tooth but cant deal with sugar at all. She gets nasty (she thinks she is funny) when she has it, and is utterly vile when she is crashing. Think of a bad drunk who cant handle his beer, that is my sister on sugar.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/05/2014 02:18

They just make you worse

FreeButtonBee · 27/05/2014 02:20

Indeed, MrsTP, indeed.

OP posts:
Bogeyface · 27/05/2014 02:23

Op, what time did they have the brownies?

It seems to be a very late reaction, and quite a long one too. When I have been through the hell that is the sugar rush, it hits quite quickly (same with caffeine [me not them]) and doesnt last 3 hours.

I wonder if it is their teeth but the sugar in their system stopped them going back to sleep. Either issue on its own would have been manageable but perhaps both together is too much for them.

FreeButtonBee · 27/05/2014 02:27

Hmm, it was 5.30. Small bit of milk at 6.30. Bed at 7.30. DTD asleep by 8 DTS thrashed about til 8.30 (not unusual) woke at 10.30. Awake ever since - got dozy but never actually shut their eyes for longer than 10 seconds. Running run like things possessed.

Could be for him - he has canines brewing and I think she got disturbed by him and is now just past sleep. Nothing like twins for winding each other up. She has 16 teeth so I can't think that her back molars are due yet.

And we have cured them of co-sleeping. They sleep only in their cots until mortally ill. I have resigned myself to no sleep now. Might be better to push through.

My nanny is going to love me tomorrow...

Caffeine in large serving of brownies would keep me awake for hours, sigh, some of us are just stupidly oversensitive.

Bogeyface · 27/05/2014 02:45

Holiday I cant have caffeine at all and I dont react to brownies, are you sure it is the caffeine doing that to you and not the sugar? The brownie recipe I use is 1 part flour to 4 parts sugar, thats how they are so gooey.

Bogeyface · 27/05/2014 02:46

OP it sounds like insomnia. I have been known to get manic with lack of sleep.

You know when old ladies say "Oh he is too tired to sleep!", this is what they mean. Something strange happens to my brain and I get more wide awake the more tired I am. I think that pushing through is the best thing, but they must keep to their normal schedule tomorrow otherwise it will be the same tomorrow night.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 27/05/2014 02:49

Would tv help them sleep? Or music, soft calming music? Try youtube, switch the lights off, cuddle into bed with them and put a mellow type cartoon or music on. Maybe some warm milk?

HolidayCriminal · 27/05/2014 02:53

um, yes, I know I'm sensitive to caffeine.
I get the shakes after I have a cup of tea.
Caffeine used to give my grandfather tunnel vision.
Big cake made without cocoa probably won't affect sleep (big meal near bedtime would normally, anyway, though).
Big cake made with cocoa I may as well give up on sleeping until 4-5am.

Bogeyface · 27/05/2014 03:04

Holiday you win! I can have 1 cup of tea but thats it. I get the shakes after two, and I am the most sensitive person I know who doesnt have an allergy. I hate the fact that you cant get caffeine free drinks in pubs, so I cant have anything 'n coke. JD n C doesnt really work without the C!

MooseBeTimeForSpring · 27/05/2014 04:00

bogeyface one part flour to four parts sugar? My teeth are trying to retract behind my eyeballs just reading that, never mind eating it!!

golemmings · 27/05/2014 06:38

Ds did it on saturday night.. we were staying in hotel and all 4 of us shared a room. Ds (2.6) woke at 1. At 2 dh took him for a drive. At 5 ds fell asleep and woke up at quarter to 6.

he napped for about 10 mins during the day and fell asleep at 6 in the middle of tea. Apart from waking for a wee at 4, he slept 12 hours. Hang in there op!

FreeButtonBee · 27/05/2014 09:40

Finally went to sleep at 3am. I had to do full bedtime routine again of milk, stories etc. DD fell asleep fairly quickly. He took half an hour.

DD woke again at 5 but thankfully briefly.

I had to be up at 6.30.

I should have known! I am like a small child myself with caffeine and can't have a coke after 6pm or I won't sleep.

They are okay today - slept until 7.45.

Little tinkers. Lesson learnt people. No chocolate for small children. Or if you are feeling sleepy, eat some PE chocolate brownies.

I gave my 21 month niece ice cream not long before bedtime while staying with them. My two are older and I'd forgotten the effect of sugar on a wee one. It took about an hour or so to settle her. She normally goes down at 7pm on the dot. Just as well SIL luffs me. I had an extra large glass of chilled white for her when she came through.
