to wonder why people vote Labour, Tory or Lib Dem?

Lots of threads on here asking why people voted UKIP. I didn't vote because I think all the parties are rubbish and none of them represent what I believe in but I would like to ask people who voted Labour, Tory or Lib Dem why they voted the way they did, whether it was policies and if so what specific policies of the Lab/Tory/Lib Dem party appeal over other parties and if it wasn't for policies then why? Thank you.

I voted Green.

So none of the above applies.

HTH.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/05/2014 18:26

Goodness knows. They are all a shower of white. I always vote, couldn't this time. UKIP are the worst as far as I am concerned but the rest are dreadful too. The Lib Dems used to be OK but they got into bed with the Tories so they are out. Tories are self centred, misogynist twunts. Labour want ID cards and went into Iraq.

What a shit show.

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/05/2014 18:30

I voted Green in the European elections, as the best of a bad lot.

In General Elections , would always vote Labour, as their policies are nearest to my views generally.

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/05/2014 18:32

Apart from the Iraq fiasco, obviously.

michaelatipton · 26/05/2014 18:36

Bettercallsaul1 - I'm curious as to what specific policies you like about Labour that would make you vote for them in a GE?

Btw, I put Greens in my original question because I'm curious as to why people still vote for the 3 main parties.

Sorry I meant to say I didn't put Greens in my original question because I'm curious as to why people still vote for the 3 main parties.

Lib Dem

Cos they're the only party who want to be in Europe

Even though the leader is a right wing arse and Charlie 'pint' Kennedy was much better

JockTamsonsBairns · 26/05/2014 18:41

Labour. Always have been, always will be, a dyed in the wool Labour voter.

OverAndAbove · 26/05/2014 18:42

I voted Labour because it's clear to me that their policies best fit the kind of future I would hope to see in this country. I think that's pretty much what most people have in mind when voting, whoever they vote for (unless they are doing some misguided protest thing perhaps?)

I and my family (and I guess, most of my friends) would probably be much better off financially under the Tories, but it's not about that really - and in any case I'd rather poke my eye out with a stick than vote conservative.

TucsonGirl · 26/05/2014 18:42

Why would you vote for one party regardless of what they do?

MaidOfStars · 26/05/2014 18:42

I voted LibDem (as I generally do in European/local elections). My personal viewpoints have always closely aligned with LibDem; however, I will never vote for them in a GE again. I feel that European/local elections are far more about the person than the party though, so not too put off at voting for LibDem. It was either them or Green, and I happened to like the LibDem candidate's CV a little more.

BMW6 · 26/05/2014 18:51

I have voted for each of these at different GE's, depending on the Country's situation at the time and how each party proposed to move forward if they won.

Looking back, I have voted Conservative when times were hard (because I believe that they are better at dealing with Recession) and Labour when times are good (to redistribute the Wealth). I remember voting Liberal many many years ago, but can't remember why.

I find it odd and somewhat worrying that a person would vote for a particular Party no matter what, TBH.

The big 3 have changed dramatically over the thirty odd years that I have voted - as they have changed, lurching left, right, and back again, so has my vote.

HercShipwright · 26/05/2014 18:51

maid but in the Euro elections you aren't necessarily voting for one candidate. Ok, for the lib Dems you were voting for nobody, this time round, practically everywhere, it was essentially a UKIP vote - but ordinarily, you are voting for the slate. Because, under the voting system, the more votes a party gets the more likely their second and even third choice candidates are to get in. The Euro elections are one election where you are voting for the party - even, the voting block they will join, rather than the individual. MEPs don't deal with constituency issues etc.

Bettercallsaul1 · 26/05/2014 19:02

OP, I have never voted for any other party than Labour because, apart from terrible mistakes like Iraq, it is still the party of social progress, equality and welfare. The Conservatives are the party of the rich, ruling for the rich and the present lot do not even bother to try to hide it, with their bedroom tax and withdrawal of benefits for our poorest citizens.

Even at its most lack-lustre, Labour's general principles are at the other end of the spectrum from the Conservatives' and therefore I will remain loyal despite intermittent bouts of annoyance (or, in the case of Iraq, fury).

michaelatipton · 26/05/2014 19:05

Please can you list the specific policies if you are voting for a party because of its policies.

dreamingofsun · 26/05/2014 19:06

i voted tory because i think they make the best job of managing our economy which is obviously good news for everyone and i also believe everyone should work, if they are physically able, and object to paying tax for people who cannot be bothered

LaurieFairyCake · 26/05/2014 19:09

Lib dem - stuff we've actually achieved in govt over Tory resistance

Raising the threshold of tax to take thousands out of poverty(saves average family hundreds - more than other parties)

Increase funding for early years education - free hot meal for every kid

In Europe - end of roaming charges - lib dems enacted this - Tories and Ukip voted against it

LaurieFairyCake · 26/05/2014 19:09

The free hot meal for every kid starts in September

Because of the lib dems

JustGrrrrrreat · 26/05/2014 19:12

Apparently I come across as a labour voter. However I am not. I just cant bring myself to support a party that saw and backed Blairs ego trip at the expense of this country and of lives around the world.

I can see why others feel that way about the Tories. But I am lucky that all I can remember of that era is that we had women in charge. I was too young to know anything about policies.

I shoukd vote for the Lib Dems really but I veiw it as a bit of a nothing vote. And I also find them somewhat unrealistic with their policy as they have never needed to put our money where their mouth is.

I dont vote UKIP because I am not a racist, sexist homophobic idiot.

I guess I vote Tory by default. I would really really rather a better option though. Some of the Cabinet leave a lot to be desired.

EverythingsDozy · 26/05/2014 19:16

I voted green in the European election and LD in the local because I only had a choice of labour, Tory or LD and only voted for them because I said to my daughter "who should we pick: 1,2 or 3?" And she said "3, because I am 3".

WickedWitchoftheNorthWest · 26/05/2014 19:16

I voted Labour by default as I despise them slightly less than any of the other parties. So depressing but there is no decent party to vote for, and I have to vote if only to vote against nasty UKIP.

MelanieCheeks · 26/05/2014 19:22

If I lived somewhere that Labour were standing I'd vote for them, because I regard myself as a socialist.

I believe that the less well off in society should be helped by those who are able to. I don't think that just cos I happen to have been born in a particular gepgraphical location automatically makes me a better or more deserving human being than someone born 100 miles away.

I think that a stong European Union is our best way of avoiding the horrors of a World War, and that the ability to work in any of teh countires of the EU is essentially a good thing.

WickedWitchoftheNorthWest · 26/05/2014 19:23

Very well said, MelanieCheeks.

TucsonGirl · 26/05/2014 19:27

I don't see how anyone can still believe that Labour stand for equality when the gap between rich and poor widened so much under their last government. Yes, they are the party of welfare, but is that a good thing? Most people think the £26,000 cap on benefits and the "bedroom tax" are good things.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/05/2014 19:30

I'm not overly happy with labour but I voted for them as I feel they are the best of a bad bunch. I could never not vote and I feel pretty upset at the poor turnout.
