Because if Labour don't speak out or formulate anything sensible then the vacuum for the far right grows and look what happens...

I dearly wish they would stop cowering, quivering, vacillating, hovering uncertainly in the middle of the road, wobbling, wibbling and wavering.

I expect they'll now start wetly making noises about immigrations and referendums, pandering to the ukip voters rather than having the guts to argue that immigration and Europe are not the biggest problems we face.

Labour is supposed to be the party of the working people, the majority of us. I am so disgusted with them for missing an open goal and I'm terrified of a Tory/UKIP coalition. A year to go! Some guts please Labour! Some policies! Some swagger!

*Miliband

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 12:51

It's a huge Labour failure when they are the official opposition to this vile government and yet two thirds of voters can't be arsed, Labour can only just scrape ahead of the Tories, and the protest vote goes to a party of the far right.
No amount if spinning the results will alter the fact that there is zero enthusiasm for whatever it is Labour can't quite bring themsves to definitely say they believe in of are offering, and that's why they are leaving us all cold.

I was amazed when Miliband became leader. And very disappointed. I don't know, he just seems so Tory.
I think I'd like to see Andy Burnham as leader. He's likeable.

Viviennemary · 26/05/2014 12:53

I only realised a few days ago Miliband had one 'l'. But I still keep spelling it with two. I'm obviously far too thick to vote. Grin

funnyossity · 26/05/2014 12:54

Yes he's intelligent in some ways Sunny but he made the daft mistake of saying he was more intellectually self-confident than Cameron.

I dimly remember Harold Wilson, who seemed like he could be a slightly grumpy uncle of mine - it turns out he had been one of the youngest ever Oxford dons.

longfingernails · 26/05/2014 12:59

Clever people know how much there is they don't know. Thick people think they know everything. Both types usually make bad leaders.

happybubblebrain · 26/05/2014 13:01

I like Miliband (I spelt it correctly so I can vote). I think he seems like a nice genuine person. Charm and charisma shouldn't be what people vote for, they're usually fake - all smiles and then stab you in the back. People are so easily fooled.

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 13:18

I like Miliband too. I just wish he'd inspire me again as he very briefly did when he won the leadership.

longfingernails · 26/05/2014 13:25

To win the next election Miliband needs to get swing voters to swing. I don't think he has what it takes to do it, even with the 'free' betrayed soft-left Lib Dem voters he picks up by default.

Mrsjayy · 26/05/2014 13:25

I think if you shook ed he would cry he ia feeble has no policies and says hard working families too much they are a disgrace

Nancy66 · 26/05/2014 13:29

they need to do badly at the next election to get rid of current leadership and sort themselves out

TheABC · 26/05/2014 13:34

YABU. It's not just labour. The whole bloody lot of them need a shake!

SnowinBerlin · 26/05/2014 13:40

OK, so he's revealed policies so far on renting rights, energy bills, rail fares, tax rates and cracking down on payday lenders (and probably other stuff). I appreciate that we're a year away from the election and no one has a manifesto out yet, but so say there are no Labour policies is ridiculous. Maybe they aren't getting it across enough to the general public but the reaction from the opposition to the tenants rights and energy bill caps has been quite vocal. Hence the 'Red Ed' tag. [hmmm]

I still think that Miliband is the only one talking about big problems like basic tenants' rights and security of tenure - a huge issue that seems to be completely unappreciated by the other parties, as well as looking at the abuse of zero-hours contracts for example. Basic but important employment issues.

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 13:42

Yes snow, these policies give tiny tantalising hints that there may be a pulse. But they are timid to say the least.

OP posts:
thebodylovesspring · 26/05/2014 13:44

Absolutely agree.

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 13:44

For example: rent control and rail renationalisation would be moves that could actually solve the problem

Princessdeb · 26/05/2014 13:46

The only upside to these elections for me was the wiping out of the BNP. I voted labour in the euro elections as for me they were the least worst which is an appalling reason to vote. I am actually furious with all the main parties cons, LD's and labour for not having the huts to stand up and challenge UKIP properly. They were cowardly about challenging them on immigration and missed the huge goal available in the weakness of their policies. They are advocating a flat tax, how many people would be happy to pay the same tax rate as a millionaire?! UKIP are a weak party with weak policies and even weaker leadership. We need the main stream party leaders whoever they are to grow a pair and challenge them.

Oodlives · 26/05/2014 13:52

They just aren't out there shouting like UKIP. They've got the easiest policies to argue against and use against the Tories but nothing is coming.

curiousuze · 26/05/2014 13:55

The main parties need to wake up and realise that people are looking for someone else to vote - someone who even vaguely represents the average person, not just middle class Londoners. No one represents the working classes or lower middle any more. I am deeply uncomfortable with the threads on here dismissing all UKIP voters as idiots; there is something else going on here. I feel completely patronised by these Oxbridge educated white men with their mealy mouthed answers to simple questions, the spin and the bullshit.

I voted labour in the last election and will vote labour again because Stella Creasy is my MP and I think she's great. But I honestly think Ed Miliband is unelectable.

GarlicMayonnaise · 26/05/2014 13:57

YANBU! Neither are YBU about the fact they've tentatively floated some really constructive policies, but completely failed to back them up with strong argument or even bloody promote them. I'm beyond exasperated!

I joined Left Unity in hopes of a real alternative - I'm not wildly impressed by my fellow members, though, I'm sorry to say.

Can we resurrect Tony Benn? Grin

GarlicMayonnaise · 26/05/2014 14:00

Hilarious that so many voted UKIP because they're fed up of being ruled by public-school chaps who worked in the City. Like Nigel Farage.

Springheeled · 26/05/2014 14:00

Hm Garlic I tried people's assembly- fine, but.... I'd like an English Syriza

OP posts:
SnowinBerlin · 26/05/2014 14:04

Yep, when people say politicians are all the same, you can point out MPs like Creasy who has worked tirelessly on the loan shark issue, and had a real impact.

thebodylovesspring · 26/05/2014 14:10

Mmmm dismissing anyone who votes for UKIP is as stupid and vote loosing as the ridiculous Gordon Brown calling that elderly lady a racist. That damaged him massively.

To get elected you need to listen to people. Not lecture them or tell them how they should feel but listen.

I don't think for one minute that millions of people will vote UKIP in a general election. They are slapping the main parties in the face, now labour must listen.

Miliband is weak and unelectable in my view. Ed balls is hateful. I too prefer Andy Burnham.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 26/05/2014 14:15

Even ukip have called their own voters less cultured and educated.
