Its my friends dds sixth birthday soon and she's thinking of taking her to see someone like Katy Perry, Jessie J or Little Mix. I admit I was a bit shocked as I wouldn't personally do this with mydd until early teens at least. For my dds bbirthday we're going to watch the Lion King and friend said 'its a bit babyish' Confused

What age were your dc/would you take your dc to a pop concert?

Mine are 9 and just recently 7. I think they are too young for something like Katy Perry. I imagined maybe taking dd1 in a few years time when she is in secondary school, she is year 4 now. I am however taking her to see Gareth Milone's voices choir next week. (Much better than Katy Perry any day).

Annunziata · 24/05/2014 22:11

6! Definitely not.

I think 11ish, depending on what the concert is.

TheSarcasticFringehead · 24/05/2014 22:14

I think those are too old for her, I wouldn't want my DD at a Jessie J concert until she was in secondary school. Mind you, DD is nearly 9 and has been going to One Direction concerts since she was 7, although the point of them is to be clean and wholesome. Thankfully she didn't see some fan posters- some were blatant, some weren't, but a lot were shocking. The ones I remember best were 'Fuck Me Haz' and 'put your erection in my Direction'- so I suppose it doesn't always matter how clean the performers are meant to be.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 24/05/2014 22:19

I'd say 1D - 6-7, Little Mix - 7/8, Katy Perry - 8/9, Jessie J 9/10, Miley Cyrus/Rhianna - NEVER

Fairylea · 24/05/2014 22:20

10 or 11 ish is about right I think.

I'm 34 and i'm not old enough to see miley :)

stripeyred · 24/05/2014 22:23

I took my 11 year old to a concert recently. I wouldn't have taken them any earlier and don't remember seeing any young children there.

ilovepowerhoop · 24/05/2014 22:24

Dd went her first concert last Sunday (Katy Perry) and she is 10

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 24/05/2014 22:25

I'm 37 and I'm not old enough for Miley!

Littleroobe · 24/05/2014 22:33

I think as others have said it depends on the artist tho I was about 9 or 10 when I saw take that and throughly enjoyed it.

However SarcasticFringe I wouldn't say 1D are always clean and wholesome, a couple of the lyric changes on YouTube are a bit Shock considering their audience age range.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 24/05/2014 22:39

My neighbour had her baby in a sling at a kaiser chiefs gig 3 years ago! She had these baby ear defenders on him and she and he seemed fine Smile

JohnFarleysRuskin · 24/05/2014 22:40

Her sixth birthday? Wow.

PowderMum · 24/05/2014 22:48

I'm older than 40 and obviously old enough for Miley, saw her around 4 years ago with DD who would have been 10/11, she was less risqué than she is now. I'm actually relieved that DD turns 15 this year and can start going to concerts at the O2 whiteout me now.

I think Y7 onwards if they listen to the music/watch the videos then they're old enough.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 25/05/2014 00:01

Hmm, I am far to mean to have taken my kids to some boring cheesy pop show. They have been taking themselves to indie/emo type gigs since they were 14 or so though (parental drop off and pick up).

PollyIndia · 25/05/2014 00:05

My mum took me to see Michael Jackson on the bad world tour when I was 7. I have amazing memories of it. Taking 18 month old DS to his first festival this summer so he will watch live music there. Not sure I would ever take him to see miley or Katy perry in principle!

whydidyoudothat · 25/05/2014 00:13

DD1 was 7 for her first concert, dd2 was 6. We do maybe 2 a year, depending on who is touring. They both love them and we have a fab time with some brilliant memories to look back on.

WyrdByrd · 25/05/2014 00:14

DD's first concert was Noah and the Whale at 7.5, then Rizzle Kicks for her 8th birthday & Jessie J for her 9th.

I'd decided against Jessie J a year or two earlier but have to say she was brilliant, there was no language or offensive dance moves - DD & I loved the whole thing.

For me it's about the size of the venue - the concerts I've taken her to have all been seated and I've made sure we're on the end of a row so she can get out to the loo etc.

I wouldn't take her somewhere like the O2 if you paid me, although she's desperate to go to a 'proper festival' Grin.

Canthisonebeused · 25/05/2014 00:20

Not Katy perry I think to young as she can be very sexual, suggestive. My dd seen 1D at 6. I would consider for my dd the vamps, though sold out. Little mix definitely, taylor swift, Lourdes, Kelly Clarkson, 1D again. Can't think of many more

Canthisonebeused · 25/05/2014 00:21

Yeah def rizzle kicks

ravenAK · 25/05/2014 00:25

Euuurrgh no. I'm 43 & I'm not old enough to go & see One Direction. I'm saving that sort of thing for when I've lost both my hearing & my marbles.

I've done any number of proper outdoor rock festivals with small dc, though. & whitby goth weekend twice a year since they were babies.

As a result, they are safely inoculated against seeing any appeal in prancing pop ponies like Little Mix Grin.

Ear defenders are essential for small dc & live music. Other than that, they can go & see acts of their choice when they are old enough not to need me to accompany them...

Canthisonebeused · 25/05/2014 00:29

I think it depends on the child and patents taste though raven. My dd would happily see any of the above but she would equally enjoy Glastonbury etc. I would take her to any live music so long as it was not inappropriately sexual, violent etc.

Heathcliff27 · 25/05/2014 00:34

I took my daughter to see JLS 2 years ago, she was 8 at the time

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 25/05/2014 00:37

I took my 9 yr old DD with me to see Neil Finn a few weeks ago. It's was a last minute thing as my friend dropped out but she loved it. She did fall asleep at the end though - he gives you value for money so it was v late by the time it was finished. So I'd say 9 is a good age Grin

WyrdByrd · 25/05/2014 01:07

Rizzle Kicks are great live, although their latest album is a bit more rood so they might not be quite so child friendly these days!

Tbh I don't really censor music - I would draw the line at constant gratuitous swearing all the way through but the odd expletive, not so much.

I did get a bit of look from DH today though when DD and I were cooking with Ed Sheeran in the background and one of his more choice lyrics came on - in my defender I only downloaded the album last night Blush.

Actually having just watched him on Jools Holland for the 4th time today I may have to change my mind about avoiding the O2.

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 25/05/2014 01:10

Dd1 will be twelve next week. She hasn't been to a concert yet. I would bring her and DD2 (10) this year, if they are interested enough.
