Its my friends dds sixth birthday soon and she's thinking of taking her to see someone like Katy Perry, Jessie J or Little Mix. I admit I was a bit shocked as I wouldn't personally do this with mydd until early teens at least. For my dds bbirthday we're going to watch the Lion King and friend said 'its a bit babyish' Confused

What age were your dc/would you take your dc to a pop concert?

I took DS to see Bon Jovi a couple of years ago. I think he must've been about 5 at the time.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 25/05/2014 02:15

My DD would be v jealous of that tidy - she's got her heart set on bon jovi for her next gig. Loves them she does.

Latara · 25/05/2014 02:29

My mum is 65. She remembers her mum taking her to see the Beatles playing with the Rolling Stones as support act, when she was 12 - amazing!!

LithaR · 25/05/2014 02:46

I would never have gone to a gig with my mother. First event I went to was The Big Day Out in Milton Keynes. I was 17 and bought the tickets myself with my first wages. I see it as a right of passage and feel sad for kids being taken too soon.

Dd is 15 and has never been to a concert but we live in a smallish city in NZ and flights are to expensive :(

As others have said it all depends on the act.

That said my mum took me to see Bananarama when I was 7 and I loved every minute of it and can still remember the feeling of excitement waiting for them to arrive on stage.

I'm taking my 12 year old to see Black Sabbath on Thursday Grin it's his first concert. We had a choice Justin Timberlake this week or the sabbath next week. We decided on BS as we don't know how much longer they'll be touring and JT has a few more years in him. We like both of them.

I was 7 when I went to see Meatloaf with my parents. It was totally amazing!

Obviously the biggest thing is in making sure the live act is appropriate for the child to see.

The only other consideration is in ensuring the child would actually appreciate it. So many parents project their own thoughts about what they think their kids would like and want onto the kids when the kids would be happier at a water park or doing something else.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 25/05/2014 08:00

For goodness sake, what kind of a person thinks that The Lion King is too babyish for a six year old!? I despair.

ilovepowerhoop · 25/05/2014 09:00

Katy Perry was not suggestive or sexual at all when we saw her last week so wasnt inappropriate for younger children. There were loads of children dd's age (10) and younger at the concert. We had seated tickets and great seats and she put on a great show.

SignoraStronza · 25/05/2014 09:06

Meh. Wouldn't take my kids to pop concerts (couldn't endure that kind of manufactured shit) but have taken dd1 to metal festivals from 2.5 years onwards. Always used ear defenders on them though, as their hearing is probably my main concern.

scarlettsmummy2 · 25/05/2014 09:06

I took my five year old daughter and fifteen year old foster child to Katy Perry last week! We were seated and they absolutely loved it. An amazing show and not remotely raunchy or rude. Would definitely take my daughter again!

ch1a · 25/05/2014 09:30

I'm taking ds1 age 3.5 and ds2 (imminent birth) to a small low key reggae festival in august. Its the kind of event where 50m back from the stage people bring camping chairs and sit down enjoy the relaxation. I can't imagine taking him to an arena concert until he is almost in secondary school but I think exposure to music is great for them and there are so many different environments to do that in..

TidyDancer · 25/05/2014 09:38

LithaR - Feeling sad for kids being taken too soon....by whose standards? I can't understand why you would feel sad for any child having a lovely day out with their parents. My DS will no doubt go to lots of gigs without me when he's older, I very much doubt he will have any of the enjoyment taken away just because I took him to gigs when he was small.

Tension - your DD will love it. They are amazing live and in my experience other fans have always been very nice to children.

myrtleWilson · 25/05/2014 09:45

I think my dd was about 7/8 when I took her to see Cheryl Cole supporting The Black a Eyed Peas.. Since then we've done a few others including Katy Perry who was not at all suggestive and a day long multi act concert. Have always got seats rather than standing and have done a couple of meet and greets which were special treats!

maddy68 · 25/05/2014 09:54

Most tickets state no under 14 s although I did take my daughter to some when she was about 9 so some allow. Always check first as it would be so disappointing not to be let in. Tbh I think yours are too young yet.

ilovepowerhoop · 25/05/2014 09:57

It was only the standing tickets for Katy Perry that stated under 14's not allowed. It was any age for the seated tickets

Picturesinthefirelight · 25/05/2014 10:02

Dd was 6 when we took her to see Lion King - I certainly wouldn't reccomended it for anyone younger than six.

We have taken the dc to a Local radio station outdoor concert (fun fayre, activities etc its awhile day out) when dd was 10 & ds 8. Something like Little Zmix/1D I'd say from around the age if 9/10 onwards.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2014 10:05

I took dd to the x factor tour when she was 3, she loved it, we're going to 1D next week, she has seen them before and she saw Bon Jovi last year.
she's 12 now.

ByTheSea · 25/05/2014 10:07

I took DDs to see Olly Murs and JLS when they were just 9 and just 12. They have been to other concerts with me since (Coldplay and Bon Jovi) and DD1 went to see JLS with just her friend at 14. I think 6 is a bit young but up to the parent really.
