to be annoyed at not being able to get children's shoes and socks

I tried to buy DS (10) some shoes and socks today, none of the children's shoes or socks on sale in 4 different shops went up to his size so I've had to buy adult's trainers for him! The socks are 4-6 so I hope they fit his 6 1/2 feet or the alternative is men's size 6-11 which are going to swamp him. Surely shops expect boys to have larger than 6 1/2 feet before they want adult shoes!

I think M&S sell men's socks in various size ranges, so you could buy those that are the smallest.

Lilaclily · 24/05/2014 13:12

we always have to order in for ds 10 because he has odd shaped feet according to Calrks Hmm

Trollsworth · 24/05/2014 13:13

Sports direct do size 5-9

ShatnersBassoon · 24/05/2014 13:14

I'm fairly sure M&S boys' shoes go up beyond size 6 too actually. Perhaps online might be more fruitful than the high street.

SpottieDottie · 24/05/2014 13:14

Thanks. Lily we are blessed with a local independent shoe shop who can at least supply school shoes and trainers but Clarks stop at size 6 for sandals and so on - so do Startrite and Geox :(

My ds is 11 and size 9 .
The vat seems totally unfair

What about ladies' socks? The sports direct ones are the same style as the men's but smaller.

Aboyandabunny · 24/05/2014 13:53

M&S do 6-8.5. My 10 year old DS has same size feet as yours and wears these.

SpottieDottie · 24/05/2014 14:04

Corus yes, they do, it just seems a shame that at 10 he can't have lovely, bright children's socks rather than the dull black or grey ones. I will try M&S anyway.

SpottieDottie · 24/05/2014 14:06

Corus I don't think it's a case of modern children's foot size - he's 3 sizes above his peers, even his teacher commented that she doesn't need to check the name in his shoes because there is a row of shoes, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2 and then his size 6 1/2 boats. He has larger feet than his 16 year old sister! He's just got big feet, but it'd be nice if he could have pirate/alien/football socks or whatever.

There will be plenty of places you can get brightly coloured socks in men's sizes...... but M&S won't be one of them.

I'd try Primark if I were you.

I'm sure Clarks do children's shoes in bigger sizes than 6 - they certainly do for school shoes, DS only started getting ones from the men's range when he hit size 10, I think, at around age 12 or 13.

Otherwise for decent but cheap trainers and casual shoes in a good range of sizes we mainly go to Sports Direct - they'd normally be cheaper than children's ones from Geox etc despite the VAT.

exexpat · 24/05/2014 15:28

And as far as socks go - women's ones are usually sized 4-7, and many of them would really be unisex styles/colours. I'm pretty sure most of DS's school socks in primary were marked size 4-7 as well.

SingySongy · 24/05/2014 15:30

My son is 11, and has enormous feet - size 9 last time measured.
He can still get school shoes from Clarkes thank God.

Waggamamma · 24/05/2014 15:34

I'm pretty sure it's to do with VAT. After a size 6, you need to pay vat on shoes.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 24/05/2014 15:34

Go to h&m and river island for bright funky man sized socks.

SpottieDottie · 24/05/2014 15:43

exexpat, yes, they do for school shoes but not for sandals etc - we went in to get some for the summer (yes, I accept the blame for the torrential rain today!) and couldn't get any, nor could we get children's socks in the shops. We obviously need to go to the city for socks next time #smalltownwoes :)

Ds1 (18) has size 11 feet and has a pack of angry bird socks, meerkat, and simpson ones all from Tesco and Matalan.

Selvedge · 24/05/2014 16:09

Right now Aldi have some bamboo socks in colourful stripes adult size 6-8.5. Lovely and soft and £3.99 for 3 pairs.

ihearttc · 24/05/2014 16:15

DS1 is 9 and has size 6 feet...Tesco's boys socks are 4-6.5 so they should fit fine and I think Next are the same. I think most places do that size now cause I got some in Matalan the other day as well. I got him some adults ones in 6-8.5 and they were huge.

We don't have a sandal problem because he would rather cut off his feet than be seen in sandals but Ive had to pay a fortune for adults football boots rather than the kids ones which are exactly the same.

ilovepowerhoop · 24/05/2014 16:16

tesco does kids socks in that size
