It appears everyone got out safely which is a blessing but the thought of that beautiful building in flames makes me feel sick.
The MacIntosh Library is arguably the loveliest room in the world and is possibly being destroyed.

I'm not sure why I feel so affected by this.

I know, just bloody awful

Those poor students too, their artwork.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 23/05/2014 15:07

There's that too, a lot of them don't have exams, its all based on the end of year exhibitions.

Sounds as if the whole building will be gutted. News saying a projector explosion started fire in basement before it spread five floors. Hope everyone got out ok. Sad

carlajean · 23/05/2014 15:38

YANBU at all. I've just heard about this and feel so sad. The library is, IMO, the loveliest room I've ever been in.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 23/05/2014 15:39

I've seen photos of flames shooting out the roof and the top floor windows so it seems the whole building is gone.

You can smell the smoke here and we're pretty far away.

It's awful. I really feel for the final year students.

How does this happen from one dodgy projector?

Backinthering · 23/05/2014 15:45

It's devastating. The building is an absolute treasure.

KatoPotato · 23/05/2014 15:47

The Mack library was one of the most glorious spaces ever.

To feel so sad about the Glasgow School of Art fire.
MrsWedgeAntilles · 23/05/2014 15:53

A lot of the inside of the building is wood lined so I suppose it was quite flammable.
I've always loved the degree shows up there, apart from some amazingly good art from the students walking around the building was like being in Rennie MacIntosh's brain. I had planned to go over in the next week or so.

Quite hearteningly the Journal of The Royal Institute of British Architects has tweeted that a way must be found to faithfully restore the building so hopefully there will be a way. It would be very sad indeed to lose it.

Obviously it's a blessing that everyone got out, but this is such sad news. Something in my eye again...

Greyhound · 23/05/2014 16:00

That is so sad :(

mumteedum · 23/05/2014 16:11

I'm sad too. Graduate of another Scottish art school but spent a lot of time at gsa. I can totally understand how it's happened. Health &safety at degree shows very poor though electrical equipment like projectors should be safe. And checked.

Feel dreadfully sorry for all students, staff and glaswegians. :(

Tabby1963 · 23/05/2014 16:14

I've got goosebumps just thinking about it. Shocking and devastating, such a beautiful building. And the students! Oh heavens, their months and months of preparation for exams and exhibitions - all gone Sad. The library and archives too. Terrible. Grateful that no one was injured though.

TheBogQueen · 23/05/2014 16:17

Feel very sorry for the students who have lost their work, it must be devastating

PersonFromPorlock · 23/05/2014 16:22

I've just been reading the updates on Twitter before I came on here.

It's such a relief that everyone got out but, otherwise, it's tragic. Sad

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/05/2014 16:24

I'm absolutely gutted. Its an amazing building, and those poor students who have lost all of their work Sad

PeachandRaspberry · 23/05/2014 16:30

I never thought I could feel so emotional over a building :(

ephemeralfairy · 23/05/2014 16:43

I know, I feel devastated! I went to Glasgow Uni but spent loads of time at the art school union as I had friends who were students there and the club nights were always loads better.
So so sad.

wigglybeezer · 23/05/2014 16:43

I was just talking to my neighbour, an architect, about it and he was wondering about what sprinkler system they had as it was obviously inadequate.

The poor student who's installation started it must feel doubly awful.

I have many family connections to GSA and feel very emotional about it, hope they get it under control ASAP.

I have done three degree shows myself so know how awful it is for the students who lost their work, one useful thing about this generation of students is that they document everything they do as they go along so most will have a lot of evidence of what they have made.

ephemeralfairy · 23/05/2014 16:46

Just looked at some of the pics on Twitter and feel tearful. That library!

Nicknacky · 23/05/2014 16:48

What will happen in respect of degrees? Would photos etc enable them to be given degrees?

OnaPromise · 23/05/2014 16:51

Oh no, no, no. Haven't seen the news, am away to look. Sad

PeachandRaspberry · 23/05/2014 16:53

There's an ex GSA student on the other thread who said it'll depend on how much assessment was already done. Someone also explained that it was the perfect storm, so much of modern art materials are so flammable.

OnaPromise · 23/05/2014 16:55

That god no-one has been hurt but that is still tragic.
