To feel so sad about the Glasgow School of Art fire.

It appears everyone got out safely which is a blessing but the thought of that beautiful building in flames makes me feel sick.
The MacIntosh Library is arguably the loveliest room in the world and is possibly being destroyed.

I'm not sure why I feel so affected by this.

Yanbu.. I used to go clubbing there.

ConcreteElephant · 23/05/2014 16:57

I'm a librarian. Fire is our very greatest fear. This is devastating.

mumteedum · 23/05/2014 16:58

Argh phone! Agree wiggly. Had same thought. Was at our degree show last night. Students so tech savvy will have digital back up at least. Hope they can rehouse depts to keep going whilst they rebuild.

giggly · 23/05/2014 17:04

Fond memories of nights out at the SU as well as many graduate shows, feel verySad

Nicknacky · 23/05/2014 17:22

I hadn't considered the technical back up that the students will do. But many may lose out? How utterly heartbreaking

McFox · 23/05/2014 17:24

I understand, I feel sick too. Devastating.

OnlyLovers · 23/05/2014 17:29

So horribly horribly sad. I used to go clubbing there too and loved it. That's not meant in any way to trivialise the loss of all that heritage and work; just my personal emotional connection to the place.

I just hope they can make some kind of restoration project happen.

Four years of work...

MrsWedgeAntilles · 23/05/2014 22:54

The fire brigade have just said they reckon they've saved about 90% of the building and 70% of the contents, amazing work. It could have been so, so much worse.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 23/05/2014 22:56

Oh no that is so terrible! Have only seen pictures, was such a wonderful place.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 23/05/2014 23:03

Well, its much better than losing the whole lot, which was the rumour doing the rounds at teatime. I've heard that the 70% includes the students' work as well so its even better than could be hoped for.

Well done them!

mrsleomcgary · 23/05/2014 23:19

Amazing that they seem to have saved so much, it would have been irreplaceable. I live near Glasgow but only been in the building once but it's the most stunningly beautiful piece of architecture I was almost in tears about it when I heard the news.

Seems so unlikely that it wouldn't have ANY sprinkler system but was wondering if the age of the building and the fact its a grade A listed building limited what it could have in place?

squoosh · 23/05/2014 23:23

I think other buildings of architectural importance will be reassessing the systems they have in place in the case of a similar situation.

Madcatgirl · 23/05/2014 23:25

A family friend is a lecturer of some note there and his office is in that building, it's just so appallingly dreadful. A cultural tragedy is how he referred to it and I cannot disagree.

itsmeitscathy · 23/05/2014 23:30

It's really sad and upsetting, I pass the building often and it is majorly significant to glasgow, Scotland and architecture in general. It's also terrible and worrying for the students but thankfully no one was hurt. It's not a tragedy though as I keep reading, it's just really shit.

itsmeitscathy · 23/05/2014 23:31

(Just read your post madcat, cultural tragedy is a good way to describe it)

JohnCusacksWife · 24/05/2014 00:37

I think it would be a tragedy if that building was lost. It's beautiful in a way that no modern building ever could be and it would be such a loss if it was gone forever.

Susyb30 · 24/05/2014 02:12

Its so sad, I walked past it when it was on my way home from work today, you could see the flames and the thick black smoke as the fire brigade were trying to get the fire under control. .iv never seen a fire like that in real life. There were people standing looking completely shocked (taking pics and videos on their phones) I was glad to get away from it, my eyes were stinging and it was horrible breathing in. It really was like a scene in some disaster film. Such a tragedy for all affected.

chocoluvva · 24/05/2014 13:04

Sprinklers were in the process of being installed but the installation process is so disruptive the engineers were waiting till after the graduate show....

Mostly good news here. The library is still lost but they intend on faithfully reproducing it.

Massive props to the fire brigade.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 24/05/2014 20:01

Fire brigade deserve huge praise for their efforts.
