Cancelling non refundable air tickets

FlossieLondon · 22/05/2014 10:01

It is looking inceasingly like I won't be able to go the States with my husband for a family wedding, as I have to stay home to care for our son. (See previous thread.)

We've been on to the airline to cancel my tickets (to reclaim tax) to be told that this can't be done for one person on the booking - it is both of us or nothing. We can't do that my husband is best man, he needs to go out on the flight we booked.

After a lot of pleading the airline has finally agreed to cancel my ticket if I want, but the admin fee means that we only get a few pounds back. This is only a matter of changing the booking on a computer? What the hell? I am bloody furious.

Keeping the ticket for the moment... hoping and praying that another seat will become available so our son can come with us.

If you do manage to get DS on the flight as a standby what will happen re the return trip?

middleagedspread · 22/05/2014 18:21

Trip Advisor have an air travel forum, or you could ask on Flyertalk.com. It's full of experts. Good luck.

FlossieLondon · 22/05/2014 18:51

The return trip is no problem there is room - it is going out that's full. There is a waiting list for the flight already and we are not at the top! Blame the World Cup!

There's no way we'd take him out on standby unless we were sure of a place coming back, which there is.

I remember your other thread and you really got a pasting.I hope everything works out and you get on that plane, after the last few weeks you deserve it.

swlondonnanny · 22/05/2014 19:25

Flossie are they fully booked as in economy and business as well? If there is a seat free in business could you not get you child seat there and swap with your DH or you ( so one of you will use his seat and your child will be in economy with one of you)? Just a thought, don't know if that would be possible

drspouse · 22/05/2014 19:33

It sounds like they aren't actually because she was offered the chance to upgrade.

Flossie I don't know why you bother coming onto mumsnet and telling people they can't read/are stupid. If you don't like the advice people give you just ignore it,people are only trying to help, it doesn't effect any of us in the slightest if you go on this trip or not. Please try not to use offensive language towards people who are only trying to help you.

Doooooowop · 22/05/2014 21:04

You were happy with the terms and conditions when you booked this flight so tough that the airline won't suddenly change the rules for you.

BrianTheMole · 22/05/2014 21:07

Well I'm not surprised you got a pasting last time op, with that attitude. Very unpleasant of you.

SocialMediaAddict · 22/05/2014 21:14

Blimey. That's rude.

Why doesn't your DH fly with your DS? You get on an earlier/later flight and fly back together.

VegasIsBest · 22/05/2014 21:17

And now we can all see your sister's point of view.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/05/2014 21:18

You have reaped what you have sown.

I hope your sister has a lovely break.

Bearbehind · 22/05/2014 21:19

Being so fucking rude isn't going to help. You never said you couldn't afford any business class fare, it read as if you couldn't all go business class. Buying one seat in business and swapping was a good potential option.

You've been given plenty of suggestions- if none of them work you'll have to suck up the loss- end of.

The comment about people potentially thinking your mother would have your son as she's now off work is very Hmm too.

I think the truth is that's what you'd like to happen......

Only1scoop · 22/05/2014 21:22

Flossie AIBU about what exactly?

Yes a Shame that your economy tickets cannot be refunded but its stated clearly when you book.

Hope your mums job was ok.

ILoveCoreyHaim · 22/05/2014 21:22

I can't believe you are so fucking stupid you can't work this out for yourself instead of asking for people's help then getting all sweary when u don't like the answer. You booked cheaper unchangeable tickets and you expected your sis to keep your naughty kid for 6 days without even asking. I hope you haven't put pressure on your DM to ring in sick

GobTheGoblin · 22/05/2014 21:23

why do I have to keep saying the same things over and over. I don't why I bother coming in here some of you are so fucking stupid you can't even read.

Wow, you are ungrateful.

SuperFlyHigh · 22/05/2014 21:24

OP when I want to fly to USA at peak times and see close friends I have to work round it to see the dates and times I can afford. Or I don't go or I suck it up and pay extra.

What really makes you so special from everyone else?!

You can work round it your DH could fly another day yet you're having a meltdown.

Chippednailvarnish · 22/05/2014 21:24

some of you are so fucking stupid you can't even read

And some people are so fucking stupid they don't book flexible airfares when they can't afford not to.

ikeaismylocal · 22/05/2014 21:25

Unfortunately flossie is not going to be able to rely on her charm to persuade anyone from the airline to do her any favors.

Bearbehind · 22/05/2014 21:27

It's not difficult to see why the sister told her where to shove her idea of giving up her weekend is it?

SuperFlyHigh · 22/05/2014 21:27

ikea earlier today before she kicked off I thought OP was being a tad entitled and stroppy but didn't want to stir the hornets nest.

Now though I Know she's being entitled and stroppy.

jacks365 · 22/05/2014 21:28

Flossie has a point about people not reading even if she was rude about it. She has already explained that she can not change dh ticket to ds as it is non transferable but still people keep suggesting it.

dietcokefan · 22/05/2014 21:29

I hope your mum doesn't need that job. Having your leave cancelled then turning up with a "stress" sick note - really going to make her look good.
