AIBU to be concerned about DS1?

Hi all

I'm looking for a bit of perspective here as to wether I'm being over anxious over nothing, or not.

Ok here's what's been happening (DS1 is 4.5yo)

  • His weight is dropping. He has always been slim but since Feb we have been concerned he has lost a lot of weight. I've no idea what he weighed before this time, but I weighed him in March and he weighed 14.5kg (and was 103cm tall). To DH and I he seemed pale, dark rings round his eyes etc. We spoke to preschool and they did us a food diary of what he eats there for a while, which seemed fine, and we put him back on whole milk. He put on 1kg in a month and I was pleased things seemed to be moving in the right direction. But now a month later and he's back down at 14.7kg. All his trousers are on the tightest setting and still seem to be in danger of falling down all the time. There's nothing to him when you hug him. He can be fussy over food but I'd say he eats as well as most other kids his age and has a balanced diet of fresh fruit, veg, etc. drinks and toilet all normal. He always was between 25th and 50th centile for his weight/age. Now he's on 1st/2nd
  • tiredness. He sleeps 10-12hrs solidly a night but will still seem tired all day, lying on the floor or sofa etc. We bought him a new better mattress in case his old one was uncomfortable, it has improved the quality of his sleep but not resolved the tiredness.
  • over the last couple of weeks he's had maybe 4 small nosebleeds, one during the night.

MIL thinks I'm overreacting, because 'kids are meant to be thin, better than all these fat kids you see around these days' Hmm

So what do you think? WIBU to take him to the GP?

Sorry it's so long, didn't want to drip! Thanks for reading this far

Hope he's OK Rino.

The best of luck at the hospital - you are understandably nervous but at least the wheels are in motion now. I hope your son is ok x

gotnotimeforthat · 22/05/2014 13:28

rhino no need to applogise silly!

I understand you now, I think that they probably do just want to get the tests over and done with today as its a lot quicker at the hospital and you can get the results the same day.

Please try not to worry hopefully its just a case of slightly low iron or something as those symptoms you describe are common symptoms of anaemia.

Again, good luck

DinoSnores · 22/05/2014 13:30

Great that the GP and the paeds team are taking things so seriously.

Healthy skinny kids don't concern me, but those who are losing (or not gaining) weight do. Sounds like you have done completely the right thing.

Let us know how you get on.

SouthernComforts · 22/05/2014 13:32

Good luck, it's scary when they act so quickly but remember that's a good thing. The sooner he's seen the sooner the scary stuff can be ruled out (fingers crossed!!)

CrapBag · 22/05/2014 13:35

Fingers crossed they are just being cautious. Its good that they are listening. I was thinking anaemia too. The nose bleeds could be a coincidence. DS gets them but only ever at night. I have no idea why.

And your MILs comment about better him being skinny than all these fat kids about was stupid and ignorant. Glad you didn't listen to her. Don't ask her for advice again. Angry (at her, not you OP).

bumbleymummy · 22/05/2014 13:35

Glad he's being seen so quickly. Hope you get some answers quickly.

magimedi · 22/05/2014 13:36

Sorry to hear about your DH - but great that you have such a good & on the ball GP. Far better than having to wait around.

Hope all goes really well for you all.

notaflamingclue · 22/05/2014 13:37

Good luck rino, they're always super-cautious with children. I'm speaking from experience, having spent most of last week in one hospital or another with DD - who, incidentally, is fine now.

ballstoit · 22/05/2014 13:38

Hope all is well, you did the right thing following your instinct.

MrsKCastle · 22/05/2014 13:43

Good luck. It must seem scary that they're rushing things, but it is a good thing. It makes sense that they want to investigate quickly just to be on the safe side. And at least you should have some answers quickly rather than worrying as you wait for the referral.

CrispyFern · 22/05/2014 13:44

Good luck at the hospital.

AntoinetteCosway · 22/05/2014 13:49

It sounds like the NHS at its best, seeing him so quickly. Fingers crossed all is well and he just needs a bit more iron!

Best of luck at the hospital today.

SweepTheHalls · 22/05/2014 14:02

Thinking if you, hope it is a positive experience.

minibmw2010 · 22/05/2014 14:02

Good luck at the hospital. Glad to see your GP has been pro-active.

Whereisegg · 22/05/2014 14:23

Good luck, do try not to worry too much, they are cautious with dc as pp have said.

CommanderShepard · 22/05/2014 14:32

That's great that they're seeing him so quickly and like everyone says, they generally don't take chances with children. Really hoping everything is fine.

BigArea · 22/05/2014 14:35

Fingers crossed for you and DS OP Thanks

softlysoftly · 22/05/2014 14:39

Good luck OP hoping its just anaemia that a good bit of red meat can sort out.

Fingers crossed for you xx

Isthiscorrect · 22/05/2014 14:41

Fingers crossed its just the NHS doing what they do best and checking it all out and that DS will be fine. Big hugs to all of you.

HeartShapedBox · 22/05/2014 14:47
