Not an AIBU but posting here for some quick advice.
Just left London on a coach and its boiling! I'm alone with my 9 month old dd and she's already drank 10oz of weak squash. I have another cup filled with 8oz then I'm done. There's a service station stop in an hour and a half... What's the best thing I could buy? Obviously no fizzy stuff!
She refuses plain water even when thirsty and before I get slammed for giving her squash, I was advised to by the gp as she was getting badly constipated.
She only has milk in the morning and at bedtime so I didn't bring any with me.
Any advice will be appreciated!

Buy a carton of Apple or orange juice and bottles water at the services. You can dilute the juice.

SpringBreaker · 19/05/2014 12:55

Ice lolly? And tissues

Is there no air con on the coach though?

HighwayDragon · 19/05/2014 12:55

Buy a big bottle of flavoured water, one of the litre size, you can drink it too then

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 19/05/2014 12:55

Well to be truthful, sod what is best - just make sure she gets enough fluids in her regardless. I am sure the service station will have some squash of some sort you can give her.

WeeClype · 19/05/2014 12:55

Buy a bottle of water and a bottle of fresh orange juice so you could add some orange flavour to the water.

BlameItOnTheMoonlight · 19/05/2014 12:56

How long are you on a coach for? It can't be so hot that you need constant water, can it? I'd just go with water, it might be the ideal opportunity to get her drinking it.

Moxiechick · 19/05/2014 13:01

Ahh juice, of course! Thank you all!
Air cons not working very well and she seems much thirstier than normal.
It's a 5 hour coach so quite a long way. Packed more fluids today than I normally do due to the weather but clearly not enough!
Dd is my pfb so I'm a panicker!
Thank you Smile

"She refuses plain water even when thirsty"

I wonder what you'll do when she starts refusing everything but vintage champagne?

God, there's always one isn't there!

Those flavoured waters are full of additives, sweeteners and all kinds of crap. Don't give a 9 month baby that!

Check the juice you buy OP they quite often have added sugar and flavourings. Nothing too horrendous but just in case you didn't know. Enjoy your trip.

LadySybilLikesCake · 19/05/2014 13:05

A lot of water and some cartons of juice should do it. Remember that you'll need a lot of nappies Wink May be wise to look for some sort of battery operated hand fan too Smile

Sirzy · 19/05/2014 13:07

Helpful comment there Sophie!

I would buy cartons of juice and dilute them with water

drinkyourmilk · 19/05/2014 13:10

Some very judgey posts here!
Yes water is best. Most children take to it no problem. Some just don't. Formula and breast milk is sweet-its no wonder they want something sweet to drink, and something with a little flavour. A 5 hour coach trip with a 9 month old has the potential to be difficult, why upset the baby then? Plus as another passenger on the coach I'd appreciate carers keeping babies/children as happy as possible (obviously it's not always possible!)

Moxiechick · 19/05/2014 13:11

Packed lots of nappies but a fans a good idea too! Thanks.
It's so hard travelling alone with a baby, there's always something to worry about or forget!
supersophie if you have any advice that the doctors didnt on how to get dd to drink water then I'd be really grateful. You don't need to be so bitchy.

I find my kids quite like sparkling water, as they like the bubbles. Avoids them having all the sugar in juice and squash.

ICanSeeTheSun · 19/05/2014 13:16

Is bottled water ok for a 9 month old, I thought it had to be cooled boiled water.

They will had the bottles of baby juice in the service station.

ICanSeeTheSun · 19/05/2014 13:19

How I got DS to drink water, was to very slowly to weaken the squash. I used a syringe to measure out the juice and then once a week went down 1ml.

NickiFury · 19/05/2014 13:22

There's a thirsty 9 month old baby stuck on a bus in this heat with not much access to fluids and some posters still manage to find a way to slip the digs in Hmm. No wonder MN has a crap reputation, because those kinds of shitty comments are the ones that get noticed.

Moxiechick · 19/05/2014 13:23

ICanSeeTheSun thanks.
She hardly has much squash at all in it, the colour hardly changes so its not much. Maybe a syringe would make it easier to lessen. Smile

I think things don't need to be sterilised after 6 months, so bottled water should be fine. I think it's the minerals (salt?) that you need to watch out for though. Plain water is best but if you can't get hold of that, just look for something with a low sodium content (NHS says "less than 200 milligrams (mg) a litre of sodium (also written as Na)" and "no more than 250mg a litre of sulphate (also written as SO or SO4)")

You may wish to avoid giving her too much as it's not good, so try to use a fan too.

Sirzy · 19/05/2014 13:36

DS didn't drink water at all until about 6 months ago. He is now 4.5 and mainly drinks water. I didn't force him to drink it because until he was ready j

Reminds me of a friends dd, aged 4 or 5, who had a smoked salmon sandwich at a party, and cheerfully thereafter requested smoked salmon whenever visiting friends on playdates etc when asked if she would like a snack Grin

PixieofCatan · 19/05/2014 13:53

Like Lady says, it's actually the mineral content in bottled water which makes it inadvisable for young children, but if that is all you have it's better than no fluids. Do you have a bottle with you that you could ask them to fill up for you at a tap?
