To be very annoyed that dd is so sunburnt?

Dd2 is 4.

It was lovely here today and she wanted to play in the garden so I put factor 50 sun lotion on her and she played from approx 10.30-1130 am then as it was getting a bit hot and she needed her lunch she was indoors from 11.30-2pm.
Reapplied sun cream (water resistant apparently) and she played in the paddling pool for 1 hour. Got out, reapplied sun cream and she played till about 430 pm.

Her face and arms and back are very sunburnt! Why!?? I thought I had reapplied enough and often enough? Other dcs had same sun cream on at the same times and they are not burnt at all and ds1 and 2 are much paler in general than dd2.
I do not have a clue why dd has got so burnt? Half of me wondered about the sun cream but as the other dcs have used it and are fine it can't be that.

Thanks mychildren - I'll give it a go.

It's ridiculous. I'm actually in pain in a couple of places, and we were only out for an hour or so!

So, she spent 3.5 hours in the sun? 210 minutes? SPF 50 in theory gives 50 times longer without burning, so that implies she would burn in 4-5 minutes with nothing on. I think it's more likely that the pool is the issue.

I don't, I can burn in that time.

my kids could burn in about 5 mins

the problem here op is a lack of clothes. sunscreen isnt as good as covering your skin. they do really good sun suits now.

We've given up on normal sunscreens that need to reapplied regularly and have switched to a once a day, water resistant gel (Ultrasun Sports factor 30). It's fabulous....not a single red mark or outbreak of prickly heat etc ever since we've started using it. And it truly does last all day with no reapplication needed, even in the heat of the south of France. It's expensive but worth it for the peace of mind and lack of hassle.

OP - if it's bad sun burn then don't bother putting after-sun type lotions onto it. Go to the pharmacy and get some proper burn cream (like acriflex, I'm sure there are others that are similar).

I got sun burnt when I was little years ago and a family friend who was a doctor told my mum to do this - much more soothing and healing than a simple after sun cream. And I'd guess that if you asked the pharmacist these days they might have even better burn creams...

hope she's feeling better soon, remember to make sure she drinks plenty. Unfortunately I think that whilst she is still giving off heat with the sun burn it's still doing damage so see if she will have a cool bath or even just sit with something cool or cold on her to take heat out of her...
