Use the classes for support and pretend I am following the Slimming World diet?

Cheaper than an extra fifteen pounds per week for counselling at LighterLife, on top of the product price.

Yes three different diets mentioned Hmm

They are. The whole shake instead of a proper meal messes you up, so you can never return to proper food and not gain weight

There is no evidence for this at all. You may be interested in an article by Krista Kazazza called Myths, Facts and Presumptions about Obesity which was published last year in NEJM which addresses this notion.

Also, Diabetes UK has also just funded a study looking into the use of VLCD is obese patients versus standard daily minus 500 advice - to the tune of 2.5 million pounds, because the evidence is so good. You can see information about it on their website.

Clickable

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 21:11

There is so much that is factually incorrect on that link Mamma I don't even know where to start.

maggiethemagpie · 18/05/2014 21:16

Have you ever heard of Dr. John Briffa's 'escape the diet trap?' Good for yo yo dieters as it teaches you to completely change how you see food. I couldn't stand the up down up down of going on and off diets all the time, and am following this now.

If talking about being 'fair', I would be upset if I knew one of the members of my SW group were instead following a vlcd and having good losses, accepting praise, certificates, slimmer of the week prizes etc dishonestly

THIS Its really not on. I lost 10 stone with SW in 2002/2003. It came off easily.

After gaining back 3/4 stone I went back last August and its taken me since then to lose 2 stone 4 pounds. And that's sticking to it religiously. It doesn't help though that I cant eat citrus fruits because they give me colic so considering some of the speed food is off limits to me I think im doing ok. I will still be about a stone overweight when I finish because I have loose skin to accommodate. Its hard enough with other people having bigger losses than me I cant imagine what it would be like having a cheat in the class having GINORMOUS losses Confused

Hobnobissupersweet · 18/05/2014 21:43

Precisely what bamboo, specify which lines are factually incorrect and we will dissect them.
Are you a lighter life or similar consultant btw?

Hobnob interested to know your qualifications that you feel you can discuss this - in an evidence based way?

Hobnobissupersweet · 18/05/2014 22:39

Let's hear yours first then shall we bamboo, though I raise you a PhD

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 22:44
  1. If you read ERDD 96/8 and Codex Stan 204-1995 it tells you about the legal requirements for essential fats.
  2. The fibre intake on a VLCD ( LL, Cambridge) is in line and not really that different to the average fibre intake in the UK, as define by the NDNS. Which is admittedly lower than it should be, but bearing in a mind a VLCD has significantly less calories.
  3. Won't even dignify the silly comments on sweeteners - EFSA just published yet another document on their use just a few months ago.
  4. There is a large body of evidence showing that your metabolic rate is not wrecked after rapid weight loss! It's all there - for anyone to read, should they wish too and assuming they can interpret it.
DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 22:44

Not sure you do raise me a PhD.
Shall we sit here comparing qualifications?

My guess is mine trump yours Smile

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 22:47

203-1995.

So you clearly can interpret it! I love it when this happens. Someone who should know better but clearly doesn't, yet still makes comments.

It would be like me making a comment on, I don't know, bone health or something, because I know a lot about nutrition! I just wouldn't do it.

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 22:51

Please avail yourself of the Diabetes UK website too if you're interested. The research currently being undertaken by Roy Taylor and Mike Lean's groups is there in detail.

Hobnobissupersweet · 18/05/2014 22:52

You still haven't answered my main question bamboo, are you a consultant for lighter life or similar, or are you a properly qualified dietician?

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 22:57

No, I don't work for Lighterlife or Cambridge or any of the many other Euorpean ones.

Am medically qualified, three postgrad degrees and two postdocs! All in relevant fields, I can assure you!

Even if I did work commercially, it's neither here nor there. I know many commercial scientists who are respected in their field and very credible. The data is what it is! Go take a look - PM me if you want/need any further info.

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 22:58

And for the record, unless dealing with a relatively well informed bariatric dietitian, most dietitians know bog-all about VLCDs.

They know even less about metabolism generally.

Redglitter · 18/05/2014 23:08

I think going to SW classes when you're on a vlcd is unfair to other people.

SW says youll lose around half a stone a month on it. A vlcd is double that. Youre going to be going to a class where people are sticking to SW and losing maybe 1 or 2lbs a week. Think how theyre going to feel hearing you getting double that every week. That could really dishearten people.

why not ask your doctor or practise nurse to weigh you. Dont potentially sabotage someone else's diet by claiming to be following a plan when youre not

DamnBamboo · 18/05/2014 23:17

And what is your expertise hob given your casual mention of your PhD. What exactly is your PhD in? I hope it's a relevant area!

SoleSource · 18/05/2014 23:18

I feel very confident I will succeed. I think you're right Redglitter

It isn't fair, I shan't go.

Good luck with your CBT OP.
I really hope it makes a difference to you.
Preliminary data in the area of weight management is promising.

MsJupiter · 18/05/2014 23:34

I had considered doing this as still had a boxful of LL and S&S packs. However have decided to go for SW proper. I might have a bar at lunchtime if I'm on the go.

I did LL in 2008 and lost 6.5 stone, changed my habits and learnt a lot however it has gone back on over 5 yrs, mostly during a period of depression.

I originally did ww many years ago and I think it taught me worse habits than I already had. SW seems to have a similar focus on low fat+sugar/sweeteners so I am using the knowledge I have gained from LL, avoiding sugar/excess carbs and using my daily syns on healthy fats, no nasty frylight or bloody muller lights!

I do think it's a good rounded plan though despite its drawbacks. It is making me think about what I eat whereas LL took that choice away. When you have a lot of weight to lose, sometimes that is necessary just to cut the sugar craving and give yourself some headspace from food. If you need that then the SW meetings won't be much fun or offer the support you will need. I think give the SW way a go but use packs to supplement if you want (like on LLLite).

By the way I am only on week 1 of SW so I might be talking out of my considerable arse.

Darkesteyes · 18/05/2014 23:44

Sole Source I hope I didn't come across too harshly I do know how you feel and it can be bloody hard work.

SoleSource · 19/05/2014 00:02
