To not know whether to move to tunbridge wells or west Sussex?

Mixedupmind · 18/05/2014 16:07

We want to move from Surrey, I use Surrey loosely as we are bordering London before my eldest starts school next year
We are renting and would like them to have their own rooms which currently they don't and we couldn't afford them too, a nice garden and a nice school.
The roman catholic school we would get living here is lovely but the secondary feeder school is near enough in Croydon which worries me.
Just would like a village lifestyle without having to drive as we don't want the extra outlay
My husband does drive so no problem for town trips / visiting family
Kent seems lovely but secondary schools are mainly grammar?
West sussex seems nice apart from Bognor apparently
Any advice?

If you find Horsham too pricey OP I think you may be disappointed house hunting in Surrey.

AllAboveBroad · 18/05/2014 21:57

Sorry; Kent!

Mixedupmind · 18/05/2014 22:07

Well Kent £900 would get us a 3 bed decent sized house whereas Horsham would be a small 2 bed, probably just the size of properties in certain areas more than anything else
Funny comment from the above poster :)

"but do avoid Broadbridge Heath, Crawley and Bewbush."

well Broadbridge Heath is IN Horsham which you've just said is lovely. and Bewbush is in Crawley, so that also makes no sense.

I live in Crawley, and while it wouldn't necessarily have been my first choice of place to live (we're here as it's close to dp's job, i originate from a nearby village) it's a perfectly nice place to live.
No different to any other town imho

spottydolphin · 18/05/2014 22:30

if your budget is £900 a month you'll prob not find a 3 bed in crawley either mind you

AllAboveBroad · 18/05/2014 22:32

Broadbridge Heath is in the Horsham district but is its own village, the same as Southwater. Bewbush is an area in the Crawley district.

teaandthorazine · 18/05/2014 22:36

Or in the much-maligned Croydon! I'm half heartedly looking for a two bed with garden in south Croydon and rarely seeing anything worth living in for less than £1200pcm. As for three beds, not a chance (unless you want to live in the proper rough bits of which I will admit there are some Wink)

Mixedupmind · 18/05/2014 22:43

£900 isn't our budget but is what we pay here
Crawley was lovely years ago when my uncle moved there, the only bad things I've heard people complain about are lots of immigrants ( if you're someone who doesn't like non English people ) there and " chavs "
Maybe what I'm imagining doesn't exist :(
Nice little village school, small classes with goo ofsted reports, nice secondary's and a few shops nearby but with a decent town a bus ride away, safe for the kids and a nice way of life...maybe only in a dream!

I think it would be fairer to ask parents of boys who are at john Fisher's how they are finding that school. It will have boys from all over place.

I live in Sutton Borough and my kids are in schools here.
I think I've commented on OP's thread on similar subject before.

There's a proposal for WCGS to build a new Free School, most likely somewhere in Croydon/Purley/Sutton area:

www.wcgsfederation.co.uk/latest-news/

Greenshaw school is to build one somewhere in Sutton area.

Rent for £900 in Frant - is East Sussex an option (and if not, why not?)

Frant's on the main train line, close to T Wells (no idea about buses), good village primary (won't be small classes I would imagine but no worse than any other state school). The secondaries look like they need careful investigation, esp for sixth form (could always move then) but have Good ofsted verdicts.

Feminine · 19/05/2014 06:31

I think you might have to go further than those two places then. I live in a place that has most of your wishes, especially the school concerns. I am in Dorset though.

BalloonSlayer · 19/05/2014 06:36

I was going to PM you with some more ideas but having read your last post I don't think I'll bother . . . not sure I want someone with your attitudes living near me.

LadyWithLapdog · 19/05/2014 06:51

So you or your uncle doesn't like non-English and chavs? It's not so clear from your post. If it's you, your poor kids.

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2014 06:54

Move to West Yorkshire. You've described where I l

BikeRunSki · 19/05/2014 06:54

..... I live!

ElleMcFearsome · 19/05/2014 06:56

Jeez, quick outranged post to defend Bognor. It isn't that horrendous!

ElleMcFearsome · 19/05/2014 06:56

*outraged.

JingletsJangletsYellowBanglets · 19/05/2014 07:08

1- Where does your husband need to commute to (driving his car)

2- what is your budget

3- what are your minimum requirements?

You won't find a 3 bed with a garden in tunbridge wells, for example, for 900, but you may find one in tonbridge.

MardyBra · 19/05/2014 07:17

And this is in Aibu because ...?

ElleMcFearsome · 19/05/2014 07:19

OP's previous threads asking the same question but about vaguely differing locales are also in AIBU, I'd guess Wink

puzzlepiecebehindthecouch · 19/05/2014 08:03

It is sad that you use words like 'rough' and 'a dump' to refer to places you don't want to live, and then reveal seemingly that the reason behind those descriptions is lots of 'immigrants' and 'chavs'. Then words like 'safe' and 'decent' to describe places which are presumably free of the immigrants and chavs. My feeling is that the choice of terms is damaging, and subtly perpetuates discrimination of particular groups. I would like to think that if you tried to be a little more open minded about who you would be happy to share a street / school / town with you would be able to relax a little about your relocation options. Immigrants and people you would call 'chavs' do not equal unsafe, un-decent, undesirable towns. Honestly, they don't!

slartybartfast · 19/05/2014 08:07

sorry op but too many threads on the same subject is just annoying now ...

stick a pin in a map

personally i wouldnt chose tunbridge wells, lovely as it is - it is very rich and unless you can keep up and have money to burn spend, you will feel like a poor relation.

DorisAllTheDay · 19/05/2014 08:12

What's wrong with Bognor? I lived there until quite recently. Like most seaside towns it has its grot bits, but there's an OK high street, a lovely beach and the schools round about are good. If you're after high culture you're not far from Chichester where you'd pay at least 20% more in housing costs. Public transport routes are also good with lots of buses and a main line through to London.

waterlego6064 · 19/05/2014 08:22

NoArmani, me too :) Love it.

Eastpoint · 19/05/2014 08:31

Bognor has good sports facilities, a cinema, the beach & easy access to the South Downs if you want a different sort of walk. Housing costs are low so you could get somewhere within your budget.
