Talking with fellow school mum today. I mentioned about how x shop had own brand suncream 50+ kids stuff for less than half price of nivea. She said that own brand isn't as effective but i argued that it's all the same provided the factor is same as they have to conform to EU standards etc. who IBU? Smile

Lidl's own brand Cien suncream is very good.

We have friends in Germany and that is all they use and they generally get better weather than us.

I have ridiculously sensitive skin when it comes to sun tan lotion wonders if i'm the only person left on the planet who still calls it this and have only been able to use Nivea in the past without having an allergic reaction.

I tried the Cien last year on a whim as it was only cheap and just thought if it doesn't work I haven't wasted to much money. I'll give some of the other non branded ones a try now too.

iamdivergent · 15/05/2014 20:39

i got the morrisons stuff, 5 star uva rating - £3.50 for 150 ml baby and toddler factor 50+ Grin

I buy the once a day sun cream from either Aldi or Lidl, can't remember which as I shop at both, but it's fab and means I don't have to worry about fair haired, fair skinned ds when he's at school or holiday club.

coffeetofunction · 15/05/2014 20:55

I think avon's is a five star rating. I remember using it, also comes with a money back guarantee whether it's been used or not... I also like boots as it's 5* but my check out the tesco 1 mentioned earlier in the thread Wink

Tweasels · 15/05/2014 20:57

This is a really interesting thread. DD is ginger and looks like a bloody porcelain doll. I'm terrible in the sun and burn in England with anything less than 30 on so I'm terrified to let her outside Grin

I was planning (and I know there is no logic in this) to just go down the expensive must be better route before we go abroad this year. You just may have persuaded me otherwise.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/05/2014 21:00

I ordered the Superdrug 400ml SPF30 5 star rated suncream for £4.98 (on a better than half price deal) for our holiday. Their other suncreams/sprays, etc are also on offer

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 16/05/2014 21:34

I remember a tv programme last year in which Tesco value cream came our way ahead of the branded stuff. Tbh I've not voiced any difference between that and the Nivea we used to use. So value all the way here.

gordyslovesheep · 16/05/2014 21:35

yes I have used the Aldi one for the past 2 years - it's ace and it is cheap so they can have a bottle at school, one at holiday club, one at home etc

BolshierAyraStark · 16/05/2014 21:38

Apparently Aldi & Asda came out best in the Which? Tests so I know where I'll be going...

meditrina · 16/05/2014 21:39

Which? Magazine released a report on sunscreen effectiveness. Supermarket own brands score highly. Calypso (cheap brand) was the best buy this time. ASDA (which still gets a very good write up this time, on a par with Aldi) was best last report.

This is the thread from earlier today about the Which? Report (includes link to it).

YANBU. However for me, the star rating is important and how it feels on the skin. For that reason I am dedicated to Clarins spray (gorgeous smell) and Riemann (sp?) P20. I have skin that burns easily and gets prickly heat with many sun creams. The P20 stuff is brilliant, I haven't burnt since I've been using it.

Soltan is my back up and suits DS and it's usually on offer.

TheFairyCaravan · 16/05/2014 21:49

DH and I went to Cape Verde at the end of March/beginning of April. We took Malibu sun cream and went through bottles of Factor 30 and Factor 50, yet I still burnt. I couldn't understand it because when we go to the Med in July/August I don't burn through Factor 15 or 20, so when I saw the news today about the suncreams it made sense although it did anger me.

iamdivergent · 16/05/2014 21:55

Thanks meditrina that's a good link

Malibu suncream has a very bad reputation!

Cape Verde - 14 degrees north, you were there six weeks from peak UV
Mediterranean - 35 degrees north, again six weeks from peak UV

latitude matters.

oh, for the Australian choice of a LITRE of decent sunscreen for 10 dollars, although that was a few years back.

Can anyone recommend one that might not bring me and ds out in painful spots everywhere?

goodasitgets · 16/05/2014 22:21

I use the banana boat aerosol ones. Only because I'm usually around horses/hay etc and it's good to be able to spray without rubbing dirt/hay all over my skin. I have sensitive skin and never reacted to it

SapphireMoon · 16/05/2014 22:22

I have just bought large [400ml] bottle of Tesco value sunscreen for 2.98 [I think].
Factor 15 but 5 star UVA rating. Nice smell too.
Hope it works!

goodasitgets · 16/05/2014 22:23

And it's £6 on amazon

BauerTime · 16/05/2014 22:28

What is wrong with Malibu? I love their dry oil spray and never burn with it

cerealqueen · 16/05/2014 22:30

Frorg, is that a sun allergy maybe?

ilovepowerhoop · 16/05/2014 22:30

the Malibu protection lotion failed the UVA and UVB tests

ToffeeMoon · 16/05/2014 22:31

I don't think you have to use loads. I use a thin layer of factor 50 and we never burn.

Does it really lose its protective value after a year? My parents used to have a suncream bag we took away with us, same old bottles in every year. We even had a factor 2. I would never do that now but, still, we didn't burn. Is the sun hotter now?

Suncream companies are surely going to tell you to use a bottle a day and buy fresh for every trip!
