Amazing animal videos on FB et al

So, you know how there are MILLIONS of animal videos of animals doing amazing things...cats breastfeeding ducklings, cats saving kids from dogs, whales thanking people for disentangling them from lines, lions, bears and tigers being friends etc etc etc

At what point do people stop saying THIS IS AMAZING about each and every video like it's a one-off, and acknowledge that animals are far more intelligent, compassionate, multi-faceted etc, they just can't speak human.

AND STOP TREATING THEM LIKE SHIT. Stop the speceism

Are you implying I am past it?

I am

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/05/2014 22:36

I'm fairly sure I've noticed your posts and nickname before, but in any case I think I tend to unintentionally pay extra attention to posts that have been written by posters whose nicknames I 'recognise' in some way.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 22:37

I've been here far too long

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/05/2014 22:38

Not at all! Blush

Backinthering · 16/05/2014 06:49

Hully I know exactly what you mean. I think there's still this Victorian hangover of man made in God's image, with dominion over the beasts of the earth. We think we're somehow more special, and therefore entitled to exploit other living creatures - by eating them, wearing them, running them over like rubbish if they get in the way of where we've built our roads, and helping ourselves to their habitats.
We're just another species of great ape, we're capable of love, joy and compassion so why the hell should we be so surprised when other animals are?
Probably too uncomfortable for people to think about as our entire lifestyle is built upon the above-mentioned exploitation.

As for zoos and sea life centers being important in terms of conservation.... the only conservation that's relevant is proper habitat preservation. Otherwise we're just keeping the poor creatures alive for our own entertainment. There's no point apart from for our own benefit to conserve a species that effectively has nowhere to live.

I wonder if future generations will look back on our treatment of the others we share our planet with, with revulsion and disbelief. I hope so.

Sorry. Can't stop laughing at the thought if zoos and sea life centres being part of the solution and not a major problem. Fewer than 15% of the animals in zoos are endangered, only 15% of zoos are registered with captive breeding programmes and only 2% of the world 's endangered species are part of these programmes. For every "good" zoo like London there are many, many more like Chessington were animals are kept in horrible little enclosures.

For places like Seaworld to survive thousands of dolphins and whales are slaughtered in places like Taiji - the pretty ones are taken for profit and the rest face a slow, painful, bloody death.

Gets off high horse worries about mistreatment of horses with clear genetic defects causing height issues

Poor Hully, criticises other people for not being able to read properly, but gets all rude about QueMierda's post which was simple a quote supporting the OP.

Hullygully · 16/05/2014 09:04

It isn't supporting the op (except in a general pro-animal sense).

The op isn't about videos of animal cruelty, it is the reverse. It is saying that videos of animals miraculousness should force the scales from our eyes and stop us being speciest.

However, I'd rather the point was addressed than me.

And yes, Harpy, quite.

People confuse dominion with domination and ignore the stewardship bit too, Back.

"However, I'd rather the point was addressed than me"

Quite.

Would the point be further addressed if you outlined your proposals to improve the situation, OP.

As I said in an earlier post I really am genuinely interested. Your op was (even by your own admission) a bit of a 'placard wave', and it would be interesting to now hear the depth of your ideas to tackle the problem.

SnakeyMcBadass · 16/05/2014 10:05

I like animals. Apart from wasps. The fuckers. And those new giant hornet bastards. Down with wasps and their ilk!
