Amazing animal videos on FB et al

So, you know how there are MILLIONS of animal videos of animals doing amazing things...cats breastfeeding ducklings, cats saving kids from dogs, whales thanking people for disentangling them from lines, lions, bears and tigers being friends etc etc etc

At what point do people stop saying THIS IS AMAZING about each and every video like it's a one-off, and acknowledge that animals are far more intelligent, compassionate, multi-faceted etc, they just can't speak human.

AND STOP TREATING THEM LIKE SHIT. Stop the speceism

''that que person up there"

Is that really necessary?

Hullygully · 15/05/2014 20:31

Ok, let's all talk about me and my rudeness and ignore the point.

So much easier than bothering to read something properly and actually engage with the issue.

Where did I say "Do not watch animal cruelty?"

I do appreciate it must be infuriating when a thread does not got exactly as you plan it to. Why such anger?

Ponkypink · 15/05/2014 20:36

Eh, wtf are you on about getting rid of zoos or similar if you claim to care about animals? How do you think rare species are protected before reintroduction to the wild when the population is large enough to survive ffs? Zoos and sealife centres are animal welfare resources (as well as educational resources if done properly), if you care about animals other than the fluffy, cute, high population ones, then you support them. I get the impression you have no idea about conservation biology, amazingly enough. So not actually that much better than people who post zomg cute animal videos on facebook (including friends of mine who have doctorates in biological subjects).

Hullygully · 15/05/2014 20:37

If you don't like pictures of animal cruelty being posted on social media, you need to help stop the cruelty, not the pictures.

There, that is what you posted.

Is it me? Am I the mad one?

Confused
QueMierda · 15/05/2014 20:42

Sorry for making you all shouty. Let me know what you want me to think/write and I will post accordingly.

MargotLovedTom · 15/05/2014 20:42

When you say 'far more intelligent' etc, do you mean far more than humans, or far more than they (animals) are assumed to be?

Hullygully · 15/05/2014 20:43

The latter, Margot

But it is unfortunate that rare species need the protection if zoos.

Zoos are much better than they used to be, although I avoid them like the plague, it is just tragic that they are needed.

"...At what point do people stop saying THIS IS AMAZING about each and every video like it's a one-off, and acknowledge that animals are far more intelligent, compassionate, multi-faceted etc, they just can't speak human..."

No idea Hully, but I wonder why so many people seem surprised to learn that we aren't the only thinking feeling species on the planet. We're only animals too, part of nature, not some special mystical beings. (Have I got the right end of the stick?)

LtEveDallas · 15/05/2014 21:16

"...At what point do people stop saying THIS IS AMAZING about each and every video like it's a one-off, and acknowledge that animals are far more intelligent, compassionate, multi-faceted etc, they just can't speak human..."

Well, when the animals we actually know and love stops doing really stupid things like rolling in fox shit, eating cow shit, eating rabbit shit, getting their front paws tied together in a loom band bracelet, running away from a bluebottle, skidding across the wet kitchen floor and getting their heads stuck in the cat flap and howling in the middle of the night because they have still not worked out in 4 years that if they go into room X they can't get back out again.

...and that was just this week.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 21:21

Nothing stupid about the first three.

The others are inflicted by man.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 21:22

Except the bluebottle. But they are well scary Grin

crispyporkbelly · 15/05/2014 21:24

crispyporkbelly · 15/05/2014 21:24

Lol at 'Ive never had such few responses on a thread'

I hate animal cruelty.

claraschu · 15/05/2014 21:35

People hate admitting how amazing and multifaceted all the billions of nameless unknown animals in the world really are. It is too threatening to people's meat habit, and to all the other ways we exploit animals.

If you want lots of responses to a thread, try starting one about how vegans are annoying; everyone is always excited to post about that.

grocklebox · 15/05/2014 22:02

people like looking at cute animals the fucking weirdos

they also like cluttering up aibu with chat threads. Who knows why people do anything?

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/05/2014 22:03

"CAN'T ANYONE READ?"

Could it be that you lack clarity in the written word, OP?

"Is it me? Am I the mad one?"

Who was it that said that if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem? Something like.

Whenever you stop ranting, I'd be interested in hearing your proposals to improve the situation, OP. Genuinely so.

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 22:09

Oh how times have changed.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 15/05/2014 22:14

That cat was ace, deakymom, and I'm now convinced cats are slightly cleverer than I previously thought they were.

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/05/2014 22:17

Good nickname ExitPursuedByABear.

Hullygully · 15/05/2014 22:18

Indeed Exit

Yes, Livid. Thank the dear sweet baby jesus there are some people left who can read.

OP posts:
ExitPursuedByABear · 15/05/2014 22:21

Why ADish?

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/05/2014 22:31

Not sure. I think I like quotations and am quite probably possibly rather old fashioned.
