about sunbeds

I probably am, because I just lost my DM to malignant melanoma. She likely got that because her own mother forced her as a child to wait out in the sun for her father to the point she was regularly blistered from sun burn.

But why on earth would anyone do this to themselves on purpose?

Why should people be allowed to make money from increasing people's chances of skin cancer?

My mum had skin cancer an never went on one in her life. Then she had cervical cancer. Beat those and now she has a brain tumour. Never smoked, never took drugs. It's heartbreaking.

goodasitgets · 14/05/2014 13:34

Maybe we should revert back to when being pale was the in thing.. I quite fancy a parasol Grin
I don't tan, I just burn. Never been on a sunbed as I have the type of skin that really shops shouldn't let me on with. My mum had skin cancer too

squoosh · 14/05/2014 13:38

Pale skin is definitely back in fashion. Red carpets are noticeable nowadays by their lack of St Tropez.

Not saying pale skin should revered above other skin shades but that people's natural skin tone is the best one for them.

MiniatureRailway · 14/05/2014 13:38

I love having a tan and sometimes use sun beds before a holiday. I feel the same way about smoking as you do about sunbeds though op. I like having a tan and don't see the point in smoking. We are contrary creatures.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 14/05/2014 13:42

I'm pale with dark hair and hazel eyes and freckles so it looks awful! But I'd rather not risk it. I used to go sunbeds all the time and even tanning injections but I've learned now.

Theodorous · 14/05/2014 15:32

I am seriously and dangerously allergic to fake tan. I don't use sunbeds now but did when I lived in the UK because otherwise 42 people told me a day that I looked tired. I was born looking like knackered shit and grew up with it. That's why. Luckily I discovered botox and eye bag surgery so now only 22 people say it a day. Sunbeds are fine but you have to be sensible, I used to do twice a week for a month then once a week for a bit and then leave off for a while. No wrinkles and no cancer.

Callani · 14/05/2014 16:23

YABU - I use sunbeds for 3 minutes twice a week before going on holiday to give myself a very light tan. That way my skin doesn't go from wrapped up to bright sunshine, watersports holiday overnight and is actually prepared for the blast meaning I can wear factor 30 and not burn rather than having to slather on that disgusting factor 50 stuff for the first week.

specialsubject · 14/05/2014 17:07

sorry, callani but all you are doing is increasing the wrinkles and cancer risk by this. The protection difference between factor 30 and factor 50 is very small, and anyway there are non-gloopy factor 50s around.

As you are doing watersports you need something that isn't greasy, but as you are doing watersports you are also getting a double dose of UV from the reflection. Hopefully you are covering up as much as possible too.

also are you locked indoors for the rest of the year?

fraidycat outside London the sky is actually blue. The UK is not solely London.

theodorous if people tell you that you look bad just for having wrinkles and pale skin, the answer is not to go and have dangerous treatments. The answer is a simple, two word statement regarding sex and travel.

sashh · 14/05/2014 17:14

Besides 3 minutes one every 1-2 +months is nothing. You will do more damage on a weeks holiday abroad.

It depends on whether you look after your skin, I have come back from Australia and Mauritius the same colour I went.

I know what you mean about the pale and people asking if you are unwell, but I think that is a problem with society that so many people use tanning products any of us with Celtic genes look abnormal.

People (more women than men atm) do, and have always done, things that are unhealthy to look 'good'.

Corsets worn all the time are not healthy, many cosmetics have (or had) things that are not good for your skin, soot and whale blubber sere used until the 1970s, possibly longer.

Freshstart2014 · 14/05/2014 17:38

As someone who had Melonaoma last year at the age of 29 , having never used a sunbed and am pale so will never tan so I have never tried to. It actually pisses me off more than anything that I got this and some people abuse sunbeds and they are fine. I now have a 4 inch scar on my upper on , visable to everyone and 3 monthly check ups. Angry

IceBeing · 14/05/2014 17:40

So sorry becah Thanks

I hope with everything in me that your treatment will be successful.

fresh so sorry to hear that too. I hope you will remain well.

I used to do 2 week holidays in Greece with my ginger hair and pale pale skin...I came back the same colour I went.

It isn't hard.

OP posts:
IceBeing · 14/05/2014 17:44

I have been burnt several times though...twice as a child and twice on my own watch.

I can't help wondering if one day I will end up paying for those mistakes just like my DM.

OP posts:
IceBeing · 14/05/2014 17:46

theo what is wrong with you? You think sunbeds are fine? Because you don't have cancer yet?

There is no safe level for UV exposure. Every 3 mins on a sunbed is increasing your risk.

OP posts:
Theodorous · 14/05/2014 18:00

I do lots of things you don't approve of, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with me, or you. Just that we are poles apart and will rarely share the same opinion. That's my last word, not getting into this again.

mswibble · 14/05/2014 18:01

I use sunbeds in the summer, primarily before our summer holiday. I dont use them for a tan, Ive never had as much of an inkling of any kind of tan. Im practically a smurf.
The reason I use them is because I have awful KP all over my thighs, back of my calves and arms. Its not a few little bumps - mine is awful big angry red bumps. The only thing that has ever helped reduce them and give me a smidgeon of confidence is the sun and sea. So rather than spend the first three days of my week long holiday waiting for the sea and sun to work its magic I use sunbeds and salt baths beforehand so I dont feel hideous in my holiday clobber.

limitedperiodonly · 14/05/2014 18:02

Do you want a medal?

I love beach holidays and use sun booths because in the summer I like to be tanned.

So shoot me. It would be quicker than dying from melanoma.

I wouldn't normally be as insensitive as that, but you have been grossly insensitive to the extent as saying that some people should pay for treatment because they've invited their conditions.

WTF?

I said that was misguided but understandable because of your distress at losing your mother. I lost my mother too. It hurts more than hell, doesn't it?

But you ignored that and continue to prate. That's not rational and it's not nice.

specialsubject · 14/05/2014 18:18

sunbeds without medical advice are Darwin award stuff.

best leave the users to it, I suppose - clearly no-one is going to listen!

And yeah I know that was a low blow. But that's what you're doing. You've wrote loads about issues with your Mum, now she's gone. But getting mad about sunbeds won't help.

I think you'll find I lack the warmth and the depth.

specialsubject. Do you want to list what you have and what you have not done wrong?

And if at the end of your life, you think you've been cheated do you want your money back from God?

Grow up and have some decency.

TequilaMockingbirdy · 14/05/2014 19:49

Cortana I thought your post was warranted :)
