about sunbeds

I probably am, because I just lost my DM to malignant melanoma. She likely got that because her own mother forced her as a child to wait out in the sun for her father to the point she was regularly blistered from sun burn.

But why on earth would anyone do this to themselves on purpose?

Why should people be allowed to make money from increasing people's chances of skin cancer?

colley thank you. That sounds like a horrible thing that happened to you. People are so unaccepting of difference...but I can't help but think that the general publics mad rush to look homogenous makes the situation so much worse.

If more people were happy to say 'this is what my, face/hair/skin/boobs/bum looks like and if you don't like it you can jog on' then I feel people with more extreme deviations from the norm would get an easier ride.

Like when parents tell their kids not to wear what they want to in case of bullying...it doesn't stop bullying to appease the bullies...it just transfers it someone who can't fit in for whatever reason. If we were all a bit more ready to stand up for our right to individuality people wouldn't be so shocked by difference.

Which is why I will continue to get shocked looks at the swimming pool for the crime of leg and armpit hair...coz this is what my adult female body looks like...and if you don't like it then jog on!

I think the thread started to take a different track (as a lot of threads often do in aibu) discussing appearance and skin and why people would want to alter it.

Psoriasis is probably a different issue when it comes to uvb/uva treatment but I guess when it comes to talking about appearance it's still a valid point - I was pre-teenaged when I diagnosed and whilst I didn't experience any problems at school, the general public were not so kind. There was a really awful incident when I went swimming once and as a result I didn't swim for 10 years after that.

But op I still feel for your loss

Montysma
And that's exactly the point I was making , psoriasis is a different issue , it still carries the risks though . I have yet to hear from any true psoriasis sufferer that it doesn't help in small measured doses - I do know too much can make it worse .
It's a side effect / improved living trade off . As with most medications .

cortana apparently you had a lot to say...tragically I didn't see any of it.

For the record I am indeed seeking professional help with the MH issue that cause me to binge eat...as I recommended to anyone who has the urge to risk their health on a sunbed.

My BMI Is currently healthy, thank you for your concern.

I havent read the whole thread but just to mention about the psoriasis thing. A month after my 3rd child was born I took rampant psoriasis over my whole body, horrendous, but the worse bit was the skin sloughing off my finger tips leaving them in raw flesh. Another month after that i became completely lame from knee pain and my legs welled up......psoriatic arthritis. After reading some forums, i decided to try sun beds even although they are the "wrong uv" for skin conditions. I can honestly say that it started to clear from the first session and was completely gone after 2 weeks. By the time i got my dermatology appointment there was nothing to see. I didnt dare tell him what i had done as doctors get so sniffy about sun beds and the perceived wisdom is that sun beds dont cut it. A year later in january following a crap summer, little patches re appeared elbows and knees. So i imediately hit the beds again. Pppffft......gone in 3 sessions. Once a year seems to be doing the trick. Certainly sunshine/uv does something for it ,in my case, miraculously so, and i would sooner live with an increased cancer risk than live with psoriasis.

Gee this is no longer about sun beds huh ?!?

Does any one have an opinion on using a sunbed weekly for 3 min or sun bathing daily ? Which would be worse ?

I have had NHS puva treatment for my psoriasis . 75% coverage of scaly loose skin .
Using steroids was a joke - a tube was lasting a few days .
To any psoriasis sufferers out there reading this thread in horror - it's a personal choice and medical reasons are quite different . It's a different discussion .

I cant actually go on a sunbed or expose myself to the sun without factor 50 because I have vitiligo and i have lost 95 percent of my natural skin pigmentation. I will never go brown but will burn and blister very very easily. I have a much higher chance of developing skin cancer.

i get so annoyed with my mother who uses them 2 or 3 times a week to look good for her much younger boyfriend as she know how dangerous they are but chooses to ignore the warnings. Her own father had skin cancer.

No, I'm really not at all sensitive so save your emoticons. But I am struggling to understand what point you are trying to make.

I don't agree with the OP's point. I think it's insensitive and I've told her that, but I understand that she is lashing out because of grief.

I don't understand your point at all. And as I said,if I've transgressed into a private feud, I'd rather bow out.

Maybe I'm being dense so if you want to explain it, go ahead. But TBH I can't be arsed.

I wrote it as I am well aware that what I said was out of line, however the OP is too.

I thought as much CortanaFights, and I agree, though I don't know the history.

But there was no need to have a go at me, was there?

Yes sunbeds can be/are dangerous depending on your viewpoint. I've been on weight loss threads with OP, no one called her stupid and asked why she was so dumb as to risk her health by overeating every time she spoke to her mother.

We all do things that are dangerous, whether it's smoking, drinking, eating unhealthily or choosing to cross a road. You weigh your risks and life your life.

Some people do feel better using sunbeds, I don't know why, but I don't then assume them to be devoid of sense.

I'm very sorry about your mother, and understand why you think that they're ridiculous, but YABU.

If you like getting a 'glow' then see a therapist to deal with your MH issues That was uncalled for. People go on sunbeds knowing the risks. They smoke, knowing the risks. They eat junk food, knowing the risks. They are no different.

I think you'll find I lack the warmth and the depth.

CortanaFights And I think you'll find that epithet is about as wanky as 'did you mean to be so rude?'

Try again.

sunbeds without medical advice are Darwin award stuff

specialsubject. Do you want to list what you have and what you have not done wrong?

And if at the end of your life, you think you've been cheated do you want your money back from God?

Grow up and have some decency.

And yeah I know that was a low blow. But that's what you're doing. You've wrote loads about issues with your Mum, now she's gone. But getting mad about sunbeds won't help.
