AIBU?

to feel scared for our girls when kicking prostitutes in a video game

gets you more points.

Did anyone see the program about women's roles in video games? I was utterly horrified when I saw the imagery of how women are portrayed as sexual objects and kicking female prostitutes to get your money back earned you points. I was also shocked that the teen girls interviewed said it was normal for them to be molested by boys.

AIBU to think that we should be campaigning against some of this stuff?

Should say or should be watching what their children are playing

Well I can say I have seen a lot of violent/sexual imagery.
(Movies, games, realife)

I have not once thought ' that man has just shot a guy! I'm into girls now!'

Neither have I thought ' OMG a sex scene on tv! I'm into girls now'

What kind of logic is that?

People do not become gay because of exposure to sexual or violent imagery. And I wouldn't imagine that most of the boys who play GTA are 'beasts'. Immature yes, but that is why they shouldn't be playing it.

The point is these girls are NOT gay. They are simply unable to cope with the sexuality on offer among their boy peers. They have shut down and only trust other women.

There have been age ratings on games since 2003, its just lame excuses why people are giving these games to their kids.

Would you buy Reservoir dogs for your kids.....

Do people not hear ( or rather see in this instance) the shit that comes out of their mouths?

'Violence creates lesbians' what utter bollocks.

If people became gay due to sexual imagery, wouldn't most women be lesbian? I mean, naked women are plastered everywhere. I'm still traumatised by one particular front page on the Sunday Sport, circa 1997, come to think of it.

gotnotimeforthat stop simplifying it. It's a very serious matter and not something to be mocked or laugh about. Truly this is traumatising our children and it's really not funny.

Unreal.

Okay so please explain to me how these have turned girls into lesbians if from your own admittance these girls are not gay!!

You know what lesbian means right?

Yes but jess, how many games even have a female protagonist! (I know you're being lighthearted!) :)

Tilly I do not think that cover tells you whether the game is violent or not, unless you understand the age rating system. I agree that some parents are feckless and don't care but I know far more who do care but don't realise. That to me is the problem. I think parents buying the game online are probably more able to judge the content - whatever you buy online there are reviews, there is a description which is (usually) more detailed than the blurb. If you are sufficiently able to work an online shop it's likely you can work google.

Also for example if you look at the cover for Saint's Row 3. It's a fairly plain cover, just containing a logo, and on some editions there was a sticker with a cartoon cat advertising extra DLC. Loads of kids were attracted to that cover in the shop I worked in and the parents didn't look at the age rating. Even parents who were refusing GTA because they'd heard bad press about it were happy to buy Saint's Row which is hardly better.

I don't know that it is the producers at fault, I think it's a separate issue. I do think some content of some games is extreme and shouldn't be there, for adults or not, but it's a separate issue that games aimed at adults are being so commonly accessed by children. We should be careful not to see the two issues as one because they are separate arguments (and always become linked on MN threads).

I think that if the current generation of teens can be openly gay or bi then that's positive.

Report
BertieBotts · 13/05/2014 15:57

And responding to clearly ridiculous arguments is just derailing the thread! Come on! Of course violence doesn't "make people gay", what utter tosh!

Nobody said they are lesbians, the point is they are going through a lesbian phase simply because they are terrified of what boys might do to them.

This has touched a nerve - girls refusing to have sex with boys is obviously something that's upsetting people out there.

Unreal.

I will laugh because you are being bloody ridiculous.

You cannot make a statement like that and expect people not to laugh.

Would it be a positive move if 18 games were on higher shelves? Pretty sure that's not the case at the moment.

Well that's really mature and intelligent of you.

  1. you said they was lesbians.
  2. how on earth would you know why they are going through this phrase anyway?
  3. since when did being a lesbian deter men? In fact it makes them more insistent.

Unreal, if you genuinely believe what you are saying then you are being ridiculous. The alternative is you don't and are just being goady?

I think so ender and I used to try and do that when it was my turn to arrange the shelves! Not possible in some shops though, in most there are shelf plans set by head office that they have to stick to.

Anyhow, I agree with pp, the answer is better education for parents so that they can make informed decisions about the kind of material they buy for their children. Although, of course their will always be lazy sods who can't be bothered, not quite sure we do about them.

I think that would help. Porn mags are on the top shelf for this exact reason. The games should be too.

Good idea.

It would be a positive move if parents took responsibility for their children, as it seems pretty clear that's not the case at the moment.

Either that or maybe Social Services need to be opening neglect cases, given there are so many parents out there incapable of protecting their children from harm and lesbianism.

It's all personal choice. We are gamers in my house (me and dh), dss has had COD since about 11 but he couldn't play the campaign, only the shoot em up, which is not very realistic. And no sound up, so couldn't here others.
Gta5, we got him last year at 15, he gets more aggressive at FIFA to be fair.
We know the content in the games and are happy for him to have them, it doesn't mean he disrespects women, he knows its a fantasy game, same as when he finally wins at FIFA it doesn't mean he's a top England manager and its going to be his future career.

Not only that but the shelving isles are often only head height anyway ( in tesco at least)

Have them on high shelves but still In view behind the counter maybe?
