gets you more points.

Did anyone see the program about women's roles in video games? I was utterly horrified when I saw the imagery of how women are portrayed as sexual objects and kicking female prostitutes to get your money back earned you points. I was also shocked that the teen girls interviewed said it was normal for them to be molested by boys.

AIBU to think that we should be campaigning against some of this stuff?

I played gta and hated it. ahah! I was more into sims, doom, resident evil, etc etc. I'm a survival horror girl and always will be. But the thing is, the amount of people I know who watch violent films and play violent games aren't violent people (like me. I love violent films and games, and I'm not affected) Personally I think there has to be something wrong anyway for video games to truly affect someone.

whatever the way they look, how they move, if you have to kill them, kill them.

it's what surival horror is about (and I'm not on about GTA or COD here. I'm on about PROPER games)
You have to survive. Ammo is limited, you may have to use a knife, you will get killed and health items and first aid kits are rare. The puzzles are hard. My mum and dad used to sit down and play these together, dad doing the shooting and mum doing the puzzles and me and my sister watching. Its why I love them so much now.

Hmm, play Silent Hill. Most of its monsters are human like, most aren't and you take pleasure in panicking and shooting/hitting something away that scares you. Those games made me cry because their stories were so breathtakingly beautiful and upsetting.
Then there's Resident Evil 2. Here's the main monster. He's just a guy who goes mental at his creation, the G-Virus, which the gonvernment want as it regenerates living cells (thus creating zombie humans, dogs, plants, mutated rabbits that like to wrap their tongues round your neck, and infected, well, anything, thats out to kill you and you have to kill them before that happens) This man (William Birkin) injects himself with this virus, leaving behind his wife (who was killed by the big talons on her husbands arm in the 3rd mutation) and his daughter who went on to work for the government. Then the virus gets out through Rats. Your character has to then battle through hoards of zombie monsters and watch pretty upsetting cutscenes. At the end, see that thing with a million teeth? you take pride in shooting that down off a wall with a rocketlauncher (which is unlimited if you beat the game twice!!) with 5 seconds to spare before the place blows up.
Doesn't sound that good, but when you sit and play this for 5 hours and complete it, you feel a little lost. then you play the other games and all is good with the world. No one gives games a chance. The Silent Hill & Resident Evil games are very upsetting and have beautiful storylines, yes its zombies, but families are broken apart, people go crazy, people tell their stories and you feel for them.
Silent Hill 2, he thinks his wife died three years ago, instead he killed her because she was so poorly he went crazy. All the monsters are figments of his imagination, all of them are very sexualised and symbolic of his repressed sexuality. When he, and you, the player, find out, you really do feel shit about it. It's hinted at in the game but you feel shit.
then you have to kill her "memory"
it will sound shit to people who haven't played it, but these stories will stick with me and other players for a long time and they're stories we love.

No, most games tell a story, they aren't just shooting galleries, though some are.

Crayola Would the game(s) be just as enjoyable if the representations were completely abstract instead of human or humanlike?

Posted too soon, It's not real, and normal people it doesn't affect them. me and my partner watch porn and it doesn't affect us at all. We would NEVER go out and attack people and we've been playing violent games because his family, and mine, are gamers and we played them whether they liked it or not! My dad said he would have never let me play GTA, but he let me shoot the heads off zombies and I've loved it ever since. Reminds me of when I was a child.
I also play pacman, but do I run around in a dark room eating little pills to repetitive music?
no
It doesn't affect normal people.

While I agree some games are overly violent it bugs me seeing people who have no knowledge of games complaining about them and instead basing their arguments on what they have heard from people who also don't play games

Agreed

I was shocked though at some of the young peoples language on xbox live that put me off that system. I didn't seem to encounter the same thing on playstation network.

You can't ban games. the age restriction is clear its stupid parents who give their kids access to this stuff that need banning.
Alcohol and porn damage kids we don't ban them we age restrict them and expect parents to protect their own kids its the same with the games. sadly some people are too lazy or stupid to do that job properly

I play resident evil, silent hill, call of duty, final fantasy, kingdom hearts, alone in the dark, and, GTA. I'm female. Honestly, it's just a part of the game, it's meant to be contraversial. Some of the things on that game you turn your head and look at the screen in awe or disgust, some people will laugh, others won't. My boyfriend & his mates love gta but they spend most of their time on missions killing each other or flying planes or blowing up buildings for fun. I've managed to play and NEVER gone to a strip club or kicked a prostitute to get my money back. seen it happen obviously. If you want a health boosy you buy a corn dog and get on with it. I've played MMORPGs since I was six, silent hill & resident evil since before I can remember, along with Pokémon, Tarzan Freeride, Donald Duck & buzz lightyear. I was still quite young when the gamecube & Dreamcast came out, and I've never, ever once kicked a prostitute. I've watched A Serbian Film (to my own disgust), Saw movies, other gory films, and they have no affected me in any way shape or form. I've just asked our delivery boy at work if its affected him and he was like "no it's just to get your money and a health boost"
so there

Depending on how mature my ds's turn out to be, I would let them play GTA at 15/16, only after I've tried it out and think it's ok. If they turn out to be aggressive little gits who can't handle losing then no to that, FIFA or COD, if they're delicate snowflakes, no silent hill.
If they're obsessive about games no Football Manager or MMORPG's!

18+ rated films are nicer than 18+ games? Really?

Two words: Human Centipede.

Report
JCDenton · 14/05/2014 11:16

That is a very tough question! I don't know how mature they will be for their age when they get to the point of asking for 18 rated games. Some of the stories of 8 and 10 year olds playing the game are insanity to me but I think somewhere between the ages of 14 and 16. We'll see. Maybe nobody will care about GTA by then and it will be some other game grabbing all the headlines.

JCDenton what age would you let your kids play GTA?

JCDenton · 14/05/2014 10:34

Enderwoman Yes. None of the characters in that DLC were 'good guys' but he was probably the most sympathetic of the lot.

Report
JCDenton · 14/05/2014 10:29

I've seen films with much more graphic and bleak content than GTA and know of others that exist that are even worse. I don't buy that the content of games is worse than film.

Wasn't there a GTA game called something like The Ballad of Gay Tony where you work for a boss called Gay Tony?
