ENTITLED

I do not get this insult at all. It makes no sense ' 'soo entitled' ' how very entitled you are'
Just the words 'very entitled' do not roll of the tongue like a good insult should and by definition of the word it makes little to no sense

Am I missing something key here? Or this just a MN trend?

This is not an AIBU I posted here because this is where I see the word entitled being thrown around the most.

Unless it's a Christening BBQ. If you expect a drink there you're a raging alky

so in short we are probably wrong no matter what we do.

To my mind, a Christening is like a funeral. If you're not blind drunk by noon, you're doing it wrong.

"To my mind, a Christening is like a funeral. If you're not blind drunk by noon, you're doing it wrong."

i might just have to start applying that rule to all family get togethers

I like the word, though I don't think I have ever used it myself. I feel it is rightly used in situations where people expect their parents to give them everything they want and more and come on here to moan because that isn't happening. It went through my head today when my daughter started picking a fight with me.

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 17:23

mexican i understand what you mean but by definition using the word entitled in this way is just a contradiction.

"I feel it is rightly used in situations where people expect their parents to give them everything they want and more and come on here to moan because that isn't happening"

you are using it to mean the exact opposite of what it actually means. to say someone is entitled actually means that you think they have the right to do whatever it is they are doing.

eg i am ENTITLED to an opinion. which means i am allowed one. But to use the word as Mnetters do it would mean im not allowed one.

Im not wording this very well but do you see what i mean?

YANBU.

Anything that would be perfectly innocuous in other contexts can be considered "entitled" on Mumsnet, such as hoping someone will give you a seat on the train if you're eight months pregnant, or asking for half a day off work to see your kid's nativity play.

RachelWatts · 09/05/2014 17:48

This thread explains why I found quite a lot of threads so confusing.

Boomerwang · 09/05/2014 19:50

wonderful examples, hackmum

As I am working class, unemployed and not on benefits I don't consider myself to be entitled to anything, therefore the accusation hasn't been levelled at myself to my knowledge.

Yet :)

Love the MN phrase 'a bit goady' or even better, 'goady fucker'.

And if all those B&Gs don't write out their heartfelt handwrittten thank you cards the second the wedding is over, they better prepare to be forever outcast from naice social circles. I mean, that's what present givers are entitled to.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 09/05/2014 20:16

"unhinged" Is a great term.

"entitled" when referring to a misplaced sense of entitlementand overinflated sense of self importance irritates me tbh.
Like the way "random" is so often used in reference to something being obscure or unlikely or uncommon or perculiar. Angry

TheRealAmandaClarke · 09/05/2014 20:17

Peculiar

EurotrashGirl · 09/05/2014 20:19

Everyone here is dramatic. Mole hills become mountains and squabbles become divorce worthy.

I would place money on the fact that all the high strung people on here wouldn't dream of doing more than smiling and nodding, let alone saying half this to anyone's face. Either that Britain is full of a bunch of high strung loons :)

Take it all with a grain of salt.

EurotrashGirl · 09/05/2014 21:59

I dunno Princess the more time I spend on here the more convinced I become that Britain is full of a bunch of high strung loons. but I guess I shouldn't let one website change my perception of an entire nation.

Good grief you lot. Read yourselves back, why don't you?

You are all so, like projecting

Though that has died off a bit recently. Good job too as it was never used properly!

SunshineOutdoors · 09/05/2014 22:23

Does 'grabby' make you 'stabby'?

A lot of things used to happen on mn that made people's teeth itch, not heard that one in a while.

Or . Think that got replaced by 'That is all'.

Can these mn phrases and words be traced back to when they were first used? Which posters 'invented' them?

JonesRipley · 09/05/2014 22:27

I hate it too

I also dislike "over-thinking" (it normally means the person is being accused of thinking)

also "get a grip" and variants of that

limitedperiodonly · 10/05/2014 00:58

hoping someone will give you a seat on the train if you're eight months pregnant

You're pregnant, you're not ill

gotnotimeforthat · 10/05/2014 01:16

limited yeah but to be fair the two often go hand in hand.

I hate when women use pregnancy for petty things but seating on transport I think is perfectly reasonable. I struggle to stay upright now wearing trainers if I'm standing on a packed bus. So I can only imagine how unsteady I would of Been whilst pregnant.

You chose to get pregnant. It's your own fault.

Also, when I was done giving birth, I cleaned the house, built a shopping mall, and saved the day 5 minutes later. Oh and it was after an emergency C-sec. What's your excuse?
