ENTITLED

I do not get this insult at all. It makes no sense ' 'soo entitled' ' how very entitled you are'
Just the words 'very entitled' do not roll of the tongue like a good insult should and by definition of the word it makes little to no sense

Am I missing something key here? Or this just a MN trend?

This is not an AIBU I posted here because this is where I see the word entitled being thrown around the most.

I don't see "smug" used around here that much these days - it is part of the same MN club as entitled and unhinged - top of the MN accusation list.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 09/05/2014 13:30

got I tend to use it exclusively to describe my in laws, who feel entitled to a grandparent relationship facilitated by me despite being truly appalling parents to my dh.

Though that would explain some of the funny looks I get when I'm on a PIL rant Grin

ah, you've made two mistakes there pointythings - 1) you've wanted money spent on something for you (although you could position that as "a camera for taking photos of the DCs to send to grandparents", much more acceptable) and 2) you asked your DH for it, is not all money pooled "family money"? Wink

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 13:37

officer yes having a pushchair is greedy. you should carry your baby in a sling so you have both hands free to give to the poor.

OP posts:
tethersend · 09/05/2014 13:38

I remember your bag thread, Mary... Did you get one in the end?

Wanting any kind of a present is Frowned Upon, but if you expect a Mothers' Day gift OH THE HUMANITY.

tethersend · 09/05/2014 13:39

There is no MN problem which can't be solved with a sling.

JeanSeberg · 09/05/2014 13:42

OP - starting your own thread is a typical example of entitled, greedy, grabby, unhinged behaviour.

Are you on glue?

MaryWestmacott · 09/05/2014 13:46

tethers - yes, I got a Mulberry Bayswater in the end, figured I needed something classic looking that wasn't too "Mrs. Thatcher".

Slings solve anything. Apparently.

Aspiringhuman · 09/05/2014 13:49

I find it a very hurtful insult. To me the poster us saying that you're selfish, unreasonable and don't deserve what you want or do deserve whatever bad thing is being discussed. I was called entitled for wanting to be able to afford a roof over my head. Made me feel incredibly guilty.

RonSwansonsLushMoustache · 09/05/2014 13:50

I had never seen it before MN but this week I heard it used in this context on a US show. Can't remember which now, maybe The Good Wife?

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 13:56

jean

shit you caught me! i shall put the PVA down now...

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 14:03

aspiring I don't know much anything about your situation but im pretty confident in saying that you have no real reason to feel guilty.

don't let people get to you.

pointythings · 09/05/2014 14:04

Oh, Mary... Yes, I am doing everything wrong. Although we are married and both work, DH and I (gasp) don't have a joint bank account.

And it is of course utterly entitled of me to think that it would be unfestive to buy my own birthday present out of my own money. Not to mention it being a first world problem and me being all smug about my shiny new gadget.

I've also (regasp) bought a birthday present for DH recently.

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 14:35

pointythings HOW VERY DARE YOU! a present?? why on eath did you feel this was acceptable behaiour? Shock

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 14:43

i suggest you return that present and exchange it for a new sling asap!

nail glue is better to sniff than prott stick

Do I have to carry my DDs in a sling? They're 11 and 13! I shall need woo therapy for my back!

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 14:56

okay maybe not a sling... but you could have purchased some art for the house! you and mary are just as bad as each other ;)

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 09/05/2014 15:09

yes having a pushchair is greedy. you should carry your baby in a sling so you have both hands free to give to the poor.

That made me LOL.

Under no circumstances may you expect anyone to buy you a wedding present.

Oh god yes. Until I went on Mumsnet I happily arranged childcare for any uninvited DC, bought wedding gifts that the bride & groom wanted and Shock even chipped in something for the budget or paid for food & drinks where the B&G couldn't afford to fund a big wedding reception.

What was I thinking in 'enabling' them in their massive sense of 'entitlement' to want a wedding day appropriate to them, their wishes and their budget rather than the esoteric etiquette demanded of them by a bunch of internet strangers?

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 15:21

I detect hypocrosy tondelayo

buying someone a wedding gift is completely unacceptable but if you dare to turn up to a BBQ without booze/food you are the most disgraceful person to walk the earth.

OP posts:
pointythings · 09/05/2014 15:27

gotnotimeforthat we have lots of art in the house. Some of it is really ethnic (think South Korean mask, looks permanently pissed off especially when we drape tinsel over it at Christmas) and some of it is really original (as in: created by DDs).

I should have gone for some curly wrought-iron benches for the garden and some Cath Kidston tea towels, shouldn't I?

gotnotimeforthat · 09/05/2014 15:36

pointythings

you should have.

was going to make a joke about cath kidston but im unsure wether people actually like her stuff or not

I don't think the poor would want my hands. They have age spots from relentless sunbathing - another MN sin.

limitedperiodonly · 09/05/2014 15:43

Unless it's a Christening BBQ. If you expect a drink there you're a raging alky.
