to think Carrie was a right bitch in Four Weddings and a Funeral?

Fair enough that she shagged Charles after the first wedding. The "are we engaged now?" joke wasn't funny, but still.
To then shag Charles at the second wedding while only just engaged to Scottish bloke was poor.
Inviting Charles to her wedding post-shag was iffy.
To then take Charles wedding-dress shopping and tell him about previous shags was shit of her. Plus she had a really expensive wedding-gift list and we all know how entitled that is.
To then have the audacity to attend his wedding when he's told her he loved her, AND to tell him moments before the ceremony that she'd left Scottish bloke - that was just cow-like behaviour.

Her only redeeming feature is that she had good taste in hats. I'm right, aren't I?

I really like the movie as I have a thing for HG but AM really did ruin the movie with her diabolical acting.

That 'is it raining' line is so cringe. I can't stand it!

Hassled · 09/05/2014 14:05

Shelagh - I can imagine that must be a right turn on :o

I haven't seen Salmon Fishing - must add it to my list. KST was amazing in the English Patient - I've never really understood why she isn't a bigger name.

She doesn't do many Hollywood films, she sticks to French cinema.

HesterShaw · 09/05/2014 14:21

AD can't help the shitty lines she was given though. But yes the character Carries was unlikeable and you wonder what Charles was doing.

Otherwise the performances were absolutely perfect. If it's possible to love a film like a family member, it's Four Weddings for me Grin.

Favourite character is Tom. Oh God, so many great Tom quotes.
"What do you think Fifi? Spot a potential hubby in the throng?
"Bugger off Tom."

"When Bernard told me he was going to marry Lydia, I congratulated him because all his other girlfriends have been such complete dogs! And how lucky we are to see so many of them here today. I'm particularly delighted to see Camilla, who was the first person Bernard asked to marry him. If I remember, she told him to bugger off. And lucky for Lydia that she did!"

Perfection. It's a "curl up on the sofa with some white wine and sister" film.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 09/05/2014 14:25

I love it too. I have seen in many times. John Hannah in the funeral scene makes me weep every time.

Levantine · 09/05/2014 14:26

Oh I loved KST in that film. I must have had an inkling that I too would be doomed to years of going to weddings on my own.

BeetlebumShesAGun · 09/05/2014 14:27

My step brother is getting married at the end of the month. The bride is Scottish so it is going to be in Scotland with a
ceilidh and kilts and what not.

Mum and I have been practising "It's Brigadoon! It's bloody Brigadoon!" Grin

CadleCrap · 09/05/2014 14:32

AD can't help the shitty lines she was given though

Try saying the line yourself imagining you are getting paid thousands to say it.
I guarantee you will be able to say it more convincingly.

Fuck, I'm sitting in my PJs in the glorious sunshine and I can say it better and 1) I am not an actress
2) not getting paid

It is not the line - it is the shockingly poor "acting" of AD

IsChippyMintonExDirectory · 09/05/2014 14:41

I've always wanted to know (not see the film in ages) what does Scarlett drop when she's running to the wedding?
Love the montage at the end especially when KST marries prince Charles!

squoosh · 09/05/2014 14:42

She drops her wig!

squoosh · 09/05/2014 14:42

I think.

Clawdy · 09/05/2014 14:43

Can't see him happily married to KST somehow. But agree AD was not right for that part. She's meant to be a lovely free spirit but it doesn't really work. When Simon Callow says "Love that girl..." it doesn't ring true. Not sure who would have been better....

SconeRhymesWithGone · 09/05/2014 14:46

One thing about the Scottish wedding:it was night time and in the middle of summer (I think) but it was dark. That seemed a false note, in addition to a woman from the US South (Carrie had a trace of Southern accent) wearing white to a wedding.

MarshaBrady · 09/05/2014 14:48

KST made that film. I wasn't keen on Carrie.

Montegomongoose · 09/05/2014 14:55

'Speeches. Excellent.'

Family shorthand for leaving any cringy situation.

HesterShaw · 09/05/2014 15:01

No no! She drops the bow she's supposed to wear at the back of the dress. That's why she follows the bride down the aisle with her baggy blue granny pants on display.

HesterShaw · 09/05/2014 15:03

And HG is absolutely perfect as well. I can forgive him anything because of that one film. Whenever we have to be polite and do something we don't want to do, DSis and I say "No. That would be lovely," through gritted teeth. And any kind of drinking session is "Let's see if we can push on through til dawn." So funny. Well, we think we are...

Hassled · 09/05/2014 15:07

I have done the "you must be so proud" thing to bride's parents at weddings :o.

John Hannah - he's amazing in the funeral scene, but the rest of the time just seems a bit awkward and unconvincing to me. Everyone else is throwing themselves into their parts and he's just a bit clumsy with it.

OP posts:
squoosh · 09/05/2014 15:08

Ah yes, I forgot about the blue knickers!

squoosh · 09/05/2014 15:08

I find John Hannah a little bit creepy, I think it's because he has such a distractingly tiny head.

HesterShaw · 09/05/2014 15:10

Oh yes, the hearty handshake and the "You must be VERY proud!" I love doing this.

I do realise what a monumental sad act I am, by the way.

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 09/05/2014 15:14

Reading this has made me want to watch it - but it's not on lovefilm or blinkbox! At least not that I can find. Is it on netflix? I love this so much and could do with a comfort film tonight!

Apparently the actress that played Scarlett died of an asthma attack, sadly.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 09/05/2014 15:14

Although, I have to say, I don't get the "so proud" thing. So proud of what, exactly?

FreeButtonBee · 09/05/2014 15:15

Agree that AMD is not a great actress but was once on a transatlantic flight and she was the soul of understated non-starriness while walking to the gate and waiting to board so I've always had a soft spot for her since.

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 09/05/2014 15:16

Oh and to address the OP, NYANBUAA!! Never got how KST got overlooked.
